The Temple of Zeus in Athens has 104 Corinthian columns, with ornate capitals, exceptionally solemn and magnificent. I have never been to Athens, but just from this architectural style, I can imagine its immense grandeur. Although the exchange was designed by Japanese architects, it incorporates many features of contemporary architecture. As the largest exchange in Asia at the time, one can imagine the bustling crowds back then. When a building integrates the changes of history, it gains stories and breathes life, much like human existence, with both prosperity and decline coexisting. I walked into this building alone, feeling a kind of fear—not from ghosts or monsters, but suffocated by the vast emptiness. Music played in the hall; I could feel the flutter of skirts and see the faint streetlights in the dark night. Against the backdrop of surrounding buildings, this structure was once a beacon for wanderers. Stained glass always carries religious undertones, and the European architectural style made me feel both close to the divine and detached from the origin of my life. Like an orphan wandering. Unlike the dim and oppressive atmosphere inside, the view from the top floor intoxicated me. On one side, a railway track stretched beneath my eyes; on the other, a corner of the cityscape was fully visible. The sight of pigeons taking flight was beautiful—they would fly onto you searching for food and rest in the tower’s corners basking in the sunlight. I encountered this building in late autumn, and since then, I have been deeply captivated by spring!

I originally thought summer was the true face of southern Italy until I took a trip there in winter. The route is: Rome → Palermo → Agrigento → Palermo → Catania → Syracuse → Catania → Taormina → Catania → Rome My friend and I, two girls, flew from Rome to Palermo and stayed at a guesthouse near Quattro Canti, which is also close to the pedestrian street, very convenient. Each room was 100 euros per day, with air conditioning and a hot spring spa (in peak season it’s about 280 euros per day). However, I don’t recommend it because the rooms are really damp! As someone from the north, I just couldn’t handle it... Quattro Canti and Teatro Massimo are on the same street and can be visited together. It’s nice for casual photos, buying souvenirs, and there are plenty of food options. Except for hot pot, you can basically find anything. We stayed in Palermo for a total of 4 days, and on the third day, we went to Agrigento. It was a day trip; the train takes about 2 hours one way and costs 11.4 euros. It’s best to get off at Agrigento Centrale station, which is about 2 kilometers from the entrance to the Valley of the Temples. It’s about a 30-minute walk or a 15-euro taxi ride. We got up at 10 a.m., got ready, took the bus to the park entrance, and it was almost 4 p.m. by then... but luckily we caught the most beautiful sunset! (After dark, the park has lights, but photos of people don’t look good, while photos of the buildings are quite nice. The park closes at 7 p.m. in winter.) Photos 1-8 are of the Valley of the Temples; photo 9 is of the coastal train from Palermo to Agrigento 🚄. After taking photos, we rushed back to the train station just in time for the 6:05 p.m. train back to Palermo. (⚠️ There is no bar, no McDonald’s, and no place to buy food inside Agrigento’s train station! We left early in the morning without eating and didn’t eat all day, which was a big mistake...) We rested in Palermo the next day and only left for Catania in the evening. In Catania, we stayed at the Plaza Hotel Catania. My friend and I shared a room for 135 euros a night, with a sea view, breakfast, and parking. Driving from Palermo to Catania took about 2 hours and 40 minutes. The hotel parking lot costs 10 euros per day. (Even the mini bar’s bottled water was charged! Bad review!) The breakfast environment on the rooftop was really unbeatable, though the food was just okay, as I’m not used to Western food... The next day, we drove to Syracuse. The drive took about an hour, was easy, with highways and no tolls. Unexpectedly, it turned out to be my favorite photo spot! It’s truly a hidden gem! There’s a movie-famous square, clear jelly-like sea, a charming old town with cute shops, and a large parking lot at the old town entrance! Parking costs 1.5 euros per hour, which is very cheap (compared to Taormina’s 5-6 euros per hour). The parking lot address is: Riva Sauro, 1, 96100 Siracusa SR.
