DarongShan National Forest Park, around 23 km from Yulin downtown, is a stunning landscape with mountains, forest, reservoir, waterfall and windmills. As it's such a big forest park with hundreds of mountains, and the main attractions are far away from each other, it's highly recommended to visit by car 🚘rather than public transportation. If you go there in National Day, prepare yourself with enough food and drinks because of traffic jam😆 There is an abandoned reservoir 🏞with clean water and surrounded by green forest. Nice view of the overall reservoir. While some people go there for swimming and BBQ. Besides that, DarongShan National Forest Park is also famous for its vast grasslands, where you can enjoy camping🏕and paddling in the biggest grassland with a lake nearby. I was lucky to find out the Lianhua Waterfall(莲花瀑布) after one hour hike and steep descent in the hidden forest. It’s best to stay overnight in the village. After 5 PM, when tourists leave, the ancient village reveals its true face. From Chaji to Longchuan in Jixi is about a 2-hour drive. The stone drum at the entrance feels cool and smooth to the touch. 2️⃣ Xining | Qinghai Ta’er Monastery and Dongguan Mosque are 20 kilometers apart but have completely different vibes. Start at the butter sculpture hall, where you can still see the artisan’s fingerprints on the peony petals. The prayer wheels in the courtyard are hot from the sun. Following a group of monks in red robes around, the sound of bells clears your mind. 🍜 After descending, head to “Mojia Street” in the east city district for a bowl of lamb offal soup. The broth is rich and creamy like milk—remember to add plenty of chili. Visit Dongguan Mosque only on Friday “Jumu’ah” prayers. Standing beneath it, you feel a strong sense of pressure. ⏰ Before 10 AM, the light on the Buddha’s face is soft, revealing the facial features clearly. Don’t just stay on the main path. Head west toward Xiangguo Temple and climb the stairs. Some murals in the caves are still being restored, showing the artist’s pencil outlines. ⚠️ After 4 PM, the light is blocked by the mountain opposite, casting the Buddha in shadow. Here are 8 personally tested hidden gems that aren’t crowded—perfect for taking kids. 1️⃣ Yulin | Guangxi While others flock to Guilin in summer, I prefer taking kids to Dazong Mountain in Yulin. Driving up from the base, the temperature drops all the way to 25 degrees. 📍 In Dazong Mountain National Forest Park, the most recommended spot is the Lotus Waterfall section. The whole route is shaded and flat, perfect for strollers. ⏰ Enter the mountain after 3 PM. The sunlight slants through the cedar forest, casting golden fragments on the ground. Bring a water gun. The creek is ankle-deep, and kids can play crouched down for half an hour. On the mountain’s alpine meadow, spread a picnic blanket and the breeze will make you not want to leave. ⚠️ Bring your own snacks. Food options inside the park are limited. 2️⃣ Taiyuan | Shanxi Taking kids to see historical sites can be boring for them.
