Wotton-under-Edge|2.98km from downtown
Beautiful building in stunning grounds with a very stately home appearance. Staff were friendly and helpful, we stayed in a suite which was very luxurious but somewhat confusingly does not have a room number but the name of a poet, however when we were handed the keys the receptionist only mentioned the room number…several minutes later after wandering around in circles looking for the rooms marked as the location for 22-27 we discovered that the e-key wallet had the name Kipling as well as 26…that made it a bit easier. We eat at the restaurant the first evening and the bistro the second evening, food was very good and service quick and attentive at both locations, however the lighting at both was a bit too romantic for my eyes and i struggled to read the menu in the “atmospheric” lighting particularly in the Atrium Bistro. One of the reasons we booked was because of the EV Charging facility and although not a fault of the hotel it was very annoying to see vehicles parked at this location who either could not use the Tesla chargers (other manufacturers EV’s) or had parked at these location with 3 pin plug connections draped out of windows and taking up several spaces. I did actually manage to get a charge the two nights we were there but people should be a bit more thoughtful when using these facilities and park elsewhere once charged or if they cannot charge. The management seemed to shrug their shoulders at this when I complained. The room was of a good size and fittings were excellent along with the en-suite, The windows rattled a bit at night but you have to expect this at this type of building, very comfortable bed which was very large . A good location for touring the area with Gloucester Cathedral, Wotton on the edge, Westonbirt Arboretum all within a short drive.

Best Western Gables Hotel

Wotton-under-Edge|4.09km from downtown
Chose to stay a night in the Gables hotel on route home from exploring Bristol for the day as the price was relatively cheap compared to other options on a Saturday night. Was not really expecting too much as it was just a place to relax and sleep but other reviews were quite good. I think the first thing to point out is that the hotel is a tale of two room types. The first being Granny’s spare bedroom versus boutique chic. When we entered our given room my husbands first words were “well where are you sleeping..?” The bed looked like a big single bed. No bathroom light. We were then given another room which was much bigger but it’s window had a view into the hotels reception entrance so curtains had to be closed for privacy. The room had an adjoining door. After being able to hear everything the guest next door was saying we felt uncomfortable speaking. At this point I thought I’ll just quietly do a bit of research on the internet for the next days exploring only for there to be no signal in the room at all. Decided just to watch the tv. This didn’t last long either as a disco started up for a birthday party function and I couldn’t hear it. The one good thing was the room had a bath which I enjoyed. The room could also have been cleaner in areas. The hotel does have some good points such as parking, nice newly renovated bar area and modern restaurant and I’m sure if we had been given a newly renovated room we would have had a much better experience. Looking at several booking sites it’s not entirely clear if booking an executive room you would be given one of the newer rooms or not. Breakfast is just ok. For being set in the Marco Pierre White restaurant it was a bit underwhelming. Have been in fancier Premier Inns. We had a drink in the bar and the beer didn’t taste right.

You get what you pay for. No frills just a decent night sleep. The building is dated but everything we needed. We did not spend anytime in the room other than sleeping so were not looking for anything special. We also had our baby daughter with us. The staff were very helpful before and during our visit responding very quickly to email requests. One thing to note google maps does not recognise a private road at the rear of the property. We were attending a wedding at Berkley which google maps said was 25 mins away. But there is a private road that hotel guests are allowed to access to get on the A38 ( avoiding the sat nav M5 detour) No sound of motorway in room, rear rooms have country views and totally silent.
