Novotel Suites Manila at Acqua

Novotel Suites Manila at Acqua

Mandaluyong|0.95km from downtown
My wife, 7-year-old daughter and I stayed at this hotel for 11 nights from 3 to 14 December 2023. Pros This is a very new hotel, having just officially opened in November 2023. Prior to this, it underwent a “soft opening” for a year. Being a Novotel Suites, the hotel room is spacious, complete with a small living room area with a couch and table, along with a small kitchenette with microwave. There is a king-sized bed with a TV. We had a view of the Pasig River, and of Makati City Hall on the other side. Airconditioning was strong and cold, unlike the air-conditioning we’ve experienced in glitzier hotels such as New World Hotel or SEDA Hotel in BGC. The bathroom adopts an open plan, whereby it has no door. There are two sinks and mirrors, and the toilet and shower are in separate cubicles. Being in the Philippines, the toilet thankfully has a bidet. This setup is therefore less than ideal for non-families or non-couples as the bathroom provides no privacy when you step out of the shower or toilet cubicles. The trash can is placed inside the toilet cubicle, but we found it more practical to have it beside the sinks as the only other trash can is under the study table beside the window on the other side of the room. Dental and vanity kits are provided daily, although housekeeping was inconsistent with providing vanity kits. I always search for vanity kits as I need the cotton buds that are part of the kits. I will discuss the housekeeping service later under cons. The hotel is well-located: while technically in Mandaluyong City, it is very close to Rockwell Makati thanks to the new Estrella bridge. The hotel is part of a condominium development by Century in a subdivision-like area named Acqua. When meeting up with people, Power Plant Mall was much more convenient than Ortigas, Mandaluyong malls such as Megamall or Shangri-La Mall. Power Plant is only a 10-minute drive, while the Ortigas malls were around 30 minutes away. The hotel has easy access to EDSA. Non-Filipino tourists, however, should not expect glitzy surroundings similar to hotels in Bonifacio Global City, Makati City hotels along Ayala Avenue, or Ortigas hotels. The approach to the hotel requires driving through small alleyways and a two-lane road along the Pasig River. These streets are nevertheless well-lit, clean and safe, with a police car constantly stationed near the Hulo Ferry Station and people out and about even in the wee hours of the morning. We found the less than chic surroundings to be a positive, as this enables access to cheap yet reliable services that would otherwise not be as easily accessible from the glitzier hotels of the metro. For instance, a laundry service just steps away from the Acqua subdivision was extremely convenient and affordable. For little more than the price of laundering two articles of clothing at Novotel (PHP 125 for up to 8 kilos plus the cost of detergent and fabric softener sachets), we could have 8 kilos of clothes washed and delive

SM Megamall

Discovery Suites Manila Philippines

Discovery Suites Manila Philippines

Pasig|0.32km from SM Megamall
Much of the value of this hotel comes from the superb location. It's right across the upscale Podium Mall and a few minutes walk from the more busy SM Megamall and Shangri-La Plaza Mall. Also near places of worship if you're visiting on a Sunday. MRT is a few minutes walk away, and it's easy to book Grab in the area as it is within the CBD. The room is dated, but well maintained. There's a recent renovation done on the bathroom and the choice of nice fixtures are noticeable -- the idet doesn't surprise you with sudden pressure and the rain shower is really good. Water temperature is well-controlled. The bathtub has a nice marble top which is good for placing a bottle of drink or your tablet to watch a few Netflix shows while soaking. You can get a bathbomb from one of the nearby malls. Choice of toiletries could be improved, but all is good. The sofa cover is made of a sort of velvet which was worrisome for me to sit on. I had a few itches under my thigh after seating on the desk chair, so just used the bed after that. It may be good to replace the furnishings with more maintainable surfaces. Airconditioning is good, but the outdoor unit located under the floor near the windows is noisy. Entertainment options could be improved if the room is marketed as a staycation option. The TV remote only works from 1 meter away, and the TV is not smart, so you won't be able to cast Netflix and YouTube. The subscription package on the analog cable also doesn't include most HD and premium channels. There's no bluetooth speaker available and the intercom system is very dated. Refrigerator is small, but was cools well. Complimentary service is sp**** (just 2 packs of instant coffee and 2 small bottles of water). This won't be a problem if you're staying at the hotel as a halfway home and are mostly out to have meals with family and friends and do some shopping before heading out of Manila to your final destination, as I had. I haven't tried the hotel's restaurants and in-room dining, but would find an opportunity to do so when I come back. Service of the staff is outstanding. I arrived early morning as my flight has been pushed back, and the staff welcome (starting from the doorman) was refreshing. Reception staff is very professional, and staff I've met inside the elevator were friendly. Housekeeping was also quick to respond to my request. Check-in and check-out was fast. Overall, my stay had been comfortable and I would definitely book again. Rates at trip.com could be 50% lower than published rates for gold tier members, so this is a good opportunity to enjoy a stay at the hotel. Some rooms like mine have windows facing the other building's firewall (2 meters away). It still lets in light and is good for privacy, but if you intend to have a better view, don't forget to mention it during check-in. I would be happy to see this hotel renovated to maybe a transitional style (based from it's current classic theme), have the furnishings modernized, and the amenities improved, and I wouldn't mind paying more for such a good location.

The Malayan Plaza Hotel

Pasig|0.33km from SM Megamall
We booked this as this is the last triple room that we can have at a short notice and since we are going to Megamall and SM East Ortigas. The hotel is very close, minutes walk to Podium and Megamall. We booked the studio room that has 3 single beds to accommodate me, my bf and my mom. it comes with free breakfast and access to pool. The buffet breakfast is at the 33rd floor, same floor as the pool and not to expect much, limited choices but it was good. There is no creamer for Coffee, only milk. I didn't like the bread and the fruit choices are limited. But overall, it was ok, average buffet. I think it's not really a hotel but a serviced apartment. It doesn't have in room dining, no kitchen to accommodate you except during breakfast buffet. There is free water and some toiletries but slippers are available upon request. We also had to call the reception to request for stirrer (not available) or spoon since they have free coffee in the room, which took sometime before they delivered. The aircon is okay, there is a veranda but you cannot open the access to it. Anyway, view is not so nice there so it's ok. We took time to dip in the pool after breakfast. It was ok, shower not ok though and since it was raining, I was kinda hesitant to go in, unsure if water is clean (it's an outdoor pool). in short, we didn't stay long and decided to just watch TV in our room. btw, make sure you are not dripping in the elevator or there will be extra charge. There is also surcharge for drinks and food beyond normal consumption. Location wise, yes it's good but there's a lot of room for improvement here.

Kudos to Ella and Jess for making a highly efficient team. The management is lucky to have them. The bldg has an excellent location with proximity to railway. A great deal in a prime area. Rooms are clean with comfy bed and pillows. There is a convenience store just beside the hotel. Guests will surely come back. Your home in Mandaluyong.

The room is relatively small and the health condition is pretty good. Sound insulation is not good. I didn't know it was like this in the local area. They didn't provide quilts. I asked the front desk and they said they didn't. They only provided a place to stay. The waiters are very polite.

Edsa Shangri-La, Manila
4.5/5104 Reviews
We have been going to Edsa Shangrila for family staycations for a long time now. It's our whole family's favorite quick getaway. We feel most comfortable and taken cared of at Edsa Shangrila. Our kids especially love swimming in the pool. We would like to give a special shout out to Sir Manny (lifeguard) for chatting with our 2 boys from time to time and for always keeping our kids safe while swimming. Thank you too to Sir Oteph Silvan, lifeguard for taking care of us. For my husband and I, we enjoy having drinks and peanuts at the Pool Bar made relaxing and easy with the impeccable service headed by Mavic and the whole Pool Bar team, Chef Anthony and Nikki! Of course, the whole stay won't be complete without experiencing dining at The Heat. We are most at home with our friends at Heat namely, Kap Mike Cifra, Angelica Banal, Stephen Manuel, Vergel Siason, and of course with Chef Anthony Catipay. Special shout out too to Luigi Bautista, Service Associate from guest service center who always took care of our Heat dining reservations and for the care he has has given us during our stay. Thank you too to Sheryl Meneses for her attention to details in keeping our rooms so clean and comfy. Edsa Shangrila is definitely a place we call home because of the great accommodations and the excellent service of people who work there that have become our good friends as well. We'll definitely be back because of them.
