Khoom Kam Kaew

We stayed at this resort for two days. It's simply fantastic :-) The resort was nestled among rice plantations and longan farms, surrounded by mountains. The rooms were located in traditional Thai rice huts. The food is freshly harvested every morning from the resort's own garden and is organically grown. There are wonderful hiking trails around the resort. The resort owner is happy to explain the routes in detail. All in all, a place where you feel at home with warm hosts!

You really do need a GPS device to find this lovely resort. Luckily we had one. Otherwise, be sure to check Manfred's directions on Google Maps beforehand. Then you shouldn't go wrong. The property itself is a real insider tip, in our opinion. Michael looks after his guests lovingly and can offer valuable tips. With his help, you can perfectly explore rural Thailand. We were there by bike and regretted not having taken more time for Doi Farang. There are many paths in this remote valley, but no traffic. You won't even find any tourists there. The resort itself is immaculately maintained and offers various accommodation options, including simple, inexpensive wooden houses. We stayed in a stone bungalow, which was spacious, clean, and offered every comfort in its price range. We hadn't actually expected it to be so comfortable. The restaurant not only serves delicious ice cream sundaes, but also authentic, good food, which can occasionally be expanded to include German specialties (schnitzel) on request. A great tip for motorcyclists, too, as Michael knows his stuff. Doi Farang is the perfect base for anyone who wants to experience authentic Thailand, far off the beaten track. A rural oasis with all the natural sounds all around, including the croaking of thousands of frogs. We loved it.

That's a fitting description of the delightful Khoom Kam Kaew resort (formerly Doi Farang) in northern Thailand, which has been carefully and charmingly managed by German Michael for 25 years. Six stone bungalows and twelve converted rice barns are offered here, all set in 3.5 hectares of gardens. We didn't miss the pool, which is currently under repair, and the shady terrace of our bungalow more than made up for it. The resort is located seven kilometers outside of Phrao, but the free bicycles provided us with mobility, not to mention the physical exercise (we were traveling in Thailand for a total of three months – using public transport and taxis). In addition to the included (good) breakfast, Michael also offers a Thai "dinner menu," one of which even included a European outlier: "pork schnitzel with fries and salad." Of course, the Chang beer, which we so valued, was a must. The peach wine is an excellent in-house production. Delicious! If you don't mind a small detour to Phrao, it's definitely worth it. We came from Chiang Dao by songthaew (there's no longer any bus service).
