Magoebaskloof Hotel

Tzaneen
I would have initially given a one star rating, however decided to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt. My review is based on usage of the hotel rooms, the spa facility and the Tlou restaurant. I experienced numerous issues from the get go, firstly with my check in experiences and secondly with my spa booking - which was booked as an extra for my wife's birthday( I have written a separate review of the spa under the name ”mountain spa”. I booked and paid through booking.com & confirmation was received, however when we arrived we were asked for the shortfall. After significant amount of time locating our payment & confirming our spa treatments, we were ready to get settled into our room on an extremely hot day, to our dismay we had a long walk from the car park to the room (no formal directions were provided which resulted in us wandering around the property) - with no assistance from staff or porters. My wife and I made four trips from the car to our room. As per hotel guidelines, the allotted check in time was 2pm, which we adhered to. Upon arrival to our room, the door was open, bath towels were missing and the toilet light was nonfunctional. After tracking up and down to the car we then had to call reception from our cellphones, as the phone was non functional to help us find the missing items. The room itself being aged presents its own set of challenges, I do believe the overall experience can be elevated with basic maintenance, as you can see from the pictures attached. The kettle is rusty, the tile grout has blackened due to it not being cleaned thoroughly. The room mirror rusted. The room also had a musky smell to it. The bathroom towels were also noted to be stained. On our second day at the hotel, as the weather is very unpredictable - it turned out to be very rainy and misty, hence decreasing the amount of activities one can do in the town. We popped out of the hotel around 11, and arrived back at 2:30pm to an unserviced room. This was disappointing as it was rainy and cold - perfect to jump into a freshly made bed. Instead we were required to call and ask for our room to serviced and decided to eat at Tlou restaurant. Another slight downfall especially if you visit on a rainy day - there appears to be only three TV channels and variety of these channels are very limited, with two sports channels and mnet. The overall issues experienced seem to stem from managerial/administration related. The staff of the establishment are lovely, friendly and accommodating. It appears that the issues regarding bookings and confusions thereof are due to miscommunications from senior management, and poor guidance. The hotel grounds, staff and location are excellent, hence the facility has great potential to be one of the better establishments in the area and have fantastic reviews.

A warm welcome greets you from the staff who work in every department of the extrordinary hotel. It is set in beautiful grounds, overlooking stunning scenery of the mountains. The history and how the hotel came about was facinating to learn whilst we stayed there. A totally chilled out enviorment. pool area to sit in both inside and out. Our room was comfortable but very dated. It was however nice to have a bath. There was a fridge and also amenities to make hot drinks, which were replenished daily. Our room was cleaned daily. The resturant produced food to a very high standard both at breakfast and dinner.
