Prince's Gate Hotel

I really loved this hotel; it has a charming, historic feel to it. It's not just 'old,' but rather a place where you can enjoy the antique architecture and atmosphere itself. The design, where you climb an outdoor staircase and enter the room from the balcony side, was interesting, making it feel like a private villa. Upon entering the room, I noticed the distinct sulfur smell characteristic of a hot spring resort. I think this unique hot spring atmosphere would be very appealing to those who appreciate it. The hot springs were also wonderful. The water flows from top to middle to bottom, changing temperature along the way, so it's interesting that you can choose the perfect spot for yourself depending on the day's conditions. Since it was early and drizzling, I had the springs almost entirely to myself and could relax thoroughly. The pool's location was a bit tricky to find, but when I asked at the front desk, they kindly lent me a key to a private room, which I could use as a changing room, which was very helpful. The staff's service was also friendly. The breakfast was delicious, and I enjoyed it at a leisurely pace. The room also had plenty of power outlets, making it convenient for long stays or for those who need to work or study. The restaurant prices didn't feel particularly high, considering the cost of living in NZ and its status as a tourist destination. While it's not a five-star hotel, I think it's quite reasonable to enjoy a historic building, hot springs, delicious breakfast, and ample facilities at this price point. I would recommend this hotel more to those who appreciate the charm of a historic building and the unique atmosphere of a hot spring resort, rather than those seeking a modern and new hotel.

A hotel that looks much better in photos than in reality. Very old, but not in a charming way. It has beautiful common areas with old-world charm, but the room leaves a lot to be desired. It's small, old, and has a door that you could probably open if you tripped and fell into it. The room opens directly onto the street, which feels a bit insecure (even if the city is safe) because the latch and door are very flimsy. I expected more from this place.

Stayed in a two-bedroom apartment suite next to the hotel. The living room was a bit small, and the shower in the bathroom was rather cramped, but it fit the boutique hotel style and had all the basic necessities. The heating was very good in winter, though only in the living room. Overall, it was okay. It's about a 7-8 minute walk from the hot springs and just across the street from the municipal park, which was quite convenient.

Good service, but the rooms are a bit old. Plenty of restaurants nearby.

Charming and quaint, but unfortunately, there's no elevator, so carrying heavy luggage up the stairs was quite a struggle. The breakfast was plentiful with a wide variety of options, and the quality was good. It also catered well to vegetarians.

The room was very spacious and clean. I was delighted with the complimentary upgrade. The onsen pool was also a nice touch. As for amenities, the kitchen was very convenient to use. It would have been perfect if there was a washer/dryer.
