Maravu Taveuni Lodge

Taveuni Island
After a brief mis-understanding about pool towels, our stay here got better and better every day! Such a lovely property, on a fair steep hillside across the main road from the ocean. Such a beautiful view of the reef! Our Garden view Bure had a great view of the lovely maintained ,park like, front property and the sea. The bure itself was older, but very comfortable, with a small fridge, great king bed, a.c., fan, kettle, tea ,coffee etc., outdoor shower, and a great front porch for ”happy hour”.It had a real Fiji vibe, which is what we were after. The pool on property was still open while decking was being replaced around the perimeter, and was nice. It appeared dirty, but that was just because the bottom was not painted blue ,like most pools. It was also quite deep, at over 6 feet! The restaurant on site, ”Divas Delight”, is run separately from the accommodations, and is excellent! Dinners were limited to 2 or 3 entrees every day, but man, everything was great! The best food we had in Fiji! Location of the resort is very good, only a 10 minute walk up the hill to the airport, add another 5 minutes, and you get to a couple of different stores/gas stations, where you can buy snacks, food, and cheaper cold beers. The one closest to the airport has the coldest beer we found in Fiji, at only 6FJD for a 750 ml bottle. It's great to find a cold beer for a reasonable price, as anyone who has been to Fiji can probably tell you, alcoholic beverages here are darn expensive! You can catch the rare buses on the main road right in front, and they are very cheap, and quite interesting! The resort offers various local tour opportunities, we took the local buses to a couple sites on our own, and saved lots. No regrets . If you are coming or going from Vanua Levu on any of the now 3 different ferries, it is only a 20 minute drive from the newish Gov't pier . I really miss the evening Kava sing alongs at the Maravu! The staff members who do it every night 7pm til? are the greatest! Other places you are lucky to get a tiny cup of Kava a week, but ”Zack” was generous of his time/entertainment, and Kava! And it was not ”weak” like at other places we stayed. Staff of the resort are mostly related, and all really great! In hindsight, I am really missing our time here.

Garden Island Resort was a lovely place to stay while in Taveuni. It was clean, the staff were helpful & friendly (special mention to Angela and Teresa) and the rooms were quite nice. I got the warm and happy Bula from all staff and it was a very relaxing stay. The resort has a lovely pool with lounge chairs, hammocks etc, its own massage Bure & each room has a balcony. The rooms have no tv or wifi (only in the restaurant) and it’s sketchy at best, but I’m yet to find anywhere with good wifi in Fiji. There is a fan and air con in the room although even set at 16° it wasn’t cold and the room was quite stuffy. There are also doors connecting the neighbouring room which meant I heard all the banging, doors closing, phones ringing etc which occasionally woke me up, especially of a morning. The air con and fan kept switching off on my last night there. The staff tried to fix it straight away but when they couldn’t they moved me to a new room next door within the hour. Silver lining, the air con worked much better and there was no adjoining door which meant it was super quiet. I wanted to dive while here, but when I went to see the dive operator at the resort I honestly felt like I was a bit of a hassle being a somewhat inexperienced diver who hadn’t dived for a few years because of covid. The lady there wasn’t forthcoming with information - I had to pry it out of her - and when I’m a solo traveller with only 30 or so dives under my belt I wanted to be assured of everything including my safety. Another slight annoyance was the food as it was just ‘ok’ and they cost around 40FJD, which I thought was expensive for the quality I was getting, although the portions were a good amount. My meal on the last night was good though. There is nowhere really else to eat nearby (there’s a corner shop for snacks) so with set meals at set times I found this difficult. I had this at Beachcomber Is as well though so maybe set meals at set times is a Fijian thing?! On my last day I saw people had pizzas and asked about it. They said they had an all day menu and apologised for not telling me about it. This probably would’ve made all the difference. The pizzas were also much cheaper at around 10FJD. The staff catered for my food allergy which was great, but make sure you tell each person at each meal time. They also have free water refills at the bar to save you buying bottled water everyday. Breakfasts were much nicer than the other meals, which I was told on arrival were free. They gave me a bill for it at the end. There is fruit, muffins, juice and coffee available for free though so perhaps this is what they meant but it was not made clear. As a school teacher I asked one of the ladies to take me to a local school where I was able to see how the schooling system is and I gave them some free school supplies. This was a big highlight, a huge thank you to Angela and Josephine for taking me. On my last day, as my flight was later in the day they offered a late check out at

Taveuni Island
We stayed at TIR for just over a week, early Jan24 and it was a magical experience. The local staff were so welcoming & friendly. The grounds are immaculate tropical gardens very well maintained on the cliff top with awesome views. We were particularly lucky to be looked after by the ‘June’s’ in the Matalau Bure where all our meals were provided. Both Chef June & our host June were just amazing. June’s cooking was outstanding using locally grown produce, cooked fresh daily. We miss her warm fresh morning muffins. We caught a Yellow Fin Tuna and she made several delicious dinners with it, including Sashimi. Each meal was 3 courses and we had to reduce lunch to 1 course as we were eating too much. No request was too difficult and her understanding of our dietary requirements was very much appreciated. Our hosts June & Raymond (for a few days) were wonderful. Always ensuring we had everything we needed and happy to enjoy a laugh with us. The rooms were always kept clean and they were serviced daily including turn down every night to turn the air con on to ensure a comfy sleep. Matalau also included a private beach which we used daily for snorkelling & swimming. Lots of coral and fish only a few metres off the shore. It was special to meet the owners Do & Ric (& all the puppies & birds). They take great pride in their piece of paradise and ensured we were being well looked after. We were very sad to leave and the staff all sang us a farewell song to wish us well.

Qamea Resort & Spa

Qamea Island
This is such a special place! My partner (who had never been to Fiji) and I (who have been there many times) agreed that Qamea Resort is our favorite holiday ever. The location on Qamea Island - 10 minutes by boat from Taveuni - is stunningly beautiful, and every accommodation has a gorgeous view of the beach, the ocean and the green mountains of Taveuni across the channel. All the excursions - the waterfall, the snorkeling and the village visit - were great. The diving offered here includes the best known sites in the area, but we went to a less well known site nearby for a ”discovery dive” since my partner is not certified, and it was amazingly beautiful! Thank you Edward! The staff is friendly, efficient and took very good care of us, The food ranged from excellent to amazing, and if we preferred to dine on our own, the meal arrived at our door. This is a place where you can really unwind, but if you still need good internet you can get it. Our room was spacious and we loved the outdoor shower (covered in case of rain), and the refrigerator, coffee maker and the hammock on the front porch. Furthermore - the management really helped us when a class 2 cyclone disrupted our plans. They made changes to flights and helped me get a refund at my next destination when it became impossible to travel there. In spite of the changes we had to make, they made the whole experience work out for the best. Thanks Ron! Qamea Resort is a wonderful blend of high end services (world class diving AND a spa with European trained masseuses) and an authentic Fijian experience. While you are here, you come to understand that you are visiting a place where ”progress” has not undercut tradition. While the local people have cell phones, they also still live off the land and sea in their traditional way. You really can have such an exotic experience and still enjoy all the comforts of a high end resort!

Garden Island Resort

The hotel is about 35 FJD from the airport and has direct dive shop service. You can arrange scuba diving, go to the sea for two dives in the morning, come back for lunch at noon, and rest in the afternoon. This hotel is perfect for diving enthusiasts. The washing supplies provided by the hotel are the local soaps that have been recommended for purchase. There are a total of eight rooms, named after the most famous eight dive sites on the Rainbow Reef of Taveuni Island. The hotel's lobby manager is also the head of the diving program Kevin (English name forgot), very nice, very patient and very attentive. The three meals a day are all eaten by the hotel. There is no food nearby. If you have a meal in advance, someone will ask you what to eat. Just go to eat directly, and check out at the store. There is a bit of something in Fiji. This is suitable for Europeans and Americans. I can't stand the stomach after eating two meals. At the end, I will directly share a share of two people. Overall, this hotel is perfect for friends who are diving. The friends who come to remember to look up at the night sky at night, there will be surprises.
