Umbral, a Curio Collection by Hilton

Mexico City|0.49km from National Palace
This lovely gem is right in the heart of the city! The interior hallways are sleek and modern while homage to a historic past. The building is a former law office and the interior is a classic courtyard presentation. The restaurants and bar are on the roof top, which is the 5th floor. My room was on the street side and I got an upgrade due to my Hilton status, so I had this huge suite on the 4th floor with incredible views of the interior when I opened my door. The bathroom was roomy and spacious. The shower was huge with both a hand held and a shower rainfall option. I had dual sinks and the lotion and other amenities were very nice. The bed was comfy, the windows could open and there were many lighting options. There was bedside lighting, overhead lighting and more. It was quite amazing! The bedroom was all white and quite bright. My ”living room” was dark, but had so many additional lighting options, plus the record player, TV, and the bright window for when the curtains were open. The sliding door between the 2 rooms was perfect. And, I had not only a desk with hand sanitizer, but also a small dining table with 2 chairs in my ”living room”. It was a heavenly stay. Now, the pool was tiny, but the hot tub was lovely and the cocktails were nice! Breakfast at Oliva was included for me and was delicious. The other restaurant on the rooftop, Paixa Do was also quite amazing. Creative food and a gorgeous view with excellent service and a great wine selection. What else? The front desk staff and bellmen were lovely. The concierge was a little odd to me, so I ignored him after the first day. It was easy to take an Uber from my hotel and the Uber was very cheap in US $. Within walking distance were a few Sanbornes, a money exchange place, and some nice restaurants. I totally would return here again. It was my fifth trip to Mexico City in the last 15-20 years and I've stayed only in 1 other place twice. Again, this is a fantastic place to stay...I almost forgot to mention the private movie theater upstairs, the art gallery and the records (vinyl LPs) that one could take and play on bluetooth speakers in your room! What a treat!

Holiday Inn Buenavista, an IHG Hotel

Mexico City|2.78km from National Palace
The hotel is very modern and clean, it has TVs that you can cast Netflix etc from your phone on. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful. It is in a nice location and I felt safe in the area and the hotel without my husband and with three small children. There is a mall and Walmart within walking distance and there are no problems getting an Uber taxi or food delivered. It’s easy and cheap to get around to the main sites. The negatives are they don’t have fridges in the rooms, ice is available but they give it to you in a plastic bag rather than an ice bucket. We needed the ice to keep baby bottles cool, our plug on the sink didn’t close and we had nothing else to put them in. The second negative is that the cleaners keep taking the spare room keys from the slot by the door even if you haven’t pushed it down to activate the lights when you are out it will be taken. The third negative is about the Starbucks at the hotel. There is a young man who works there and he just couldn’t get the orders right, I went there three times he was working and each one of those drinks were incorrect. It really annoyed me that he would would then strongly push for a tip when he isn’t great at his job. The one day my 4 year old ordered a strawberries and cream Frappuccino and he got served a small cappuccino! The last negative is that the a/c is terrible, it doesn’t get very cold but makes the air quality terrible. Our noses were all dried out and cut by the time we left.

Hostel Mundo Joven Catedral

Despite its convenient location and relatively clean rooms, several significant issues greatly affected our overall experience. One of the main drawbacks was the excessive noise within the hostel. Unfortunately, the rooms were all oriented towards either a closed courtyard or the staircase, and the lack of proper windows intensified the noise levels. Instead of windows, only wooden shutters were provided, which proved ineffective in blocking out the sounds from outside. As a result, getting a restful night's sleep became a challenge, and any hopes of tranquility were shattered as early as 5 am each morning. Adding to the disappointment, a booking issue arose during our stay. In an attempt to address the problem, the hostel offered us cocktail vouchers and a promised 15% refund. However, when we arrived at the bar to redeem the vouchers, we discovered that they were only valid for Mezcal or beer, contradicting the promise of cocktails as advertised. Furthermore, despite reaching out to the hostel twice regarding the 15% refund, we have yet to receive any response or reimbursement. This lack of follow-through reflects poorly on the hostel's commitment to customer satisfaction and further contributed to our disappointment.

Needless to say, the location is just a few steps away from Syntagma Square. There are all kinds of facilities around, including pharmacies, convenience stores, subways, tourist buses, Mayan museum, etc., all within a five-minute walk. There is also a Chinese buffet that is also delicious! The hotel service is super good. There are free snacks, hot coffee, and free bottled water. If you encounter problems, you will actively help solve them.

The rooms and facilities are a bit old, the ventilation is not very good, but close to the attractions, you can go to many places on foot. There are also a lot of shopping around. If you don't mind having a taste, you can consider it.

I booked this hotel due to its close proximity to the Plaza del Zócalo but I didn't realize how close it is to other attractions like Aztec ruins, cathedral and even some of the great restaurants. This hotel is not too far(15-20 mins Uber ride) from the airport. Receptionist spoke decent English and so I didn't have any issues there. They have an elevator which is convenient for people who are staying in top floors. Room isn't cramped but not too spacious either and comes with comfortable bed.. It has power outlets near the bed which was very convenient. They have a safe but you have to pay a deposit to get the lock for it but the money is refundable once you return the lock. They had complimentary water bottles in the room which was nice. Wifi was good even in my 2nd floor room. Hotel has a restaurant in the same property and you get 10% discount if you stay at the hotel and eat there. I had dinner there and food is good.Being able to walk to near by attractions and restaurants alone gives you the value for what you pay imho. Overall a great place to stay in Mexico City and I would definitely stay here if I visit again.
