Location is perfect. Quiet sleep. Staff friendly. Price for money. Convenient foods at Albert Centre and Bugis Junction Mall. Easy pick up and drop off by taxis or Grab.

I like how there's a fan and aircon in the room. Switch off the aircon and on the fan, it really gives us like home vibes.

We found a place that is truly homey but in the buzzling place of the city. I recommend this for the backpackers and those who are on budget travel and who want to be accessible everything else. The hotel is near to transport which is the train and the bus stops. If you want food, Albert Center is just a stone’s throw away. As for the shopping – Bugis Center is few steps away just right up front. They have the simple amenities that you need if you are on a budget as well as a the friendly and accommodating staff. We actually came in early, but they have accommodated us to check-in earlier than the standard time. Everyday, they also make sure that our room is clean and that we have our daily coffee/tea. For me, I don’t think you can go wrong with this hotel especially if you are on a budget, would like to get a good night’s rest after a long day of walking, travelling and eating. Thanks for a homey stay South East Asia Hotel.

Pros: 1. Location - walking distance to Bugis, close to MRT and bus stations, very close to Albert Hawker 2. Accommodating staff 3. Working hot shower 4. Mostly reliable wifi Cons: 1. Old building so carpet is a bit dusty

Once you enter the room, you are hit with a very nasty and damp smell of old furniture and fungus. The carpeted floor is dark and dirty - seems like it hasn't been washed since the the 50s. The ceiling fan is hard to switch on and off. There are no mineral water, slippers, and refrigerator. The towels are thin and stained. The blankets are even thinner and the bedsheets have bed bugs all over. There is no divider for the shower so when you enter the bathroom, you instantly step on the wet tiled floors. It's uncomfortable especially if you just want to use the toilet or sink. The engineering is bad as well. The bathroom door has a handle outside but it pushes in. From the inside, there is no handle so you need to pull on the door lock instead. The TV is old and the remote doesn't work. On our first night, the bedsheets were still wet as if it wasn't laundered completely. They gave us new blankets but by the third night they stopped setting them up on our beds (they just folded them and left them on the beds). Also, by the third night at around 1AM, my brother swears he saw a ghost of an old and skinny man wearing some traditional robe at the edge of our beds. The hotel is beside a temple so we think it might be a ghost of one of the monks there. We started praying every night afterwards. The room has bad feng shui as well. There's a mirror facing the foot of the bed. We had to cover it with a towel ever since then. We are never coming back here again. It's better to spend a few more dollars to get some decent amenities, good hygiene and ghost-free accomodation.

I booked this hotel based on a recommendation from a forum I frequent. I've stayed in other hotels in Singapore before, but since we were on a budget for this trip (to 5 countries in Asia), I thought it was worth the risk. Booking itself was easy and no hassle. I emailed the hotel to book our room and they responded with all the necessary instructions and information. On the day we arrived, the taxi driver was not very familiar with the hotel. We had to direct the driver according to the directions given by the hotel, including the description of nearby temples. It's about a 30m walk from the street to the hotel entrance, no one will help you with your luggage, there's usually only one staff member at reception, and you can't see the inside from the road. We arrived at the hotel around 7:30 am and were told "Usually check in is at 2 pm but you guys are lucky we have a room ready" (yes we thanked him but the way he said it Made us feel like he was letting us stay for free). As soon as he took the room key, he asked us to pay for the first night's stay, and when we told him we needed to exchange money, he asked both of us to show our passports. He returned our passports immediately after we paid $100 for the day's stay. We were not escorted to our room and when we saw it we knew we were going to have a very disappointing stay. The room was by far the smallest I've stayed in and it reeked of stale smoke. These are the only amenities: TV with 8 channels, bed, a bedside table, a desk, cupboards with ill-fitting hooks and a ventilation rack. If the room was disappointing, the bathroom was even more so. Just the first time I've seen a shower where the shower head is right behind the door so that when you take a shower the water sprays all over the door and floor. You need to be very careful when showering as there is no bath mat or even a divider on the floor so the floor tiles get slippery - you basically use the whole cubicle when showering. We were very tired after the flight from Australia and didn't want to have a half-hostile confrontation with the receptionist, we didn't ask to change rooms as the smell would go away after a while. No chance to change rooms at all - we stayed in this room for 3 nights and the smell still lingered on our clothes a few days after leaving Singapore. (It's easy to explain why we didn't move, but we had a tight schedule, we didn't get back to the hotel until 3 or 4 in the morning, we didn't want to move everything, and we had to argue with the hotel staff to change it Room). Breakfast is served from 8:30 am to 10:30 am. There are two options: American breakfast (comprising 4 small slices from 2 whole slices of toast, a small bag of butter and a small bag of jam, plus orange juice and coffee/tea) or It was a vegetarian buffet (dim sum, noodles, fried rice and some taro puffed cakes plus coffee/tea, no juice!) We took the advice of the older Chinese woman at the front desk and opted for the vegetarian buffet. It doesn't feel like that, but it's full enough. The next day we went down to breakfast at 10:25am after a long night and the Chinese woman at the reception received us with a frown (you need to go to the reception every day to get a voucher) and berated us Can't have breakfast so late next time! Duh!!! It turned out but when we walked into the dining room it was cleared which meant they had stopped serving breakfast long before 10:30. The guy in the kitchen reluctantly served us toast and coffee, both of them muttering in Chinese the whole time. We ate our toast in a hurry to get out of here, and you know what, those guys took our plates away while we were drinking our coffee! So rude! One area to comment on is the hotel No wifi - not a big deal, just that to use the internet in the room you have to pay and hand over your passport, which is only returned when you return the modem, I'm paying for the service No complaints, it's a low cost hotel after all, but the mistrust was annoying. Others say it may be due to tradition, or it may be due to the fact that Ocean Hotel is a family run hotel, but I've stayed in other hotels in Singapore, and family run hotels in other countries, and I've never been treated like this. Needless to say we will never stay at this hotel again. The YWCA Fort Canning Inn I've stayed at was 10-20% more expensive than this one, but it's a lot better value than this one.

I would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a great hotel in Singapore. Excellent location... close to Bugis Street and Bugis Junction, great shopping area, easy to find halal food, a few minutes walk to the MRT. The room was fairly spacious, basic but comfy bed, clean bathroom, electric kettle. But don't ask too much for the view, there is no view... If you need any information, just ask the owner or anyone at the front desk, they will help you. Also: I forgot S$50 under the pillow when I checked out and they emailed me and offered to send it back for me or keep it for me until the next time I go... I'll definitely go again And, soon, thank you for your hospitality.
