We drove from Beijing to Dalian, stopping in Shanhaiguan along the way to rest and take the kids to Laolongtou. Most of the accommodations in the old city are B&Bs, each with its own character. Initially, I looked at options near the South Gate, but they were all traditional Chinese style, which I wasn't too keen on. Then, by chance, I discovered this place, and it met all our expectations, so I booked it immediately.
Upon checking in, we were very satisfied – it looked exactly like the pictures online. The front desk doubles as a coffee shop, and we were greeted by the aroma of coffee and freshly baked bread as soon as we entered. The room was spacious, well-equipped, and very modern. It perfectly matched our aesthetic preferences, and our child loved it too.
The overall service was also good, and the soufflé for breakfast was excellent. The only slight mismatch was the entirely Western-style decor paired with a Chinese breakfast. Perhaps it’s to cater to a broader taste, but it would be even better if there were an option.
The hotel's location is also good, right by the West Gate. You can park your car directly in front of the hotel (you need to drive around a bit). We have an electric car, and there's a charging station right next to the hotel (note: it's slow charging, 1.3 RMB per kilowatt-hour).
The room facilities are generally good, but I have three minor suggestions:
1. Although there's underfloor heating, it still gets quite cold in winter, and the small air conditioner isn't very effective.
2. For family rooms, I'd suggest having a proper door for the bathroom/shower. Currently, there's just a screen, and it's a woven bamboo one with many gaps, which isn't very convenient when you have kids.
3. The TV doesn't have a membership or cable, so most shows only play for a short trial period.
Overall, we were very satisfied and would recommend it to friends and family.
