Ascot House

This 200-year-old house is charmingly British, both inside and out, offering a cozy and comfortable stay. The typical English breakfast is delightful, and the bedding is superb – even better than a five-star hotel! Just a short walk away, you'll find a park and a supermarket, perfect for experiencing local life.

The facilities are a bit old, and it was a little warm without air conditioning.

The hotel is located in a separate building. When I visited, there was construction work underway on the exterior walls, with scaffolding in place, but there was no noise or smell, so it wasn't a problem. The overall style of the building is "old-money." An elderly lady, who looked to be in her eighties or nineties, answered the door; the house belonged to her, and she had been running this family-run guesthouse for 35 years. The rooms weren't large, but that's typical for British rooms. Although a little old, the furniture was of high quality and craftsmanship. The breakfast was quite good, a typical English breakfast, with hot dishes made to order. It's about a 15-minute walk to York's Old Town. While not the closest hotel to the Old Town compared to those in the city, there are some supermarkets and convenience stores nearby, making it quite convenient.

Nestled in a quiet residential area, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the area exudes a vibrant sense of life. Neatly arranged English-style cottages line the streets, dotted with blooming flowers. Strolling through the streets feels like stepping into a tranquil pastoral landscape. At check-in, I was greeted by my 80-year-old landlady, a warm smile and a warm, welcoming gaze. While I was checking in, she meticulously introduced me to nearby attractions in York, from the magnificent York Minster to the historic Butcher Street. She also provided helpful tips on public transportation and photo opportunities. Listening to her tales, I was excited for the upcoming trip. The room was even more striking, warmly and elegantly decorated, with every detail showcasing thoughtful attention. What surprised me most was the soft bed. Lying on it felt like sinking into a cloud, and the fatigue of a busy day instantly melted away. There were also exquisite snacks and fragrant coffee by the bed. Coming back to the room after a long day, I could enjoy a snack and a sip of coffee, and I felt so happy! The breakfast was absolutely amazing! Unlike the buffet style of other hotels, this one is made to order, with a dazzling variety of options. The classic English breakfast was exquisite and delicious. The ingredients were fresh, the food was cooked with care, and the taste was excellent, providing enough energy to start the day full of energy. This stay was fantastic! The Ascot Hotel was more than just a place to stay; it made me feel at home and welcomed the local hospitality. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting York!

The exterior was under renovation when I checked in, but it didn't significantly impact the experience. It feels like a decaying aristocratic mansion. The decor is beautiful, but there's no elevator, so you have to carry your luggage up a narrow staircase to the top floor (the third floor). Other than that, the hotel is excellent. There's private backyard parking, a generous breakfast, and a friendly and welcoming Chinese lady who takes your orders. There are laundry facilities available, and a quiet common study room on the first floor. A truly wonderful stay!

Our family of four stayed here for two nights. The landlady, a grandmother in her 80s, was still elegant and served everyone. We had a very comfortable stay and loved the decor! The breakfast is rich and delicious. Some food is self-service and people will come to order. The transportation is convenient. York is not big. It is close to the train station and various attractions, and can be reached on foot. Highly recommended to stay!
