Red Roof Inn Chapel Hill - Unc

We booked a last minute trip to Chapel Hill for a local event on 11/13/21, and the booking process was pleasant and reassuring. The reality of the facility was anything BUT those qualities. The entire building and grounds are run down and generally uncared for - loose garbage, cigarette butts, and sticky pools of dark liquid in all the stairwells and walkways. Our room, 201, was clearly labeled as Non-Smoking but as soon as we entered ... the smell of stale cigarettes and mildew was overpowering. It was so bad I'd describe it by saying you could taste the smell through your skin! Nasty. We tried to make a go of it, but by 10:30 that night it was unbearable / unbreathable ... and we checked out. The night manager was very apologetic, and when we told him we were in 201 he literally said, he would ”never put anyone in 201” ... I personally doubt any other rooms were better based on the overall appearance of the hotel. The night manager also said he was not authorized to give us a partial refund but to call back the next day and speak to the manager, ”Nick”. We did call the next day and were told ”Nick” was not available, but should be back in a day or two, and the person I was speaking to could not help me. He took a message he said he would make sure ”Nick” received.... we never got a call back. We won't waste our money or time here again, and recommend you don't as well. *And I have to wonder if the high star ratings here are from paid responders. I cannot imagine this property being higher than a 2, even if you did luck into a clean-ish room.

I found the front desk staff to be cheerful and helpful. The rooms are comfortable but no frills. They are a pet friendly hotel, which I think is great, but wasn't traveling with my dog. You might request to be assigned a room away from the animal population if you would prefer. The breakfast is extensive but only adequate in flavor; still it does come with the price of the room. I liked mostly that it was located in the area of Durham I wanted to be in when there wasn't a lot of other hotels right around.

The room was great, kept clean and nice conveniences. Perfect for a family of 4, 2 queen beds, a divider curtain for a small LR area with a kitchenette and a table that can double as workspace or dining. There were 2 issues I had, in unoccupied rooms alarms were going off at all hours (4:35, 5:30 & 6:30am) - when guests check-out Housekeeping should be checking and turning off alarms. The other issue was at the Front Desk. When we arrived, we stood at the Front Desk for about 5 minutes, I ended up doing self-check-in on the app and as I completed that the Agent arrived. Possibly in the bathroom, but if you are the only one working, put a sign “Be right back”. We went down to the lobby a few times and never saw anyone at the front desk, including at checkout, it actually made me question how safe the place is. Also, the breakfast was just ok, not typical Hilton standards and staff putting it out were not welcoming. Perhaps that’s why it was a decent rate, sometimes you get what you pay for.

Arrived late to hotel at 1230 AM with reservation. Ran into a situation never before encountered anytime in my travel experiences. The front door was locked, and no desk clerk could be seen at the front desk from my sideways view. Knocking and knocking, while standing outside in the 30 degree weather- no answer ! After five minutes, started looking around. Way off the the side mounted on the exterior wall was a gray plastic call box. It actually looked like an emergency call box. Above the box was a non prominent sign stating “After hours call for check in”. Pressed zero, andwas connected with the national reservation center somewhere in India. The rep stated; “Yes sir, we will contact someone there”. After a few minutes, a desk clerk in a plain tee shirt leaned out from behind the counter. She probably was there in the back the whole time and ignoring me. I held up my reservation sheet, and she just looked at me. Never waved me in or anything. Never heard the door buzz or click. Spoke again with the same rep, and he stated, yes sir, she will let you in. Finally, she waves me in. Never really made an effort to try and see why I am standing outside for 10 mins in the 30 degree weather. Well now the fun begins. It took about 20 minutes for her to process me in. All my info was in the computer. All she needed was a credit card for incidentals and issue me a key. I After 15 minutes, I exclaimed what in God's name is taking so long? She stated, “oh, the company internet is slow”. Absolutely maddening. Room was ok – typical 2 star room. No hair dryer. Note on desk stating room only will be cleaned once a week. If linens or soap desired, etc, see front desk. TV selection very good, and wifi speed satisfactory. Came down to the front desk in the AM for a coffee maker, and viola. Waited 15 mins for a desk clerk to show up. Desk clerk AWOL yet again. Nothing around the hotel. A gas station and a Hardees. Whoopee! Oh – one more thing, As a final act of this hotel's unending aggravation , tonight the desk clerk ignores calls to desk. Very endearing. Have a joyous stay !

Look at the evaluation is not good, psychological expectations are not high. Check-in was good, although the facilities were outdated, the room was cleaned (checked carefully). However, it does not affect travel for a one-night connecting flight. There is a kitchenette where you can borrow cooking utensils at the front desk. There is a free shuttle bus to the airport. The driver is very nice and expects a tip if you provide good service. So it is better to have some cash change in your pocket. Breakfast is just some snacks and coffee tea, the snacks are too sweet.
