Previously had many happy stays at HOP when under past management. We had booked a 3 day gourmet break costing £1,140.00. On this occasion we stayed for just over an hour and left. We had booked into "best" room. We could not open balcony door. We both had to shoulder it. An outside light had fallen off the wall exposing wires. Water had leaked in through bi-fold doors lifting floor boards. We reported these faults to reception and a member of staff agreed with the problems. We waited an hour in reception hallway to see if another room was available. I then noticed that water had leaked through hall ceiling causing staining and wallpaper to peel. We decided to leave and I was told I had to pay the full price by the receptionist. The manager/owner Jeremy Michael Vincent was called. When I complained about the state of the room he said he was in it the day before and it was absolutely fine. He was very arrogant and far from gracious. Eventually, I offered to pay for one night, which was the offer I had previously made to the receptionist. However, eventually I paid £562.50 for a one hour stay. When we left and were in the car park, we were approached by two different guests who had heard of my complaints in reception. One had complained about the bed and was unable to sleep. The other, who like us had stayed before the new management, said they would certainly not go back which was a shame as they had always enjoyed their stay before the new management.

We booked the 2-night stay, which included a dinner, tasting menu, breakfasts. We were very impressed at how the restaurant adapted their menus for one of our party with dietary intolerances - despite them having no prior notice. The bar and reception staff were very professional, friendly and very attentive - with special mention for the lovely Sara in the restaurant who added to our whole dining experience, ensuring we had fun while enjoying food and wine of exceptional quality. The hotel is set in a nice, quiet location with great views; and the room was spacious and extremely comfortable.

An excellent country hotel close to Dartmore National Park and not far from Plymouth. Our room had everything you would need. It was warm, Good WiFi, coffee/tea facilites, bath with a shower and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was 0830-1000 with waitress served and a wide choice of delicious cooked food available. Efficent and friendly staff. Highly recommened.

Afternoon tea Very disappointed. We were expecting a special afternoon. Service was bad. We had to put our coats on our chairs. Unable to tell us what we were to be having. Table was not dressed as website picture. Table was too small for 3 people, the cake stand, teapot, cups, saucers and plates. I sent an email regarding this disappointing visit, but didn’t get a response.

We stayed here some years ago but it has now changed hands. It is a comfortable hotel with lovely lounges and open fires and stunning views across the Tamar Valley from the dining room. Staff are very pleasant and welcoming and everywhere is spotless. Bedrooms are very attractive and a good bathroom. The dining room has been modernised and instead of the tables having white tablecloths they have been replaced by wooden tables placed all in a line. There were fresh flowers on the tables and candles. The walls are painted in pale grey with dark grey blinds at the windows. It just looks out of place in an old property and in our opinion it lacked atmosphere. We were rather disappointed with some of the food too and while we have eaten in many fine dining establishments in the UK and abroad this just wasn't to our taste at all. There were only 3 starters, mains and desserts, I had informed the staff when booking that I had dietary requirements and the receptionist confirmed them when we checked in. When it came to desserts I was told that they were unaware that I was lactose intolerant so I ended up on both nights with a tart that had been bought in for vegetarians. On the last night, most of the items on the menu were unsuitable as they contained gluten and/or lactose. I didn't feel that much consideration had been given to providing my dietary requirements even though they had been informed in good time. we would like to go again as it's such a beautiful place but were rather put off by the menu.

Our second stay and did not disappoint. They can't control the weather! This is a super small hotel. Food very good but.....the staff are fantastic, they make it so homely and actually care about you. Great sitting room...etc etc can't wait to return Wish I didn't live a 5 hrs drive away. Btw if you book the best rooms in main house, room 4 has tricky steps. So ask for room 3 if thats an issue. Management aware.

This is a super hotel in a wonderful location not far from Tavistock. As with all very good hotels, there is exceptional attention to detail. The rooms are very well appointed. Ours had great views over the valley. With large grounds there is plenty to explore. We had dinner and really enjoyed the meal. The dinner, bed and breakfast deal is particularly good value. We had our dogs with us and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy their stay. It probably had something to do with the breakfast sausage that they were given! Special place to stay at if you are in this part of the world.
