While others flock to popular spots, I'm chilling out. I personally tested these less-known destinations.
August–September, does everywhere feel expensive? That's because you haven't found the right places. Airfares haven't doubled, and attractions aren't overcrowded. I'll share a list of places I've personally tested, proving you can experience "wild luxury" even on a 3,000-yuan monthly salary.
1️⃣ Xining | Qinghai
Most people treat Xining as a transit point to Tibet, leaving after a hurried night, which is a shame. I stayed here for three days and discovered two things: first, you don't need air conditioning in summer, and second, you can eat more satisfyingly for a few dozen yuan than anywhere else.
⏰ Arrive at Ta'er Monastery before 9 AM, before the tourists pour in. The butter lamps glow in the dim light, and the prayer wheels' wooden handles are polished smooth. Don't rush to take photos; first, listen to a debate. It's more impactful than any explanation.
🍜 After leaving Ta'er Monastery, take a taxi directly to "Ma Zhong Restaurant" in Chengzong District. Hand-grabbed lamb is over 60 yuan per jin. Dip it in salt and pepper; it's fatty but not greasy. Don't trust "influencer spots"; the yogurt you queue for two hours for isn't as good as the 5-yuan cup from a roadside tricycle.
⚠️ Dongguan Grand Mosque has a Friday afternoon gathering; non-Muslims cannot enter the main hall, but the surrounding market is great for browsing. For accommodation, choose Chenxi District; economy hotels are around 150 yuan and close to Mojia Street.
2️⃣ Altay Prefecture | Xinjiang
Don't always focus on Kanas's yellow leaves in September and October; accommodation prices can skyrocket then. Go in late August; the grass is still green, there are far fewer people, and prices are friendly.
⏰ At 6 AM, there's a thin mist over Kanas Lake, and your footsteps are the only sound on the boardwalk. I was lucky that day and saw the pine forest on the opposite bank slowly emerge as the morning mist dissipated, like an ink wash painting unfolding.
🍜 Don't eat Da Pan Ji (big plate chicken) in the scenic area; it's expensive and tough. Go back to "Altay Renjia" in Jiadengyu Town for a hot pot for 100 yuan. The lamb and carrots are stewed until tender, and the broth is so flavorful you'll want three bowls.
🚄 Take a train from Urumqi to Beitun, then carpool to Kanas; it's half the price of flying directly. Go to Koktokay in the afternoon; the sunlight turns the granite golden, and you'll have the entire canyon to yourself.
3️⃣ Mianyang | Sichuan
Chengdu locals love to visit Mianyang on weekends, not for anything else but for the rice noodles and the peaceful Qiang villages.
📍 Beichuan Qiang City Tourist Area: Outsiders might think "Qiang City" is an artificial attraction, but the combination of the old county seat ruins and the Banacha Commercial Street can keep you busy for half a day. I arrived at 3 PM that day, first walking through the earthquake ruins, which left me feeling heavy-hearted, but then I emerged into the lively Qiang market.
🍜 Find any "Qiang Village Local Cuisine" restaurant in Banacha. The cured pork ribs stewed with radish are delicious; the cured flavor seeps into the soup, and the radish is incredibly sweet. A set meal is just over 30 yuan, enough for two people.
⚠️ Note: Loud noises are prohibited in the ruins area. Don't wear high heels; the flagstone paths are uneven. Stay in Mianyang city; economy hotels are just over 100 yuan. The next morning, you can also visit Fule Mountain, which is free and cool.
4️⃣ Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture | Gansu
Many people only know Lanzhou, overlooking Linxia, the "Little Mecca of China." The green domes of the mosques and the muddy waters of the Yellow River blend together, creating a strange tranquility.
⏰ In the morning, go to Liujiaxia Tourist Resort. Take a boat tour to see the confluence of the Yellow River and the Tao River, one clear and one muddy, like two silk ribbons tearing across the water. The boat ticket is 50 yuan, and the trip lasts one hour.
🍜 After getting off the boat, head straight to "Er Sa Shouzhua Cheng." The hand-grabbed lamb neck is their specialty; the meat is so tender it falls apart with a poke of chopsticks. Pair it with a bowl of Sanpaotai tea for 8 yuan; the sound of scraping the bowl is delightful.
⚠️ The grottoes in Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourist Area are stunning, but the steps are steep, so those with mobility issues should be cautious. The ticket includes a guide; following them will give you many stories. Stay in the city; guesthouses are just over 100 yuan. In the evening, you can also explore Bafang Shisanxiang, which is free.
5️⃣ Huzhou | Zhejiang
Nanxun Ancient Town, overshadowed by Wuzhen and Xitang, I think it's more worth staying for two days.
⏰ After 5 PM, when the tour groups leave, the ancient town reveals its true charm. By the river at Baijianlou, old people are washing vegetables, cooking smoke drifts from wooden windows, and your footsteps are the only sound on the flagstone path.
🍜 "Longfeng Noodle House"'s double-topping noodles, with fried fish and crispy pork, are 20 yuan a bowl. The noodles are thin, the broth is rich. After eating, walk back to your guesthouse along the river, feeling slightly tipsy from the breeze.
⚠️ Don't buy the combo ticket; many small attractions close at 4 PM. Just exploring the free areas is enough for a full day of photos. Take the high-speed train to Huzhou Station, then a taxi to the ancient town, about 30 minutes and 30 yuan. Stay in an inn near Baijianlou; you can see the river from your window.
6️⃣ Ankang | Shaanxi
A less-known small city south of the Qinling Mountains, several degrees cooler than Xi'an in summer, with prices similar to thirty years ago.
📍 Qiancenghe (Thousand-Layer River): The name sounds rustic, but inside are layers of waterfalls and deep pools. The water is as clear as glass. I dipped my feet in, and the cold gave me a jolt. The ticket is 40 yuan, and I didn't see ten people all afternoon.
🍜 After leaving Qiancenghe, go to the county town to eat "steamed cold noodles" for 5 yuan a serving. Drizzle with chili oil and vinegar; it's sour, spicy, and appetizing. Locals also add a portion of braised dried tofu for 2 yuan, eating while watching old men play chess on the street.
⏰ Fengyan Ancient Terraces are best visited in autumn. In late August, the rice begins to turn yellow. At dusk, the terraces look like scattered gold on the hillside. Stay one night at a farmhouse for 80 yuan, including three meals. Waking up early to see the morning mist rolling down the mountainside is worth it.
7️⃣ Yangjiang | Guangdong
Don't think of Sanya's prices just because it's a beach. Hailing Island in Yangjiang has soft sand, cheap seafood, and most importantly, it's not crowded like summer.
⏰ Go to Dajiaowan Maritime Silk Road Tourist Area at 4 PM; the sun isn't as harsh, and the seawater is a warm green. I walked on the beach; the sand was as fine as flour, and the waves gently lapped, slow and leisurely.
🍜 In the evening, go to "Fisherman's New Village" in Zhapo Town. A dozen oysters are 30 yuan, grilled with garlic until sizzling, and the fresh juice bursts in your mouth with one bite. Order a sea urchin fried rice; the grains of rice are distinct and not fishy.
⚠️ Don't stay in a sea-view hotel; guesthouses right by the sea are just over 100 yuan, and you can walk to the beach in two minutes. Buy swimsuits and shovels in advance; they're twice as expensive in the scenic area.
8️⃣ Jilin
Many people only visit Changbai Mountain, missing this old city by the Songhua River. In late August, a cool breeze blows over Songhua Lake in Jilin. Although Wusong Island doesn't have rime ice, the reed marshes are breathtakingly beautiful.
⏰ In the morning, go to Songhua Lake. Take a boat tour; the ticket is only 30 yuan. The lake water is emerald green, with green hills reflected on both banks. The wind rocked the boat, and I leaned on the railing for a nap, feeling as if I were in Jiangnan.
⚠️ Don't eat grilled fish by the pier; it's expensive and fishy. Go back to the city to "Lao Bai Rou Guan" for a sauerkraut and pork hot pot with blood sausage. Pour plate after plate into the pot; you'll be stuffed for only 50 yuan per person.
🍜 If you go in September, the grapes by Songhua Lake are ripe, 5 yuan a jin, so sweet they're sticky. Stay near the train station; budget hotels are just over 100 yuan. The next day, you can also visit Beishan Park, which is free.
These places are either routes I've discovered after trial and error to avoid pitfalls, or heartfelt recommendations from friends. They won't make you spend unnecessarily or get crammed in like sardines. Let's chat in the comments; what other less-known places do you think are worth a trip in August?
