Bakio travel guide and discussion

Bilbao effortlessly blends gritty industrial heritage with breathtaking modern design, making it one of the most captivating cities in northern Spain. Start your journey wandering through Casco Viejo, the vibrant old town filled with narrow medieval streets, colorful balconies, and historic plazas like Plaza Nueva. Beyond the iconic shiny titanium curves of the Guggenheim Museum, make sure to seek out unique local architecture like the glass-paneled Basque Health Department building or cross the historic Vizcaya Bridge just down the river. For unbeatable views over the entire valley, ride the Artxanda Funicular up the mountain at sunset, or take a day trip along the dramatic coast to climb the winding stone staircase of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Experiencing Bilbao like a local means diving headfirst into Basque food culture, which revolves around pintxos rather than standard sit-down dinners. Head to bustling spots like Mercado de la Ribera or casual taverns in the old quarter, order a glass of crisp local Txakoli wine or dry Basque cider, and pick out fresh bite-sized creations topped with everything from cured ham to wild mushrooms. A great insider tip for foodies is to embrace the local tradition of txikiteo, which is essentially hopping from one bar to another, having just one drink and one pintxo at each stop. It keeps your evening social, active, and endlessly delicious. Traveling through Basque Country does not have to break the bank if you plan smart. Grab a rechargeable Barik card as soon as you arrive, which significantly discounts your fares on the metro, buses, trams, and even public elevators. Food budgets go surprisingly far when you stick to pintxo crawls instead of upscale restaurants, or when you opt for a generous menú del día during weekday lunches, which often includes three full courses, bread, and wine for a fraction of the dinner price. Skip expensive tour buses, pack comfortable walking shoes to explore the riverside promenades on foot, and enjoy the rich culture, stunning scenery, and warm hospitality that make Bilbao completely unforgettable. #TravelSpain #BilbaoVibes #BasqueCountry #ExploreSpain #PintxosTime #Wanderlust

A journey along the rugged Basque coast reveals a true natural wonder: the protected marine reserve of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The name beautifully translates from Euskara as 'castle rock', perfectly describing the dramatic, cinematic landscape rising straight from the crashing waters of the Bay of Biscay. The sheer visual impact of the relentless ocean waves meeting the sheer coastal cliffs leaves an unforgettable impression. ⛪ The Stairway to the Chapel The absolute highlight of the reserve is a small 10th-century chapel perched atop the rocky island, historically dedicated to John the Baptist. Reaching the summit requires conquering a winding, man-made stone staircase consisting of exactly 241 steps. Local mythology claims the saint reached the island in just three strides while actively chasing the devil, leaving eternal footprints firmly pressed into the stone path. Today, centuries-old tradition dictates ringing the chapel bell three times upon arrival to ensure a special wish comes true. 🐉 Dragonstone Brought to Life The moody, sweeping panoramas and atmospheric coastal fog made the location a perfect filming spot for Dragonstone in the global hit series Game of Thrones. While digital effects added a massive, gloomy fortress for the screen, real-life sunlit views of the emerald waters, natural stone arches, and rugged cliffs are infinitely more spectacular and vibrantly colorful. 🥾 Logistics and Hiking Tips Exploring the island requires careful planning and significant physical effort. The steep, two-kilometer round-trip hike demands comfortable walking shoes, a spare shirt, and plenty of drinking water to handle the steep elevation changes. Access during high tourist seasons, weekends, or public holidays requires a mandatory online reservation via the official government website. Arriving early in the morning secures free roadside parking before large tour buses descend upon the area. Alternatively, public transport routes running from Bilbao via Bakio or Bermeo offer excellent, stress-free options for reaching the trailhead. #hiddengems #hiddengemseurope #travel2026 #travel #couplestrip #naturalwonders #thingstodo #myitinerary #citydaytours #spain #spaintravel #basquecountry #西班牙

There are probably few people like me who haven’t watched Game of Thrones, and even fewer who haven’t watched it but still go to Gaztelugatxe No ticket is required to enter the island itself, but a reservation is needed. Since I hadn’t planned to go before, I checked the official website on a whim and found no available slots. However, the guide said you can enter without a reservation after 7:00 PM, so I decided to try my luck I arrived at 7:30 PM. The parking lot is very large, so you can imagine how many visitors there must be during the day. The signs are very clear. Not far from the parking lot, you can see the gate in photo 2. Just go straight in. There are signs inside. One path leads to the viewing platform for a panoramic view, photo 4, and the other leads to the island. The path itself is easy to walk. My four-year-old daughter walked the entire way by herself, but some parts have loose gravel, so it’s best to wear sneakers. Flip-flops or similar shoes won’t work and will definitely be slippery Putting Game of Thrones aside, the island itself is very beautiful and unique. Climbing the winding, dragon-like path to the mountaintop chapel, combined with the ever-changing weather, the strong wind that almost blew me away, and the occasional lightning over the sea, was amazing! If the weather is clear, I’m sure it will be a different kind of beauty! When we left after 9:00 PM, there were still people going in. It’s still light outside at 10:00 PM, but I don’t recommend going too late since there seems to be no lighting inside. Safety first! Address: Parking Gaztelugatxe - Eneperi

Arriving in Bakio, I was immediately struck by the contrast between the lush, emerald hills and the powerful Atlantic swells. This is the heart of Basque surf culture, where the rhythm of the day is dictated by the tides. I spent my morning watching surfers carve through the waves on the long, sandy expanse of Bakio Beach, before retreating to a local taberna for a glass of crisp, sparkling Txakoli wine—produced in the very vineyards overlooking the bay. The vibe here is laid-back and authentic, a perfect coastal sanctuary just a stone's throw from the dramatic cliffs of Gaztelugatxe. It’s Basque coastal living at its finest #spain #travel2026 #thingstodo #naturalwonders

Crossing the narrow stone bridge to Gaztelugatxe felt like walking straight into a fantasy epic. This tiny islet on the Biscay coast is a masterpiece of nature and human persistence. I tackled the 241 winding stone steps, the salty Atlantic spray hitting my face with every turn. Reaching the ancient hermitage at the summit, I rang the bell three times for luck, just as tradition dictates. The views of the rugged, wave-battered Basque cliffs are hauntingly beautiful. It’s a raw, cinematic landscape that makes you feel small in the best possible way—a true highlight of the Basque Country #travel2026 #thingstodo #spain #naturalwonders

Start early to beat the fog, especially on the coast. Summer mornings here are crisp, but clouds roll in by mid-afternoon. Bring water and sturdy shoes—the paths can be steep but the scenic payoff is insane! Getting Around: Local buses connect Bermeo and Bakio (Bizkaibus); it’s cheap and you’ll dodge parking drama. Walking parts of the coastline is highly recommended for those “straight road, green fields, mountain” feels. Where to Eat: Snack on pintxos (Basque tapas) at Bermeo’s old town bars—try octopus or anchovies for the real deal. Beach cafés in Bakio make great pit stops for coffee or a fresh bocadillo. Extra Tips: No visas for EU passports, carry cash for small purchases, and always check the weather (bring a light jacket, mountain fog hits quick). #BasqueSummer #Gaztelugatxe #TravelSpain #BeachVibes #Tripdotcom
