Plaza Grande Hotel

Quito
We spent two days in Quito following our Galapagos cruise and booked this very expensive hotel as a splurge to end our vacation. On the plus side, it is very beautifully decorated, our room was quite large and there were lots of fluffy towels and nice toiletries. We received a bottle of wine and some chocolate when we checked in, and the people at the front desk were very nice. But the negatives certainly overshadowed the positives, considering how much we paid for the room. The air conditioner was barely adequate, although we turned it down as low as possible, so we spent two uncomfortable nights. One of the main reasons for booking the hotel was to eat in their lovely restaurant, We even thought we made a reservation for our first night. However. when we checked in , we discovered that the restaurant had been closed for months and the only available restaurant was little better than a coffee shop, although they did serve dinners. The breakfast that was included in the room rate was very limited, with most of the other offerings an additional cost. Even at more modest hotels, we have enjoyed very nice buffets with many choices, but not at this hotel. And finally, our trip ended on a very negative note. The hotel is on a pedestrian street so we, with all of our luggage, walked to the corner with the bellman to meet our car. He didn't have a cart so we carried everything. While we were standing there someone took one of our bags, unfortunately the one with the presents we were bringing home to our family. The hotel never bothered to get in touch with me afterwards, although I guess technically it was not entirely their fault, even though they walk guests to the corner on a regular basis. But an expression of regret would have been appropriate and much appreciated. I really intended to give the hotel a “poor” rating, but decided in the end for “average” but only because the people at the front desk were so pleasant. But we would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

Hilton Colon Quito

Quito
First of all, the Hilton Colon - like most Hiltons outside the U.S. - is far superior to equivalent Hilton properties in the States. Relatively clean rooms (no stray hairs anywhere!), comfortable bed, great shower water pressure, clean towels, nice and cozy executive lounge, etc. The room, and the property in general, is dated but things mostly work as they should. In the Southwest facing ”executive” king room, and in the executive lounge, the views of the city are spectacular. Unfortunately, the ”free” breakfast buffet is slop, with the most atrocious coffee in Quito. The exception is the made-to-order egg station and the nice gentleman who expertly cooks them. Bring your own coffee from one of the countless cafes nearby and then order just the eggs and some toast. Or, better yet, get an authentic Ecuadorian breakfast elsewhere for just a few dollars. There was extensive road construction going on during my stay on Avenida Patria, which is the main road adjacent to the South side of the property. Very loud during the day, and bright spot-lights aimed at the hotel were left on during the night for some perplexing reason. Not the hotel's fault, of course - just something to be aware of if planning to stay here in the near future. Lastly, the front desk receptionists at this hotel reminded me of the female customs agents at Quito airport. Not friendly for sure, and rather stern. On the other hand, many other staff members, housekeeping in particular, were kind and helpful. Would I stay here again? I think so, once the road construction is completed.

La Casona de la Ronda Hotel Boutique & Luxury Apartments

Quito
We had two short stays here over Christmas in December 2023. We stayed as a family of two adults and a child. When our car pulled up outside, staff from the hotel were staight out to help with our bags. Inside we found the charming old world feel of the hotel. We knew there were no lifts so we needed to walk up the stairs, which was fine, and the staff carried our bags to our room. We stayed in different rooms on our stays, and each had huge beds, USB ports, and a good, spacious bathroom. There was an internal window to the quirkyly decorated centre of the hotel. Breakfast was good with varied fruits, pastries, yoghurts and other options, with friendly help at the omlette bar. We also ate dinner in the restuarant on Christmas Day, when a special menu was served. There were a few areas to sit and relax in the hotel including one where coffee was available on a ”help yourself” basis in the afternoon and evening. The centre of the hotel is both old and charming. There was a security guard on the premises all the time, and we never felt any security issue. When we were heading to a restuarant in the evening, we were offered the security guard as an escort, but that wasn't needed. The hotel allowed us to store luggage with them for a few days between our stays there. Everyone was helpful and friendly, and although there were varied levels of English spoken - all better than my Spanish - there was always someone around to translate when needed. When we had an early departure for a flight, we were supplied with a take away breakfast. I got to rececption before our driver, and the person on reception went to find me a coffee whilst I waited. As soon as we started to take our bags out of the room, the security guard heard, and was straight up to carry our bags down. The reception team were also happy to arrange taxis as required. The hotel is in a vibrant, busy part of the old town, and at the weekends, the street outside is busy with shops and restaurants along it. It looks quiet during the day but comes to life in the evening. We were made to feel exceptionally welcome in the hotel, and on our return visit were greeted like old friends. I would very happily stay here again.

My oasis in this city, with perfect location in the historic center, a rooftop terrace with amazing views and a welcoming, helpful staff. The hostel has a colonial feel to it and is very clean. Flowers everywhere! A great breakfast with a smoothie, an omelette, a cheese sandwich and a coffee. Quiet and peaceful, very safe.

This hotel sits in the SE corner of the Centro Historico of Quito and is located for easy access to all the attractions of the area. The hotel has an unassuming entrance on the Plaza de Santo Domingo (such that my out of town taxi driver could not find it; he phoned the hotel to find that we were parked outside but still did not see it). Entrance to the hotel is up stairs - reception staff kindly carried my suitcase - into an atrium around which the rooms are situated. Only a few look over the street and most open into the sunny atrium. My room was quite large with a comfortable bed and adjacent wardrobe. The ensuite was basic but with everything you need. Note - as with most of Ecuador toilet paper cannot be flushed down the toilet. The reception staff were polite and helpful, supplying maps and advice. The hotel was secure with all guests having to be buzzed in by reception upon entry. The area around the hotel and indeed the whole Centro Historico is well represented by police presence, it seemed on every corner. I was advised by the tourist police not to wander outside this area as it was not considered safe for tourists. Breakfast was fruit, juice, toast, cooked eggs with tea/coffee. This set me up nicely for the day.
Casa Alquimia

I arrived in Quito a few days before an organized birding trip, and am so glad I booked at Casa Alquimia. The location was perfect for exploring the Centro Historico, and the hotel itself was a delight. It’s in a historic building that’s been thoughtfully renovated. My room was spacious and immaculately clean. The bed was comfortable, with enough pillows even for this pillow fiend, and the duvet kept me toasty warm through the cool Quito nights. Breakfasts were ample and delicious (REALLY delicious), eaten on an enclosed terrace with a spectacular view of El Panecillo. But the best part was the warm, welcoming attention from the owners and staff. A few additional notes, in response to common questions/concerns. There was plenty of hot water for showers (you do have to let it run for a few minutes to warm up). Purified drinking water was provided. The hotel accepts credit cards, but cash is preferred. As for safety in Centro - I took basic precautions, asked for advice from my hosts if I was uncertain, and had no problems. I will return here in a heartbeat at the next opportunity, which I hope comes soon!

No air conditioning, so no heating, the quilt is too thin, the bed cover is a blanket, too heavy, a series of operations that I don't understand? Maybe it's for a strong or fat person to sleep. The rooftop scenery is beautiful, you can go up and see. Is it really unthinkable that there are no slippers? It's better to live in a Chinese homestay (。_í。) The price/performance ratio feels quite average I think 200 RMB is the best. It is worthy of praise: the friend's mobile phone fell into the taxi, the handsome guy at the front desk worked very hard to actively help find someone, chase the phone, thank you very much In addition, remember to tip your babies when you go out.

I absolutely loved my stay at this fantastic hotel. Its located in a fantastic position in the centro historico walking distance to everything. My room was huge and not only did it have great water pressure in the shower and super hot water but it also had a bath. The tv in the room had every channel and I could watch international football and there was a huge wardrobe. The room was cleaned spotlessly every day. The staff are incredibly helpful and the owner is a fantastic person who goes out of his way to help, organising taxis, finding out bus times and even letting me check out very late for no extra charge. Fantastic hotel and price is super cheap. If you are in Quito stay here, you will not regret it!
