After a few days in Kunming, we took the high-speed train to Lijiang—an easy journey of about 3–3.5 hours. We stayed for three days, and it quickly became one of our favorite places in Yunnan. Day 1 – Lijiang Old Town Lijiang is one of those cities where it's best to simply wander. Stone streets, crystal-clear canals, arched bridges, wooden houses covered in flowers, and the constant sound of running water create an incredibly peaceful atmosphere. We visited Mu's Residence (Mu Palace), which became one of our favorite spots in the city. The palace itself is beautiful, but the best part is climbing to the top for panoramic views over Lijiang's rooftops with the mountains in the distance. We were lucky to visit in mid-April, when spring was at its peak. Trees were blooming everywhere, the weather was warm without being too hot, and the whole city was filled with color. The sun in Yunnan is surprisingly strong, though, so sunscreen and a hat are definitely worth bringing. Lijiang is also famous for its traditional indigo tie-dye textiles. Everywhere we looked, deep blue fabrics were hanging out to dry, while shops displayed clothing, scarves, bags, and home décor made from the same handcrafted material. Later we stopped in Shuhe Ancient Town. While its center felt similar to Lijiang, we enjoyed the quieter atmosphere, the stream running through town, and the many traditional costume photo studios that made parts of Shuhe look like a film set. Day 3 – Tiger Leaping Gorge On our last morning, we headed to the bus station and traveled independently to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Many people book organized tours, but we chose public transport instead. Finding the correct bus and figuring out where to get off took some patience, but we made it—and it was one of the best decisions of the trip. If you're planning a trip through Yunnan, I'd recommend giving Lijiang at least three full days. Between the old town, nearby villages, mountain scenery, and local culture, there's far more to experience than a quick overnight stop.

Our favorite dog, Domi, was the one we loved most (I had a Saint Bernard during university, so he felt a special connection to the Bernese Mountains). It's been a while, so picking up from the last post, I'm sharing some spots and tips from my trip to Lijiang, Yunnan, at the end of November. The following reflects my personal opinion only~ ✈️ Travel: First, this trip was scheduled for 4 days and 4 nights. Due to time constraints, I only chose Dali and Lijiang. My route was to go to Dali first, then Lijiang. I spent 1.5 days in Dali and 2 days in Lijiang, and the rest was mostly travel time... 🌤️ Weather: Checking the weather a month in advance for Lijiang isn't very accurate; it might only be accurate closer to the date. If you're planning to see the golden sunrise on the peaks, you must choose a clear day! Even though it was sunny on the day I went, it had been snowing and cloudy for the previous few days, so there was a lot of fog that morning and no golden sunrise on the peaks. 👚 Clothing: I went at the end of November. Lijiang is colder than Dali, and you need to wear a down jacket even during the day. ⛰️ Altitude: It depends a lot on your personal constitution. I didn't have altitude sickness in Dali or Lijiang; I only felt a bit short of breath when climbing stairs on the snow mountain. However, my husband started having altitude sickness at the Lijiang high-speed railway station. If you're planning to go up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, be sure to prepare oxygen bottles in advance. You can just buy regular ones at a pharmacy; there's no difference in breathing them. 🏠 Accommodation: In Lijiang, most people stay in one of the three major ancient towns. Because our itinerary involved going to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the morning, we chose Baisha Ancient Town, which is closest to the snow mountain. Baisha Ancient Town feels like it's expanding rapidly; there are homestays under construction all along the way, and you might hear sand trucks passing by at night. Lijiang Old Town has a better environment, but you do have to walk on stone paths and do a lot of walking. 🚗 It's easier to hail a ride in Lijiang than in Dali. You can get a car anytime on Didi. Even at 5:00 AM in Baisha, we were able to get a ride quickly. You don't actually need to take the public bus as suggested in some guides. When returning from the snow mountain, I saw many people queuing for the bus, but it's actually very convenient to hail a ride after you come out. 🌺 I only visited Baisha and Lijiang Old Town. In Baisha, you can see the snow mountain if the weather is good. Baisha also has some popular photo spots. I went to Jianshan Courtyard, but it wasn't as nice as the pictures online, and the drinks and cakes weren't very good either. There are few places to take photos, and it's very weather-dependent. I highly recommend Lijiang Old Town; the environment is truly beautiful, and there are bonfire parties in the evening, but it's also really crowded. If you go to Lijiang Old Town, I highly recommend Zhazha Rice Noodles; the portions are large and they are delicious. The grilled milk fan tastes like cheese; it wasn't that great. 🏔️ Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: You need to grab cable car tickets in advance, and you need to pay an entry fee to enter the mountain (local drivers don't need to). There are many places to see the golden sunrise on the peaks. I chose Ganhaizi, where the reflection in the lake is quite beautiful. After seeing the golden sunrise on the peaks, you can head to the visitor center to prepare for the cable car. You can choose to take the cable car to Spruce Meadow first, and then go to Blue Moon Valley in the afternoon when the light is softer; it will look better for photos.

I've dug up a rice noodle shop with a massive contrast: Baisha Po Dian (Baisha Broken Shop) · Roasted Meat Rice Noodles. Located near the South Gate, it's no exaggeration to say it's the most "dilapidated" looking shop in Baisha. Tucked away in a century-old Naxi house in an old alley, it has no fancy decor—just simple wooden beams and earthen walls. It's quiet and relaxed, allowing you to enjoy the slow pace of the ancient town all to yourself. It's not noisy at all, making it super comfortable to duck in and rest your feet after a long walk. My first encounter was a total accident! I had just come down from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain that day. It was evening, pouring rain, and the temperature had plummeted. The cold wind had me shivering, and I stumbled upon this little shop while walking aimlessly. The owner saw me shivering at a glance and, before I even ordered, brought over a large bowl of piping hot bone broth to help me warm up. Instantly, all the fatigue from climbing the mountain vanished, and I was completely won over. I came back for a second visit the next day and completely fell in love with their roasted meat rice noodles. The portions are huge, the value is incredible, and you can eat your fill at an affordable price. The tangy, appetizing broth is refreshing and cuts through the grease in the summer—the more you slurp, the more hooked you get. Rice noodles are free to refill, so big eaters and hungry travelers have nothing to worry about. The roasted meat is charred and flavorful, and paired with the sour soup, the texture is incredibly rich. The owner is exceptionally honest and gentle. He carefully gives tourists tips on how to explore Baisha, explaining niche routes and places to avoid. If you don't know how to get around Baisha, just ask him—no sales pitches, no tricks, just rare sincerity. The old house environment is quiet and not noisy. Whether you're hiding from the rain or resting your feet on a sunny day, it's perfect. A bowl of hot soup paired with tangy rice noodles is just the right way to recharge after exploring the Snow Mountain.

Traveling with kids, I really don't want to rush between attractions. Sleep in, take it easy when tired, and head wherever it's less crowded. An 8-day, 7-night slow-paced trip, and the experience was great. Day 1 ✈️ Fly from Shenzhen to Lijiang. Renting a car in advance is a game changer; picking it up at the airport is super convenient. Didn't dive straight into the crowds in Dali; our first stop was Baisha Ancient Town. We mostly got around on e-scooters here. It costs a few dozen yuan to ride for half a day, which is very convenient for exploring the town. Took the kid to Hutuwo Ranch to feed the lambs. It's 10 yuan for a basket of veggies. The lambs chased the kid around, and they had a blast. The scenery is average, but as long as the kid is happy, that's enough. Stumbled upon Yundi'an in the evening; just buy a coffee to enter. I personally love this place! The grounds are open and clean, and the kid can run wild. Definitely come in the evening—around 20°C with a breeze, it's relaxing and great for photos. The UV rays are too strong during the day. Day 2: Continued wandering around Baisha. The ancient town isn't big, and there's an old street nearby. No need to obsess over navigation; just wandering through the alleys often leads to little surprises. Took the kid to try pea pod handicrafts—quietly doing some DIY. In the afternoon, rode the e-scooter around Lijiang Ancient Town and found a coffee shop to rest and have some cake. In the evening, visited Zhongyi Market. Lots of fruits I'd never seen before, and it's full of local life. It's just that there are a lot of cars at night, so we parked a bit further away and walked over. Day 3: A very fortunate choice for this trip. For summer vacation, we skipped the crowded Shuanglang and Xizhou and came straight to Wenbi Village. Stopped along the way; the fruit sold by local farmers on the roadside was sweet and affordable. The ancient towns on the west side of the sea are great for sunsets, but the east side has wider views and fewer people. With a kid, I prefer the east side. The homestay we stayed at was very quiet, avoiding the traffic jams of the main crowds. In the afternoon, went to Red Stone Coffee. Took the sightseeing bus to the top of the mountain so we didn't have to hike up. Sat and waited for the Erhai Lake sunset; the scenery was so healing. At night, after the kid fell asleep, had a barbecue on the terrace with my partner. With the evening breeze blowing, this is what a vacation is all about. Day 4: Drove for over 1 hour to Shaxi, a place I absolutely love. Rice paddies everywhere, quiet and peaceful, no noise. The Yunnan sun is too intense, so we went back to the homestay for a nap at noon and didn't head out again until 4 or 5 PM when the sun was weaker. Rode the e-scooter around the village and rice paddies, sat at a rice paddy coffee shop, and told the kid a bit about rice paddies. Shaxi at sunset has such a great vibe. Day 5–6: Stayed in Shuhe. Didn't go to any paid attractions. Went to the fishing village at Lashihai, a free wetland corridor where you can see horses. It's perfect for a quiet outing with the kid. Took the kid to try tie-dyeing. Making things by hand gave the kid a great sense of accomplishment. Ran into a rain shower and even saw a double rainbow—a little surprise on the trip. Day 7–8: Spent the last two days exploring Lijiang Ancient Town and the night market. Ate some delicious stir-fried rice noodles and bought a few small souvenirs, whiling away the time slowly. On the eighth day, after lunch, visited a coffee shop on the hilltop before heading to the airport for the return trip. 8 days and 7 nights, not rushing the schedule, not trying to check off every single spot. The Li traditional spinning, dyeing, weaving, and embroidery techniques are a national intangible cultural heritage passed down through generations of Hainan Li women. In 2009, they were included in UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and were successfully transferred to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024. I've been to Lijiang many times, and finally, I spent an afternoon making a cute tile cat! The tile cat is part of the Naxi people's intangible cultural heritage. Locals believe that when it guards the roof ridge, it can swallow gold and bring good fortune. The atmosphere in this shop is great; you can drink coffee while looking at the snow mountain, and I suddenly felt like making a tile cat for myself. The teacher helped prepare the clay mold, and the guidance was very detailed, so it went smoothly even with zero crafting experience. The teacher also shared folk stories of Lijiang and knowledge about how the Yunnan Art School preserves this craft, and before I knew it, I had finished making it. In the past, I just did quick sightseeing, but this time I deeply experienced the life and culture of Yunnan, and I love it even more. Yunnan, Lijiang, Baisha—I will keep coming back.
