Mallyan Spout Hotel

We had a lovely few days away with the Mallyan as our base. The staff were superb (no names because I don't like staring at chests to read name badges!), the room was gorgeous (we had room 21) and the food delicious. I had the full breakfast on my first morning, eggs benedict on day two (slightly disappointing ham) and porridge on day three. Other than the ham they were very enjoyable breakfasts. We had dinner one one night only and that too was very good. There's a very handy bus stop right outside if you fancy a trip to Whitby. The wifi is average at the best of times, but that's the price you pay for the beautiful location.

As a family we have stayed at the hotel dozens of times over the years, more recently at least once a year. Our visit last weekend was quite disappointing in terms of service. This included; No toiletries in the room meaning we had to use our shower gel to wad our hands. We raised this with reception and thought that the items would be taken up to our room, as would be the usual remedy. Unfortunately unknown to us they were left at reception for us to collect. Dinner in the restaurant was ok, starters good and my husband enjoyed his meal. Mine not so good. I was asked if everything was ok and I told the server (with a long sleeved jumper on) that my chicken wasn’t to my liking as it seemed to have been cooked in something I didn’t like the taste of. I was asked if I would like something else, but by this time my husband had finished his main course, so I said no. We were not offered anything else. Breakfast the next morning was very slow in terms of service. I could see that the reason was that there was only two serving staff on duty. The restaurant seemed almost full to capacity. It took around 25 minutes before we were able to order our hot food. I suspect that this was not only due to the shortage of staff in the restaurant, but also in the kitchen. When the food eventually came, mine was delicious. My husband’s was missing items and some of it was cold. On checking out. We raised these issues but nothing was offered by way of an apology. I am aware that the hotel changed hands last year. I’m sorry to say that we would not return based on this experience.

Had a night away at this hotel. Staff were friendly and attentive. Room was nice and comfortable and even though we had one of the smallest rooms was ample for 2 people. Food was good but not exceptional.

Perfect, lovely hotel, the room was lovely. The evening meal was perfect, breakfast was scrumptious to much to choose spoilt for choice

I can't recommend this place enough. Staff here were the most friendly and helpful and the two rooms we stayed in were absolutely superb in all ways. If you want to escape from the rat race and relax in a warm and cosy bubble, this is the place. Can't wait for an opportunity to revisit.

I stayed the Mallyan Spout Hotel in October 2024 for my son’s wedding which took place in the hotel and decided to go back again this year for a few nights at the beginning of October. I was pleased to find that nothing had really changed and the hotel was still staffed by very friendly pleasant happy people. One new addition was Rick who works behind the bar, ideal man for the job and looked after us very well. Although it’s not possible to interact with all of the staff I like to make a point of knowing who I am dealing with, names etc. The following staff members who I personally dealt with deserve a mention, Joe, Eleanor, Jodie, Mia, Grace, Kelsey, Georgia, Meg and Helen who all contributed to another very pleasant stay. The Chefs deserve a mention as the food is excellent. If you want an outstanding wedding venue, accommodation for a night or two or just fancy a drink and something to eat the The Mallyan Spout is the place to go.
