Welcome to the finale of my [Hidden Gems Near Nagoya] series (3/3)! In the previous parts, I explored Nagahama and Hikone. If you're looking for a quick getaway without a long commute, Kiyosu Castle in Kiyosu City, Aichi Prefecture, is just about 30 minutes from Nagoya! 🏯 🏮 Step Into the Dreamy World of "Spirited Away" The most iconic sight at Kiyosu Castle is the brilliant red "Ote Bridge" spanning the Gojo River. Set against blue skies and white clouds, the red bridge and the black-and-white castle tower complement each other perfectly. From a distance, it looks just like a magical scene from Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film "Spirited Away"—an absolute must-visit for photos! 🚶‍♂️ A Relaxing Stroll It’s a leisurely 15-minute walk from JR Kiyosu Station. The path follows the railway and is flat and easy to navigate. As you get closer to the castle, you’ll pass through a lush green park where you can watch locals taking peaceful strolls. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy. 🏯 The Castle Tower: Zen Gardens and River Views Inside the castle, you can admire precious historical sword exhibits and impressive portraits of the legendary Oda Nobunaga. Make sure to climb to the top floor of the tower for the views: · Zen Karesansui: The garden is covered in white sand with beautiful Zen ripple patterns and natural stones. Looking down from above brings instant peace of mind. · Panoramic Views: Take in the entire river, the red bridge, and the Kiyosu city skyline at once. The view is incredibly open and airy. 🛍️ High-Quality Souvenirs + Refreshing Treats The souvenir shop next to the castle offers some beautifully designed items: · Black & Gold Folding Fans: Featuring the Kiyosu Castle and Oda family crest, the black and gold color scheme looks powerful and elegant. · Wooden Goshuin Books: These feature intricate cherry blossom wood carvings with a premium texture—perfect for collectors. If you need a break, grab a drink or try their unique "Pumpkin Soft Serve." It’s refreshing and perfect for cooling down! Kiyosu Castle is surrounded by cherry blossoms, making it a breathtaking sight during the spring festival! You can easily visit and return within half a day, so I highly recommend saving a few hours at the end of your trip to unwind here. Which famous Japanese castle is at the top of your bucket list? This is a recommended card lounge at Chubu Centrair International Airport: [Premier Lounge Centrair 2] Those with gold or platinum cards from various credit card companies can use this lounge. (For example, Rakuten Gold or Epos Gold) Even without a card, you can use the lounge by paying a fee (1,570 yen for those 12 years and older). Drinks and snacks are available, and they serve Ichiban Shibori beer, making it a great choice for beer lovers. Most seats are for one person, but there are also large sofas, making it a comfortable space even for those with children. This lounge can be used not only upon departure but also upon arrival. You will need to show your boarding pass. There are no restrooms, so please inform the front desk staff and receive a re-entry card before using the lounge. This lounge seems to be less crowded than Premium Lounge 1. It might be a better choice for those who want to relax. #Centrair #AirportLounge #CardLounge #DomesticTravel

This is nuu cafe in Tokoname, Nagoya, and it’s truly one of my favorite spots in the city. The entire place feels like a fairytale forest, where lush greenery and an old wooden house blend perfectly. It’s incredibly serene. We arrived before opening, so we spent some time browsing the accessory and lifestyle shop next door, and we were immediately captivated by the space. From Nagoya, it’s about a 30-minute ride on the Meitetsu line to Tokoname Station. As you walk along the "Yakimono Sanpo-michi" (Pottery Path), the atmosphere changes instantly—winding alleys, old wooden houses covered in ivy, ceramic studios, and little shops tucked away in the leaves. It feels like stepping into the pages of an old fairytale book. After a short walk, we turned into a quieter path and found nuu. The entrance is subtle: a half-open white wooden door, a small "Open" blackboard, and walls draped in green vines and autumn leaves. A simple white sign stands out front, beautifully scripted with "nuu kimono cafe | gallery," noting hours from 10:00 to 16:00. The surrounding stone walls are layered with withered vines and fresh growth, and the stone path beneath is scattered with dry leaves. With sunlight filtering through the canopy, the scene is so quiet you can only hear the wind. Since they weren't open yet, we browsed the lifestyle shop first. Connected to the cafe, it shares the same traditional "kominka" style. Inside, wooden shelves and racks are filled with handmade fabric bags—patchwork, tie-dye, and prints—some adorned with newspaper-style trinkets and shells. Wooden cabinets hold small boxes, accessories, fabrics, and baskets, while bags and small artworks hang on the walls. Light streams through the lattice windows, casting soft silhouettes. The air smells faintly of wood and fabric; stepping inside feels like time has skipped a beat. When we stepped out, the garden was even more breathtaking. Dense greenery lines the stone paths, and large beige and orange parasols shade round wooden tables and folding chairs, creating beautiful dappled light. Further in, a large vintage ceramic jar is filled with round water lily leaves reflecting the sky, flanked by fruit trees bearing green fruit. Glass windows and wooden doors hide behind the leaves. Looking up, the dark wooden walls are almost entirely hidden by thick ivy, with the gray tiled roof contrasting sharply against the blue sky and white clouds. Soft light peeks through a small second-story window—it truly looks like a secret cottage in the woods. Another corridor caught my eye—wooden beams overhead, a single minimalist light bulb hanging down, and an old rocking chair in the corner piled with pine cones. Potted plants line the windowsill, and a large window looks out onto lush trees and sunshine. As the breeze blows and the vines sway, the space is so tranquil you just want to stay forever. This isn't a noisy tourist trap; it’s a place to truly slow down. The greenery, old wood, sunlight, and handmade touches create a "living in a fairytale" vibe. Even before sitting down, I felt completely recharged. I’ll share more about the interior details and the food in the next post. Restaurant Info~ nuu is located at 2-73 Sakaemachi, Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, within the famous Yakimono Sanpo-michi (Pottery Path). This path is the birthplace of Tokoname-yaki pottery and is full of nostalgic charm, featuring winding alleys, old warehouses, pottery shops, and shaded paths. History & Style: The owner renovated a 100-year-old traditional folk house, preserving the original wooden structure, tiled roof, and garden while adding modern minimalist and Japanese elements. In addition to the cafe, the space includes a gallery, a lifestyle shop, and a kimono area, featuring handmade accessories, antique kimonos, and fabric bags. Concept: It operates on a "Share Kitchen" model, with different chefs on different days. The menu highlights local Chita Peninsula ingredients, organic seasonings, and Tokoname-yaki tableware. Signatures: Homemade cakes (apple cake, peach cheesecake, etc.), hand-drip coffee (specifically the original blend from Mizuho Coffee Roasting), 100% fresh juices (apple, peach, grape, etc.), and a daily limited lunch plate. Autumn in Central Japan has a depth that exceeds expectations. It lacks Tokyo's frantic pace and Osaka's constant bustle. Traveling here is about blue skies framed by castle eaves, afternoon sunlight filtering through maple leaves, the sudden stillness of a shrine's forest, and those few minutes spent watching a plane glide across an orange-red dusk. If you happen to visit in autumn, Central Japan is almost unfairly beautiful. 🍁 🏯 Stop 1: Starting with Japanese Castles for an Instant Sense of History What struck me most on this trip were the castles. White walls, black tiles, and layered eaves against the crisp, clear autumn sky—every shot feels like a scene from a Japanese drama. Specifically, Inuyama Castle. Inuyama isn't the kind of massive fortress that takes all day to walk through. Its refined scale allows you to truly feel the atmosphere of the wooden keep and the surrounding castle town. If you're starting from Nagoya, a day trip to Inuyama is perfect: see the castle in the morning, wander and eat in the afternoon, and head back to Nagoya at a leisurely pace. The other standout is Nagoya Castle. It offers a completely different vibe—grander and more imposing, with its iconic golden shachihoko being instantly recognizable. If Inuyama Castle represents the "flavor of antiquity," Nagoya Castle embodies the "prestige of Owari." Seeing both in one trip doesn't feel repetitive at all. 🍁 The Real Star of Autumn: The Red Leaves However, what truly made me stop in my tracks wasn't a building—it was the autumn foliage. The colors transition from green to yellow and orange, all the way to deep red. Sunlight dapples through the leaves, while ponds reflect the entire crimson canopy. You’ll realize that the most charming part of Japanese maple viewing isn't just "a sea of red," but how the red leaves, pine trees, stone bridges, ponds, and pavilions all harmonize within a single frame. In some places, you don't even need to look for an angle. Just walk a few steps, and there’s a postcard waiting for you. 📷 If you're here for photography, I highly recommend saving your time for 9–11 AM and 2–4 PM. The angled sunlight through the maples creates much more depth than the midday sun. ⛩️ Ise Jingu: The Silence of the Forest That Photos Can't Capture If you want a change of pace from castles and foliage, I’d add Ise Jingu to the itinerary. It’s not an attraction that relies on flashy architecture. What sticks with you is the atmosphere once you enter the forest. The towering trees, simple wooden structures, and light breaking through the canopy naturally make you slow down. The contrast is especially sharp after the buzz of cities like Tokyo, Osaka, or Nagoya. It’s not about "things to do," but rather the pure comfort of just walking through it. 🛖 Shirakawa-go: A Different Side of Japan Leaving the city behind and heading into the mountains, the Gassho-style village of Shirakawa-go is the one place that makes you wonder, "How does a place like this still exist in Japan?" The massive thatched roofs, wooden houses, and mountain valley scenery feel worlds away from the Nagoya of a few days prior. In autumn, there’s an extra layer of gold and red. If you visit a bit later when winter hits and the village is blanketed in snow, it transforms into an entirely different world. This is why I love traveling in Central Japan: you can move from a modern city to an ancient castle, a sacred shrine, and a mountain village in just a few days without flying across the country. The scenery is always changing. ✈️ Ending the Trip with a Sunset The favorite photo of a trip isn't always from a famous landmark. It might just be an afternoon before heading home, watching the sun approach the horizon. The sky turns from pale yellow to orange, then deepens into a rich crimson. A plane just happens to fly over the sun. No castles. No red leaves. No World Heritage sites. But at that moment, you think, "Ah, this trip is really coming to an end." 🚆 Recommended Itinerary for First-Timers If these scenes resonate with you, I’d use Nagoya as a hub for a 5-7 day trip: Nagoya → Inuyama → Ise → Shirakawa-go → Back to Nagoya Nagoya covers the city, shopping, and grand castles; Inuyama offers the old town vibe; Ise slows the pace down; and Shirakawa-go takes you deep into the Japanese countryside. During peak foliage, you can tuck in a garden or two. This way, you aren't changing hotels every day, and you aren't seeing the same thing twice. 🍂 Why is Autumn Perfect for Central Japan? Because the region’s strength isn't just one "super sight," but the way it strings together Japan’s most classic elements: 🏯 Ancient Castles 🍁 Maple Gardens ⛩️ Shrine Forests 🛖 Thatched Villages 🍵 Historic Castle Towns 🌲 Mountain Landscapes 🌅 Autumn Sunsets Tokyo shows you Japan’s speed. Osaka shows you its energy. Kyoto shows you its classical beauty. But Central Japan feels like walking through Japan at your own pace. You don't have to rush. If the leaves are pretty, stop. If an alley looks interesting, walk in. Spend an afternoon by a garden, watching the light move from the maple leaves to the water. Travel doesn't always need to be packed. The moments that stay in your memory are often the unplanned minutes. 🍁

When planning a trip to Nagoya, most people think of Nagoya Castle and Hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice). However, I’ve recently fallen in love with Aichi’s coastal areas and highly recommend exploring them. ⠀⠀ Himakajima, for instance, offers a charming fishing village vibe. Known as "Octopus Island" for its local specialty, it’s the perfect getaway for cycling by the sea in summer or indulging in fresh seafood in winter. ⠀⠀ If you’ve already visited Nagoya several times, consider exploring further out. Here’s a guide to Aichi’s urban and suburban gems. Recommended Duration ・Nagoya City Only: 1–2 days ・Nagoya + Inuyama or Ghibli Park: 2–3 days ・Nagoya + Mikawa Bay Onsens or Chita Peninsula: 3–4 days for a more relaxed pace Nagoya City: Family Favorites Nagoya City Science Museum & Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden: A popular duo for a family day trip. The Port of Nagoya area is also a must-visit. Nagakute & Toyota: Ghibli Park and Tech History Ghibli Park: Step into the magical world of Hayao Miyazaki’s animations. The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology is the birthplace of the Toyota Group. Built on the site of a former textile mill, it showcases Toyota's evolution from textiles to automotive giant. The museum features two main sections—the Textile Machinery Pavilion and the Automobile Pavilion—highlighting the technology that powered Japan’s modernization. It perfectly captures Toyota’s spirit of "Research and Creativity" and the art of manufacturing, making it a hit for car enthusiasts and families alike. Inuyama & Northern Owari Inuyama Castle & Castle Town: National Treasure and Nostalgic Streets Inuyama Castle is one of Japan’s oldest surviving castle towers. Perched majestically on a hill, it is nicknamed "Hakutei-jo" (White Emperor Castle). Built in 1537, it is listed as one of Japan’s Top 100 Castles and is a designated National Treasure, alongside icons like Himeji and Matsumoto. The watchtower-style architecture features three stories on the outside and four stories plus two basement levels inside. Beyond the castle itself, the surrounding castle town beautifully preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period.

#bucketlistdestinations Looking for a quieter, more unexpected side of Aichi? 🌿 During the rice harvest season, some rural corners of Aichi transform into beautiful golden landscapes, with rice fields stretching beneath the open sky. And in one charming spot, you can even find a Totoro-inspired figure standing among the fields, creating a scene that feels straight out of a Studio Ghibli movie. ✨ It’s not a famous tourist attraction or a crowded photo spot — just a peaceful countryside moment surrounded by rice fields, mountains, and the slow rhythm of rural Japan. 📸 Best for: 🌾 Golden rice-field scenery 🌿 Countryside photography 🍃 Slow travel & hidden Japan 🐻 Ghibli fans looking for something different If you love discovering the quiet, nostalgic side of Japan beyond Tokyo and Kyoto, this is the kind of place worth putting on your list. Tip: Rice fields change throughout the year, so the dreamy golden scenery is seasonal. #travel2026 #thingstodo

There is a highly recommended popular cafe near Nagoya Station—Sunday Fuller Cafe (サンデーフラーカフェ). Located on the 2nd floor of Nishihirokoji Building in Meieki-minami, it's not a huge place, but there's always a long line. Many young people come specifically to take photos and enjoy desserts. When we went, we also had to line up. We waited for about 15 to 20 minutes, slowly making our way from the stairs to the inside before getting a seat. The shop's style is very unique, a perfect mix of American retro and industrial styles: concrete ceilings and walls, vintage furniture, neon lights, and handmade decor. Stepping inside, you immediately feel a relaxed and full-of-character vibe. There are not many seats inside (only a dozen or so, including counter and small tables), so lining up during peak hours is very common, especially on weekends or during afternoon tea time. Their most famous item is definitely the Croffle—waffle shapes made with croissant dough, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. We tried a few kinds: a savory version drizzled with cheese sauce and herbs, as well as a sweet one with bananas, cream, caramel, and powdered sugar. Both the presentation and taste were super appealing. The drink selection is also nice. For example, the iced matcha latte (a beautiful green, very refreshing with ice) and iced coffee topped with ice cream go perfectly with the desserts. The overall vibe is relaxed. Many young people come here to take photos and chat, making it perfect for a short break or afternoon tea. Shop Info~ Address: 2F Nishihirokoji Building, 1-17-2 Meieki-minami, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Hours: Generally 8:00–24:00 daily (L.O. around 23:30), irregular holidays Features: Signature croffles, specialty coffee, American retro space; there's a sister bar on the 4th floor of the same building Notes: Limited seating, no reservations. Be prepared to wait during busy times; electronic payments like PayPay are accepted How to Get There~ Sunday Fuller Cafe is very close to Nagoya Station, just about a 7–10 minute walk. Most convenient: From JR Nagoya Station, Meitetsu Nagoya Station, or Kintetsu Nagoya Station, go through the underground mall (e.g., Miyako Underground Mall) and exit near Exit 4. Then walk towards Hirokoji-dori and look for the Nishihirokoji Building. Simply put: Exit from the south side of Nagoya Station, walk east along Hirokoji-dori (Prefectural Route 60) for a few minutes. When you see the Nishihirokoji Building, go up to the 2nd floor. There's a "Sunday Fuller Cafe" sign at the entrance, and the stairs are usually where the line starts. Note: The building has multiple floors (2F Cafe, 4F Bar), so make sure you don't go to the wrong floor. There are paid parking lots nearby, but taking public transportation is recommended for convenience. If you're near Nagoya Station and looking for a cafe with character, great desserts, and a youthful vibe, Sunday Fuller Cafe is definitely worth a try. Even though you might have to wait a bit, eating the croffle and sipping a cold drink will leave you feeling very satisfied. Remember to leave some time for lining up, and enjoy this little moment of happiness in Meieki-minami!

The seafood portions are so over-the-top, they're practically made for your Instagram feed~ I visited the Sakae branch, and the vibe was so on point it felt just like chilling at an izakaya in Sapporo. Grabbing drinks there with a bunch of friends was an absolute blast! 1st photo ☕️ Kato Coffee Sakae Branch 📍1F Sakura Building, 1-3-2 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi As a specialty coffee shop, they boast an impressive variety of beans ✨ There is also a coffee concierge in the store who can help you select the perfect beans for your taste ☕ With its classic, wood-toned, and calming atmosphere, it is the perfect place for a relaxing morning. Since I was in Nagoya, I had to order the Ogura (sweet red bean) cream toast 🍞 It is a popular spot, so there might be a line, but if you visit after lunchtime, there are days when you can take your time and relax. ⸻ 2nd & 3rd photos 🏄♀️ MALIBU COFFEE 📍1F Sakae Nohgaku Building West, 5-6-33 Sakae, Naka-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Highly recommended if you are staying in the Sakae or Yabacho area ✨ It is a stylish, West Coast-style cafe—quite a rarity in Nagoya. A great spot to experience the everyday life of Nagoya 😊 If the shopping street starts opening up when you leave, enjoy a nice stroll on your way back 🚶♀️

This place is Katahara Onsen Ajisai no Sato, one of Japan’s most beautiful hydrangea spots — especially in June, when everything is in full bloom. Located near a quiet hot spring area in Aichi, the garden is home to over 50,000 hydrangeas in more than 100 varieties. The flowers spread across hills and pathways around Lake Hodaga, creating layers of color — soft blues, purples, and pinks blending into the greenery. But what really makes this place special is the night illumination. As evening falls, the entire garden lights up: · Hydrangeas glow softly under warm lights · Fireflies sometimes appear near the lake · The atmosphere becomes calm, almost dreamlike #japantrip #travel2026 #staycation

Visiting Inuyama Castle from Nagoya is incredibly easy. After arriving by train, I followed my map to the entrance. Since I visited during the off-season, there were hardly any tourists, which really allowed me to enjoy the experience. I highly recommend heading inside for a tour. I know what you might be thinking—castles are everywhere in Japan, and you might be feeling a bit of "castle fatigue," assuming they all look the same. It's like visiting Europe; after a while, every cathedral starts to look the same. But since you're already here, it’s well worth the visit! Inuyama Castle oozes traditional Japanese charm. Wearing a kimono for a photo shoot here is such a treat (I took a set of photos myself—the scenery is stunning without the crowds). I recommend visiting in mid-to-late May. You'll avoid the crowds, and the weather hasn't reached that peak summer heat yet. Transportation: Take the train from Nagoya to Inuyama Station. It’s a 15-20 minute walk from there. It’s very easy to find, so don’t worry—it’s a perfect spot for solo travelers too!

The Museum Meiji-mura is a quintessential destination near Nagoya and stands as Japan’s largest open-air museum of historical architecture. Stepping into the park feels like a journey back in time to the Meiji era. Located in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, it is easily accessible via the Meitetsu line and a connecting bus. Admission Prices Adults: 2,500 yen | High School Students: 1,500 yen | Elementary/Junior High: 700 yen | Free for preschoolers and those born in the Meiji era. Operating Hours (Current standard 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM) April–July, September, & October: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM August: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM | November: 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM December–February: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM The most unique feature of this museum is that it consists of original Meiji-era buildings relocated and reconstructed from across Japan. It houses about 60 historical structures, many of which are designated Important Cultural Properties. These are not replicas; they are genuine historical buildings. Must-see churches & Western-style buildings, European-style government offices, and old banks symbolize the Westernization of the Meiji period. A major highlight is the Main Entrance Hall of the old Imperial Hotel, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Its intricate geometric decorations make it one of the park’s most iconic landmarks. You can also ride authentic steam locomotives and vintage streetcars, offering a hands-on experience rather than just a sightseeing tour. From schools to post offices, the park perfectly recreates daily life during the Meiji era. Because of its authenticity, it has served as a filming location for many famous productions like *Rurouni Kenshin* and *Jin*. Visitors can rent kimonos or Meiji-style outfits for photos, enjoy retro Western-style dishes (such as curry and omurice), and even collect a limited-edition Meiji-mura postmark. The park is massive, spanning about 1 million square meters, so we recommend planning for a half-day to a full-day visit.

Many places in Japan welcome the splendid night cherry blossom scenes of spring 2026, with six classic night cherry blossom spots simultaneously lighting up the romantic spring nights: 🌸Hirosaki Park, Aomori Prefecture The 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival will be held from April 17 to May 5. The park features 2,600 cherry trees of 52 varieties, including over 400 century-old Somei Yoshino cherry trees with strong, upright trunks. Under the lighting along the west moat, the cherry blossoms are reflected upside down on the water, creating a stunning "water mirror cherry blossom" effect; standing on Shunyo Bridge, the scene blurs the line between reality and illusion, as if stepping into an ink painting dreamscape. The park also houses Japan’s oldest Somei Yoshino cherry tree, about 140 years old, and a naturally heart-shaped cherry branch. The night cherry blossom light show, which began in 1916, is recognized as a New Japan Night View Heritage. 🌸Odawara Castle Park, Kanagawa Prefecture The 2026 lighting event will take place from late March to early April. About 300 ancient cherry trees planted in the early Showa period surround the castle tower and moat, showcasing the charm of the Sengoku era under the interplay of light and shadow. Climbing to the top floor of the castle tower offers a panoramic view of the illuminated cherry blossom corridor and the nightscape of Sagami Bay, with the silhouette of the Boso Peninsula in the distance, blending history and poetry. 🌸Funakawa, Asahi Town, Toyama Prefecture The 2026 lighting event will be held from early to mid-April, with a special "Bonfire Night Cherry Blossom" event every Saturday evening. Along both banks, 280 Somei Yoshino cherry trees glow softly under warm yellow lanterns; the blooming period coincides with the remaining snow on Mount Asahi, tulips, and rapeseed flowers, creating a springtime quartet. Tulip petals are also used as natural fertilizer to nourish the cherry trees, adding a deeper cultural warmth to the night cherry blossoms. 🌸Maruoka Castle (Kasumi Castle), Fukui Prefecture The 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 24 to April 17. This castle, built in 1576 and one of the twelve remaining original castle towers, is embraced by about 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, whose blossoms swirl like mist around the ancient castle. The lantern lighting ceremony kicks off on March 24; on April 4 and 5, local specialty fairs and folk performances are held, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the culture of the Edo castle town while enjoying the cherry blossoms. 🌸Okazaki Castle Park, Aichi Prefecture The 2026 Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 25 to April 5. The birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the park’s 800 Somei Yoshino cherry trees are selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. At night, the castle tower and cherry trees along the Otogawa and Iga Rivers form a tunnel of light and shadow, with the river reflecting the blossoms and lanterns; the city’s natural monument, Okuyamada weeping cherry trees, are graceful and elegant. Food trucks set up along the riverbank offer a dual sensory delight of taste and sight. 🌸Kenrokuen Garden, Ishikawa Prefecture The 2026 night cherry blossom light show will be held from early to mid-April. The garden has 420 cherry trees of various varieties, blooming sequentially from Kanzakura to Kenrokuen Chrysanthemum cherry, with a long flowering period. Entering from the Katsurazaka Gate, the cherry shadows sway along the tree-lined path; at the Kaiken lantern spot, through the blossoms, you can gaze at the Kanazawa cityscape and the night view of Mount Utatsu, evoking the subtle poetry of an Eastern garden. 🌸Ogi Park, Saga Prefecture Lighting runs from late March to early April. This historic garden, built by the lord of the Nabeshima domain, has about 3,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, creating a grand scale. The night cherry blossoms reflect on the pond, with flickering lanterns, resembling a fairy tale world; the entire park is quiet and serene, making it an excellent place to experience the tranquil beauty of Kyushu’s spring nights. Night cherry blossoms are not just about viewing flowers; they are a springtime poem composed by light, shadow, wind, water, and a thousand years of floral history. Every lantern pauses to capture fleeting beauty, and every encounter reminds us to cherish the present. Come to Japan and join a spring night rendezvous, letting cherry blossoms fall among your lantern lights!

Nagoya's afternoon was just right that day. The city wasn't noisy but was filled with the sounds of life. Relaxing with an Afternoon Tea After exiting the subway station, I didn't rush to Osu Kannon Temple. Instead, I wandered into the alleys of the Osu area to find a café where I could pause and unwind. The Osu area is home to many unique coffee shops and tea houses, ranging from retro kissaten to modern cafés and dessert shops. For instance, the famous "Komparu Osu Main Store" is known for its shrimp sandwiches and iced coffee, which are so enticing that just looking at the photos can make you hungry. Other options include the pancake specialty store Gram and small hand-drip coffee shops, all of which have branches in the Osu area. I chose a small café with window seats, ordered a hot coffee and a dessert. The thin cup walls allowed me to feel the warmth with my palm. Outside the window, pedestrians, bicycles, and travelers with suitcases passed by. The city was in motion, but at that moment, I felt like I was momentarily removed from the flow of time. Travel doesn't always require grand plans. A cup of tea, a piece of dessert, and a window view to daydream are enough to calm the mind. By the time I finished my coffee, my heart had transitioned from the daily grind to "traveler mode." From the Shopping Street to the Red Main Hall of Osu Kannon Temple Leaving the café, I followed the road and soon felt the unique atmosphere of the Osu area: long arcade shopping streets, sky-high signs, vintage stores, electronics shops, cosplay costume stores, second-hand CDs, models, and anime merchandise. It's like Akihabara, Harajuku, and a flea market all rolled into one street. This area boasts over 1,200 shops and is one of the stages for the World Cosplay Summit, making it a representative hub of Nagoya's "subculture." At one end of the shopping street lies today's destination—Osu Kannon Temple. Looking up, the bright red main hall stands against the sky, with stairs extending upward and white flags fluttering on both sides. In the front plaza, pigeons occasionally gather to forage. This temple, officially named "Kitanozan Shinpukuji Hōshōin," belongs to the Shingon sect Chizan school. Originally located in Gifu Prefecture, it was relocated to its current site during the early Edo period by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu due to frequent flooding. It is considered one of Japan's three great Kannon temples, alongside Asakusa Kannon and Tsu Kannon. Finding Peace Amid Incense and Red Pillars Before climbing the stairs, I paused at the plaza to take in the atmosphere—a mix of incense, wood, pigeons flapping their wings, and distant street music. The stairs aren't very high, but each step upward felt different from the leisurely vibe of the café earlier. In front of the main hall, many people queued to toss coins into the offering box, clasp their hands in prayer, or light incense, letting the smoke waft over their hands and foreheads to leave behind bad luck and bring back good fortune. Here, no one rushes you to take photos or move on to the next spot. You can simply stand still, watching sunlight filter through the eaves, casting light on the red pillars and the shoulders of the crowd. If you have time, you can also draw an omikuji (fortune slip) or buy a small omamori (charm) to hang on your bag. Even if you can't read Japanese, folding the fortune slip and tucking it into your wallet or tying it at the designated spot in the temple adds a ritualistic touch to your journey. Just Beyond the Temple: The Bustling Osu Shopping Street Descending the stairs and looking back at the expanse of red buildings, you'll find that just a few steps forward, the scene shifts from "solemn" to "lively." The Osu Shopping Street is right next to the temple, with a long arcade filled with various small shops: · Stalls selling fried chicken, takoyaki, crepes, and dango, perfect for eating while walking. · Second-hand clothing stores, kimono shops, and vintage stores, ideal for treasure hunting. · Game, model, and card shops, as well as anime merchandise stores, where ACG fans might lose track of time. · Small cafés, dessert shops, and kissaten for another round of drinks. This area is both a local shopping district and a stage for youth subculture, making it a great place to "wander aimlessly." As a traveler, one of the happiest things is having no specific destination and letting the streets guide you. How to Get There? If you're coming from Nagoya Station or Sakae Station, here are some simple ways to reach the Osu Kannon Temple/Osu Shopping Street area: · Subway Tsurumai Line "Osu Kannon" Station (T08): Exit from Exit 2, and you'll see Osu Kannon Temple after about a 3-minute walk. · Subway Tsurumai Line/Meijo Line "Kamimaezu" Station (T09/M03): From here, you can quickly enter the Osu Shopping Street, making it suitable for those who want to shop first and then visit the temple or vice versa. The Osu Kannon Temple grounds are open for free year-round, essentially all day (though facilities like the library have different opening hours, so check official information if you plan to visit them). Travel Tips and Practical Advice 1. Suggested Itinerary (Half-Day to Full-Day Leisurely Walk) Recommended Order: Café → Osu Kannon Temple → Osu Shopping Street · Arrive in the Osu area around 1 PM. · Find a café or kissaten that catches your eye for a light meal, dessert, or afternoon tea. · Around 2-3 PM, head to Osu Kannon Temple, taking your time to explore the plaza, stairs, and main hall. · After visiting, walk around the temple, draw a fortune slip, or buy a charm. · Then dive into the Osu Shopping Street, eating, shopping, and taking photos along the way. · By early evening, depending on your energy and mood, choose to: · Stay in Osu for dinner. · Return to the subway station and head to Sakae or Nagoya Station for nightlife. 2. How to Choose an Afternoon Tea Spot? · For a "classic Nagoya taste": Try old-school kissaten like "Komparu Osu Main Store," where shrimp sandwiches and coffee are highly recommended by locals. · For a "sweet and Instagrammable" vibe: Consider pancake, soufflé, or cake cafés like Gram, which serve photogenic dishes. · For a "quiet retreat": The alleys of Osu have many small, quiet cafés. Search "カフェ 大須" on maps and pick the one whose photos appeal to you. 3. Best Time to Visit? · Afternoon to early evening is ideal: · The temple has good lighting for photos during the day. · Most shops in the shopping street are open, offering plenty of food and drink options. · In autumn and winter, evenings can be chilly, but the streetlights create a charming atmosphere. · On the 18th and 28th of each month, the temple hosts antique markets and stalls, perfect for treasure hunting or enjoying vintage items. 4. Small Reminders · Osu Kannon Temple is a place of worship, so be mindful not to be too noisy when taking photos and avoid pointing your camera too close to people praying. · While the shopping street offers many eat-on-the-go options, be considerate of others and avoid spilling food while walking. · Winter temperatures can be low, especially if you stop to take photos on the stairs or plaza. Remember to bring gloves, a scarf, and hand warmers.
