Stayed in the Clayton block, lack of signs that direct you to accommodation. On approach building looks out of a horror film. Rooms very tired and dated, coat hooks hanging off walls, door framed knocked and paint missing, window sills lack of paint, windows dirty and panes misted and discoloured. Lack of elec sockets, loose fittings, bathroom tiled floor, no way of putting wash bags off floor other than one thin shelf above sink, no plug in sink so have to run tap for a shave, towels have to hang on disabled hand rails. Breakfast quite poor unfortunately, cafe shuts at 6ish. Come on management get your maintenance team to walk around pads sorry I mean rooms. One thing is the bathroom stinks of damp, no ventilation… I work in a prison and can tell a like away that funiture, colours and fittings are hmp, get it tidied up. Checkout is another thing, led to believe check out was 10:30 then told always been 09:30 but on room door Sunday is 12:00…. Little bits like this is what you need to address, then maybe your kpi would improve…

Checked in in time for Sunday lunch as there is no restaurant or bar service on Sunday evening. The room was very well designed and appointed. It was spotlessly clean with an excellent bathroom with shower. There was plenty of tea, coffee, water etc supplied so the staff did not need to come into the room to replenish due to Covid regulations. More was available on request. The bed was very comfortable, plenty of storage space and a table and two chairs. Breakfast was served from 7.00am. We had the small cooked breakfast which was excellent, served by a very friendly chef. How you would manage the large breakfast I really don't know, as the small was very generous. Fried and scrambled eggs were perfect each morning. We booked our table in the restaurant for each day of our visit in advance. We were pleased we did as it was very busy on Sunday. We had roast beef which was lovely, very tender and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. Another night we had the steak and ale pie. The filling was delicious but it came with an enormous puff pastry lid which made it difficult to eat. It would be better served as a steak and ale casserole and do without the pastry lid or make it into an amazing pie ! The following evening we had gammon and the piri piri chicken both of which were very tasty. The portions were extremely generous and we thoroughly enjoyed all our meals. The bar offered a good range of beers, gins etc and there was a reasonably priced wine list. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and could not have done more for us. There was plenty of parking space and a lovely outdoor seating area to enjoy on a nice day. We would thoroughly recommend The Queens , the rooms and meals are excellent value for money. We would definitely stay again if we were in the area.
