Our stay at any RIU property in Punta Cana proved disappointingly comparable to budget accommodations in the United States like SUPER 8 or MOTEL 6. Despite booking for 18 individuals, including young children, through ******* based on seemingly inflated star ratings, the experience fell drastically short. 3 key issues marred our vacation.
1. attempts to communicate with RIU via the US and local numbers yielded no substantive assistance. The corporate customer service line displayed a disheartening focus solely on fund collection, neglecting customer care.
2. during check-in, staff prioritized guests who booked directly through RIU's website, causing unreasonably long waiting times. Room allocation issues arose, initially providing a smaller bed than booked. After insistence, the correct configuration was granted, yet pervasive room uncleanliness prevailed—hair, nails, and debris littering the floors.
3. pre-arrival dietary requests for allergies and religious considerations were ignored. Despite seeking vegetarian options, we were compelled to consume meat or fish-based dishes due to unresponsive management and staff with limited English proficiency.
Food quality, the second grievance, fell below par, even compared to establishments like Taco Bell. The buffet and restaurants shared a kitchen, with pervasive filth, cross-contamination, and a lack of hygiene, such as no glove usage during food preparation. Roaches and flies were common, and drink glasses were often dirty.
