I spent 4 nights in Monte Uzulu. It's up a series of steps from the small main street of San Augstinillo and my balcony had a beautiful view of the ocean and deep green trees and vegetation. The hotel and rooms are beautifully designed. Unfortunately, I was ill for much of my stay (nothing to do with this hotel stay) so I didn't get to explore as much as I would have liked, but the hotel staff (special shout out to Israel), and their on-call doctor, took very good care of me. I was able to order delicious room service dinners, and when the restaurant was closed, the hotel staff went very much out of their way finding out what I'd like, finding a restaurant open serving that food, and bringing it to me. I'd love to come back another time when I'm fully well to experience all the hotel and San Augustinillo has to offer.

The rooms are great and with wonderful sea and sunset views from your balcony. There is one luxury suite and if you can get it, then it is well worth the extra cost. Beds are comfortable, decoration is stylish and simple. It’s 5 minutes walk to the Main Street and shops, nice to be away from any potential noise. You sleep to the sound of crashing waves.

I had the most lovely stay in the hotel. The property was beautiful and very peaceful. It es perfect for relaxing and unwinding. The nearby beach was great. Breakfast was excellent. The staff was so attentive and shared great insights about the town, where to eat and what to do. I highly recommend.

This place was amazing. Small hotel with an intimate setting. Great, clean rooms with amazing balconies with fantastic views. You were up in the jungle but could hear the ocean waves from your balcony. Yummy eco-friendly products, amazing massages that the staff arrange to come to you, yoga, etc. The staff were incredibly attentive, friendly, thoughtful. The food was great--the chef really cared and created beautiful plates. What is not to love about walking to the bay, floating in a very saline ocean watching the sun rise (or set), then walking back to the hotel for an amazing breakfast or dinnerr.

Such a great experience!!!! You are in this amazing building that feels like you are in the jungle, but from your HUGE balcony with super comfy chairs, you can watch the ocean and HEAR the waves! The room was clean and had everything you needed including yummy eco-friendly products, towels to take to the beach and a bag! The staff were so welcoming, went out of their way to help you with ANYTHING, and were super helpful. They arranged an amazing massage for me, had yoga, and were just willing to do anything to help! The chef is REALLY into his food with incredibly beautiful interresting fresh plates for breakfast every day. I woke up, walked to the bay, floated in saline water, watched the sunrise and then walked back to the hotel for a cup of cafe de olla, oaxacan hot chocolate and a beautiful breakfast. Can not recommend this place enough--and kind of don't want to because I want to be able to come back!

Sadly, this was our second stay at the hotel and our 5-star review no longer stands. The hotel tricked us into eating at their new restaurant, telling us it was great when it was the worst place I’ve ever eaten in my whole life. After this I couldn’t trust them with anything, relying on our previous hotel to call us cabs, book tours, etcetera. Monte Uzulu essentially ruined a two day beach trip that was meant to be relaxing: the terrible restaurant recommendation the first night then the entire second day working towards a resolution. In the end they insulted us by offering us a free night in a smaller room even though I paid for the master suite and already had plans to leave for Oaxaca city. True they ended up giving us a refund of one night but I work hard for my vacations and having them ruined is not easy to recover from. Also: you can tell the maid you don’t want your room serviced and put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door but they will still come in and your things will be moved around. And if you value privacy this is not the place for you. One annoying guest kept blasting music for the duration of our stay on their balcony even though all rooms do not have windows, only wooden shutters. No one wants to hear your crappy Weeknd album over and over again, whoever you are. This even continued after 10pm and the hotel staff did nothing to make them stop. So yeah, unless the hotel works on their restaurant, management, and not taking for granted their paying customers I can no longer recommend. I believe we deserved a more generous resolution as returning guests but I guess repeat business is not important to them.

We had the most beautiful week at the Hotel Monte Uzulu. The hotel itself is beautifully designed, simple, with views from stairways and rooms/patios. I saw hawks and streaked orioles just outside our terrace, with a view of the sea. The rooms were clean and beautiful. Ours had a high thatched ceiling; our daughters room had a skylight in her bathroom that brought in tons of natural light. The plants are beautifully maintained, the grounds are wild-looking, but very much intentional. Julio Alberto Mata was our server in the dining area -- he was so attentive and lovely -- and Jesus the chef is an absolutely ARTIST. Every dish that emerged was perfection. Israel and Ricardo --- and everyone who works there -- was lovely and attentive. My husband was sick for one day and they would bring him electrolyte water. The hotel, however, is not for everyone. It takes a guest who appreciates design and nature -- the open air walls, the hike up to the rooms. We loved it, but it might be too much of a climb for some. For anyone struggling with balance, anyone elderly, it might be a challenge with lots of steps and no handrails. Again, we loved it and had no problem, but thought I should mention.
