Located just outside Alta in the Norwegian Arctic, Sorrisniva Igloo is a year-round resort run by the family that has lived here since 1880 and their descendants, offering guests quality accommodations in new Arctic wilderness lodges, unique stays in the world's northernmost igloo hotel, world-renowned cuisine and fine dining experiences, and a variety of wilderness adventures that vary greatly from one Arctic season to the next. My personal experience with the Ice House Hotel is that it’s okay to look at it, but for me, staying here is just asking for trouble. The feeling over there was like the house in Suzhou where I lived in my childhood. When it was frozen outside in the winter, the water in the cups at home would also be frozen the next morning. So I have experienced this before, and it is not a very comfortable thing. I started 07:00 in July, hit the tip at 11:00, signed the logbook box, the Nordkapp cliff visible across the water with zero crowd. I flew Oslo→Alta (NOK 900), walked from the town centre (30 min), and climbed the 300 m heath hill at 07:00. The mossy cliff is the east face where the Alta river canyon cuts below—Racomitrium and Pleurozium on the exposed heath rock, with Empetrum crowberry and reindeer lichen (Cladonia) in the wind-scoured mats. The "coastal heath" view takes in the Altafjord, the Sami rock-art sites at Jiepmaluokta (5 km north, UNESCO, NOK 130 entry if you add it), and the Kautokeino plateau behind. I watched a gyrfalcon work the cliff at 08:00, then walked the ridge 2 km north to the old coastguard cairn. No hut, no fee, no permit. Mistake: I came in December for aurora and the hill was black ice—microspikes essential Nov–Apr. Another: I assumed Alta = polar night darkness and missed that Feb–Mar gives both snow and 06:00 dawn light. Would you walk Komsafjell at dawn for the fjord heath and add the Alta rock-art museum, or save the hill for a 22:00 aurora night instead?

Trasti & Trine was one of my favorite stays in Alta because it’s not just a hotel. The whole place was created around the passions of two people. Johnny Trasti is a chef, while Trine Lyrek is all about dogs and dog sledding. They basically brought these two completely different worlds together, which is why this place is known for both its food and its huskies. We actually chose to stay here because we wanted to try dog sledding. Unfortunately, when we visited there still wasn’t enough snow, so our activity couldn’t happen. I was pretty disappointed at first, but in the end I was still really happy we came. One big reason was the food. We had already booked their dinner course, and I honestly didn’t realize how well known the restaurant was until we got there. There weren’t that many guests staying overnight when we visited, probably because the snow season hadn’t really started yet, but at dinner the restaurant was completely full! Some people seemed to come here just for dinner without staying at the hotel. The menu focuses a lot on seasonal ingredients from Northern Norway, and we got to try things we normally wouldn’t eat, including elk. The dishes came out course by course, beautifully presented, and it really felt like we were experiencing food from this part of Norway rather than just having a regular hotel dinner. The accommodation itself is surrounded by forest and feels very peaceful. There are different styles of rooms and cabins, including more modern cabins tucked among the trees. Behind the property, there’s also a small trail where you can walk into the forest. And I have to mention the breakfast because I loved it! It wasn’t a huge hotel buffet, but everything was arranged so beautifully — salmon, cold cuts, cheeses, eggs, fruit, vegetables, bread and lots of little things to choose from. Simple, cozy and very Norwegian. We even managed to catch a little Northern Lights around the property that night, which made the stay even more memorable. So even though we missed the dog sledding, I still really enjoyed our night here. Good food, a quiet stay, a beautiful breakfast and Northern Lights — definitely a place I would recommend in Alta. Alta may not be the biggest city in Northern Norway, but it has such a calm, beautiful atmosphere. It is a great place for anyone who loves nature, Nordic food, winter activities, and a slower kind of travel. One of the places I stayed at was Trasti & Trine, and I really loved the atmosphere there. It is a cozy Nordic-style lodge surrounded by nature, and it is also known for dog sledding experiences. Unfortunately, when I visited that year, the snow arrived later than usual, so I could not try the dog sledding. The food here was one of the highlights. We had a Nordic-style course meal made with local ingredients, and it was delicious. I would even recommend coming here just for the restaurant, even if you are not staying overnight. The whole experience felt warm, local, and very Alta. Another thing I loved about staying here was how close it was to nature. There are walking routes where you can stroll through the forest and down toward the river. We also see a little bit of the Northern Lights from here. Another must-visit place in Alta is Alta Museum. I was really impressed by this museum. It is not only an indoor museum, but also a huge outdoor area where you can walk along paths and see ancient rock carvings that date back thousands of years. The rock art in Alta is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, and it shows scenes from the lives of prehistoric hunter-gatherer people in the Arctic. I would recommend giving Alta Museum a full day . The outdoor walking route is spacious and beautiful, with views over the fjord and surrounding nature. There is also a café where you can sit, rest, and enjoy the view after walking around. The Cathedral of the Northern Lights is another landmark you should not miss. This modern church is one of the most beautiful buildings in Alta. Its design was inspired by the movement of the Northern Lights, with a soft, spiral-like shape that feels very elegant and unique. Alta is also a great base for Arctic activities. Depending on the season, you can join activities such as dog sledding, Northern Lights tours, snowmobile trips, and whale watching. Getting around Alta is quite easy. Local buses are operated by Snelandia, and you can either pay on board or use the Snelandia Mobillett app to buy tickets. #europetrip Husky sledding with Trasti & Trine was one of the absolute highlights of our time in Alta, and an experience I would recommend without hesitation. From start to finish, everything was professionally run, well explained, and genuinely memorable. The experience began with a thorough introduction from the staff, who were incredibly informative and clearly passionate about what they do. We were shown how to prepare and kit up our huskies ourselves, which immediately made the experience feel more hands-on and authentic rather than something you simply sit back and watch. All cold-weather clothing was provided by Trasti & Trine, which was a huge plus and meant we were warm and comfortable throughout. Once ready, we set off as part of a group, following a lead guide through the Arctic landscape. I controlled our sled myself, while my two children sat on the sled for the entire journey, which made it both exciting and family-friendly.
