History Of Gurun; well known for its corn stalls. Rows of these stalls stand along the federal trunk road to Guar Chempedak. Gurun is also known for starting point of WAN MAT SAMAN CANAL, the longest canal in Malaysia with ~36 km that stretch out to Alor Setar where it connects Gurun River to Kedah River. The canal was constructed on 13 Aug 1885 - 12 Jul 1896, the soil dug out is used to create & formed the foundation for the federal trunk road to Alor Setar.
Until 1990s, Gurun is well known for its vegetables & corn produces; as well as iron ore mines located to the south of the own & was designated as the industrial area for heavy industry in the 1980s. Initially, PERWAJA BEAM & ROLLING Mill was set up. Then Landscape of GURUN changed and is now the home of major factories, such as NAZA, MODENAS, PERWAJE STEEL, and PETRONAS FERTILIZER.

15 mins southbound to LEMBAH BUJANG, a sprawling historical complex with an area of ~224 km² situated near Merbok, Kedah, between Gunung Jerai (north) Muda River (south), it is the richest archaeological area in Malaysia. The area consists of ruins that may date more than 2,535 years old.
GUNUNG JERAI; a mountain stands at the border of Kuala Muda and Yan districts with the height of 3,854FT. The mountain is a massive limestone outcrop & is a lone feature from the surrounding geography of the area.
YAN District is a laid-back and slow-paced town with attractions of natural waterfalls nearby.
