Fabulous hotel, located in the centre of town with decent parking. Staff generally friendly and helpful, our room was very spacious and comfortable and the building has a fascinating history. We booked two nights half-board, reserving our table for dinner on both nights. The first night went smoothly, we turned up at the restaurant at the correct time, were shown to our table and had an excellent meal. The second night wasn't so good, we turned up at the restaurant at the correct time to be told we didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was full. We went back to reception where it was confirmed that we did have a reservation, they phoned through to the restaurant and told us that it was all sorted out. When we returned to the restaurant, we still had a 10 minute debate about whether or not we had a table, but a table was eventually found for us. We eventually placed our order an hour after our original reservation time. Unfortunately, there were two large tour groups that were clearly taking up all of the time of the kitchen and waiting staff. Both our main courses were cold, the fish was overcooked, the potatoes were undercooked and the veal fillet was so tough that it was inedible. Neither of us ate more than a couple of mouthfuls, and were surprised when no-one asked what the problem was when two almost untouched meals were cleared away. If we had the same experience in the restaurant on the second night as we had on the first, this would probably have been a 5-star review, but the problems of getting a table even though we had a reservation, and then the appalling main courses has resulted in a significant downgrading. Would we stay in this hotel again? Yes, almost certainly, but we would probably choose to eat elsewhere.

The bed was big and very comfortable, and the shower was large too (at last, a proper shower rather than a converted bathtub!). The breakfast was good, varied and copious, although there wasn't any wholemeal bread. The fridge was a bit noisy - we ended up turning it off. The house is spacious and has lots of indoor and outdoor areas for the use of guests. We had dinner on a bench on the lawn, where you could see an impressively dark night sky with the floodlight turned off. The hosts were very friendly and keen to help. We can't comment on the noise from other rooms because we were the only ones in the house at the time - they opened relatively recently. We used this hotel as a stopping point on the way to the Algarve, it is ideally situated near the main road. My husband is a wheelchair user and we asked for an accessible room (room 123) which was perfect. The twin beds are large and a good height for a wheelchair transfer, there is room under the bed for a hoist too. We moved the bed against the wall to help him with the transfer, plenty of room to manoeuvre his chair. Excellent bathroom for his needs too. The staff are very kind and helpful, we enjoyed an excellent meal in the restaurant and we very well looked after during the evening. Lots of parking and easy to find. Really pleased with this hotel and we have booked to stay again later this month.

This is a really nice hotel and I had a lovely big room. The bathroom has both a bath and shower. Soaps are in dispensers so there are few toiletries for a standard room. There’s a mini bar in the bedroom, a desk and chair as well as an armchair. There is no restaurant but there is an open plan breakfast room through the reception. The lady on reception helped me find somewhere to eat and see and was very friendly. The only downside was the slight smell of cigarettes in the room despite the notice in the room forbidding it. The lovely cleaner said they would have happily changed my room had I mentioned it. I enjoyed the city and Plaza Mayor.
