Tahoe Star Hotel

We loved our stay at the Tahoe Star Hotel! We took the train and did not plan on renting a car. The location was directly across from the station and located right in the heart of Truckee. We arrived very late due to a 9 hour train delay. Emma stayed in contact with me starting the day before our trip. Although we did not anticipate the delay, Emma gave us clear directions on what to do if we arrived late. We let ourselves in, but due to it being so late didn’t get to see much. The next day we hopped on a TART bus and frolicked around town while stopping by the room a few times for sock changes as we happened to vacation after a very substantial snow fall. The hotel rooms are very modern and cute, but you still get that antique charm. There was a coffee and tea bar, a vending machine, and snacks provided in the lobby. It was very easy from booking the room to checking out. We enjoyed reading about the history of the Hotel that was provided in a directory/info booklet in the room! Overall we loved this place and is we are ever back in Truckee we know where we are staying!

Easy walking distance to historic downtown Truckee, restaurants, and hiking trails along the river. Would definitely stay here again!

My husband, myself, and another couple stayed at Tahoe Start Hotel last weekend for the first time. It was fabulous - we were greeted by the Inn Keeper, Shannon, and also met the owners David and Desiree. The main entrance and hotel rooms are all key-entry and 24/7. The rooms were well equipped - nicely remodeled, subway tiled rainforest showers, comfortable king beds, and nice linens. It's really cozy and like a fine B&B without the breakfast (they have complimentary snacks, vending machines, coffee/Keurig, tea, hot chocolate, etc.). The best part was the hotel is a 5 minute walking distance to the downtown "*****" to fine restaurants like Moody's and Bar of America, as well as numerous boutique retail shops and bars. Right across from the hotel on the corner of W. River Street is an excellent diner for breakfast. It was so much fun to wander around downtown Truckee for the day and then have dinner and catch a great band playing at Bar of America in the evening! The location is really the key, as being able to walk and not drive (or have to find a parking spot in busy downtown Truckee) was a sincere convenience and especially when letting loose with a few cocktails. Ski areas and Tahoe recreation are only a 10-15 minute drive. The hotel is flanked by the Truckee River just behind the building which offers the wonderful soothing sound of the rushing water, and railroad tracks one street away in the front - a beautiful setting year round. The history of the hotel is quite interesting, dating back to the 1700's? or 1800's? and the Shafer family who built the historic home were in the lumber business and influenced the building of the town of Truckee, CA. The development of the railroad is great history and the stories of the time are abundant and interesting. Staying at Tahoe Star Hotel is like a step back in time, and remodeled in the last couple of years to bring all the luxuries and comfort of our current times. We stayed in king bed rooms 4 and 5 on the 2nd floor and these rooms were the best! Also, the hotel was very quiet and peaceful, despite being fully booked - the only sounds are the river flowing (if you have you window open you can hear it) and the occasional train passing through town. They offer ear plugs at the front desk if you want to block out these mystical sounds. We will return again for another weekend "staycation" at Tahoe Star Hotel!

What a charming small hotel right in historic Old Town Truckee. We rode the train from Davis and the hotel is very close to the station and wonderful restaurants and shops. We had adjoining rooms, 8A and B which meant a bed for each adult. The beds were extremely comfortable. The owners are very kind and attentive. They did a marvelous job renovating this historic structure.

We had issues figuring out the heater and the bed was a little too firm, so unfortunately, we didn’t get great sleep while we were visiting. But the staff was very nice and the place was clean and well kept.

Great hotel in downtown Truckee Fantastic location, within walking distance of everything downtown. Decent sized and clean room with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom is also nice, though the soap for the sink was very watery. Convenient parking behind the hotel. Free snacks available all day. The train runs through downtown and blows its horn even at night. To counter that, there are white noise machines in the rooms and the office offers free earplugs.

Super cute historic hotel!! I believe the owner checked me in, Desiree, and she was very kind and made sure I was comfortable and shown the hotel before showing me my room. Unfortunately they did not have air conditioning, but Desiree made sure I had fans in the room and let me know I could open the windows at night.
