We visited Kashiwaya Onsen with our son and his girlfriend, who had both visited before and highly recommended it. It did not disappoint. The bus ride up the mountain from Nanajoko Station hinted at how special this area is. Upon arrival, steps from the bus stop, we were greeted warmly by staff, explained ryokan etiquette, and showed to our rooms. Our private onsen overlooked the river. We also tried one of the reservable onsens on the property. Wonderful! We had an amazing traditional dinner and breakfast. Food was excellent; our server was friendly and explained about all the dishes we were eating. From start to bubbly finish, everything was excellent! If you want an authentic Japanese hotel stay, come here!

A wonderful experience that was accommodating and utterly magical. Incredible hospitality and facilities, in a cozy peaceful setting. The private shared onsen was incredible, and there are hiking routes and enjoyable sights dotted throughout Shima which make it perfect for a relaxing getaway. I regret only going for one night in my trip. Would go again, with friends.

This ryokan was excellent and exceeded all expectations! As a solo traveler, I felt comfortable and welcomed. The warm hospitality and service provided by the young staff, the delicious meals, their communication, the location and easy access from Tokyo Station all made this a memorable experience! This was the first time that a place provided such detailed directions, even including fotos of the bus stop and maps. The ryokan had 5 onsen, 2 public and 3 private. The private were outside and it was possible to soak under the stars or in the sun. I hope to return to this beautiful setting and enjoy Kashiwaya Ryokan again.

Our stay at this Ryokan was amazing! The environment was very relaxing and the staff was always hospital. The facility was very clean and well kept, including the onsen baths. The food for breakfast and dinner was some of the best food I had while I was visiting Japan. I would definitely recommend this place.

We stayed here for two nights in the Kame room and we couldn't have chosen better. All the staff is amazing, charming and welcoming. Since you step in the Ryokan you get fully into the Japanese ways. Food is top top top (go for the Japanese option, you won't regret it). The 3 private Onsens in the Ryokan are really good and so the one in our room (tip try it at night under clear sky even in cold night you won't feel the cold). The semaphore system implemented is really useful to know when the private Onsen are free. The onsen is tattoo friendly. The town is small but is really charming. Sleeping in the futon and wearing the yukatas during the stay was another incredible experience. Hope to come back here one day.

I selected the package for a second floor traditional room, with shuttle bus from Tokyo to Gunma and back. There is dinner and breakfast provided, they let you choose between a few time slots to serve you the meals in the dining hall. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The meals were very delicious, with a lot of local produce used. You will be very full. There are 3 private onsen located on the 2nd floor, and they have indicators in the hallway that let you know if any are occupied. There is also a more shared onsen on the 1st floor. The onsen were very enjoyable and relaxing. They also have a cafe and restaurant in town. I patronised the cafe twice and enjoyed the food and atmosphere very much. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and will definitely return back with my family. It wa a great first onsen and ryokan experience.

I stayed 1 one night and could have stayed many more. The team at Kashiwaya Ryokan is very welcoming. The beds are comfy, the food is amazing and the onsen (the shared one as well as the 3 outdoor private ones) are a dream. I was lucky enough that is was snowing while I visited making the outdoor onsen experience very special. I traveled alone, do have tattoos (the onsen and ryokan are tattoo friendly) and booked the package including the bus between Tokyo and Shima Onsen. The instructions were clear. Everything worked well, I hope to visit again. Thank you for the inviting atmosphere and relaxing time at your ryokan.

The staff was very kind and courteous. They helped us through the entire stay. The onsens were extremely well kept and beautiful. Through our journey of Japan so far this place will likely stay on top of our favorite experience here. From the people to the food and onsens. Every bit was excellent!
