Parts of the city has been designated as part of the Shikotsu Toya National Park. The nine kinds of hot springs here all have their own unique characteristics, some are made up of hydrogen sulfide water, some contain salt water, and others contain iron. The excellent water quality here has made the hot springs well known around the world.

The most notable part of the hot spring area in Noboribetsu is Hell Valley. Here, volcanic gas is emitted from the surface of the grayish yellow rocks and the surrounding air contains a strong sulfur odor. The valley is a burst crater with a diameter of 450 meters and the hot springs there produce up to 3,000 liters water per minute.
