Barbed wire, fencing electrified at lethal voltage, signalling systems and gut-toting guards turned this beautiful landscape into a heavily restricted ‘forbidden zone’. That history is unusually tangible here. Below the castle stands the Gate to Freedom, a memorial to those who died trying to cross the Iron Curtain. And in December 1989, as communism collapsed, Devín became a place of liberation: during the ‘Ahoj Europa’ (Hello Europe) protest crowds gathered on both sides of the border, while people began cutting through the barbed wire. We then walked the kilometre or so north to the East Slovak Museum. It opens at 09:00 every day except if you’ve arrived on a Monday, when (sorry) you’re out of luck because it’s closed all day. It has rooms dedicated to women’s fashion through the ages, the Baroque period, the gothic period, and, surprisingly, an interesting collection of live reptiles and invertebrates on the top floor. The highlight for me, though, was the Košice treasure hoard - hundreds of perfectly preserved gold coins displayed in a real live bank vault in the basement. 4. Feeling that we were on the home straight, now, we opted for an early, relaxed lunch around Hlavná. If you’re still near the cathedral, Republika Východu is an easy option; this restaurant is the self-proclaimed capital of the Eastern Republic and has a menu of traditional Slovak dishes brought ‘up to the moment’. 5. If you have any additional time, you could visit the Children’s Railway 4km outside Košice (see my next post). Top Tips: 1. there is an official left-luggage service at Košice station. It opens at 7am. 2. If (like us) the electrical sockets in your train sleeper compartment didn’t work, the ‘Bistro’ at Košice station is open from 6am, but only has one electrical socket, right at the far end of the cafe. A slightly later-opening (7am weekdays) but better option is Saint Coffee, on the corner of Mlynskà opposite the cathedral.
