We had a really enjoyable stay. The pub/ hotel was lovely. The staff were friendly and welcoming. As well as staying in accommodation we also booked an evening meal in the pub restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and the service great. We also enjoyed the 3 glasses of wine for £10 offer that gave us the chance to try some different options . Our room was clean and had a great size en-suite with both bath and shower. The breakfast ( included in room price) was delicious and generously sized. We would definitely recommend and wouldn’t hesitate to return if in the area again Thank you to all the staff for making us so welcome.

We had a voucher for lunch at the Black Lion. We were very impressed. The food was delicious; I had a lovely scotch egg and my steak was just as I like it. Chips to die for.. My husband was delighted with his fish cake and pork cheeks. Jo O looked after us extremely well. A very good lunch experience.

My Sister and I visited today for lunch at the Black Lion in Long Melford. Gorgeous village with lots of pubs to choose from - but the very best of the bunch by a country mile was the Black Lion! Overlooking the beautiful village green and a warm welcome from Joe O - who was very professional. Super food, classy, cosy and just perfect! We just had a snack and drinks but it was five star - highly recommended.

We needed a 2 day break and the black lion provided us with a lovely stay where nothing could be faulted . The room was very nice with every comfort and an amazing shower. The staff were all fantastic in particular Jo in the restaurant . We'll the full Suffolk breakfast was to die for and probably added a few pounds to my weight ! We found thus hotel in top pubs to stay in England book . The restaurant was superb and they let us have our table 1 hour and a half early so we could play our board game . . Little things mean alot .

The view from room 2 at the Black Lion looking down over the village green towards Melford Hall (National Trust) is one of the best we have seen from any hotel. England at its finest. The food at the Black Lion is simply amazing and it is accompanied by a fine selection of wines and beers. Service is great and the staff are very friendly.

We stayed here 16 years ago for our wedding anniversary and returned for our 20th anniversary as a trip down memory lane. We remembered it as a really elegant and classy stay with amazing food and surroundings - a real treat!. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to our memories on this visit. It all looks a bit shabby - eg, really grubby carpets on the main stairs, black stains on the carpet in our room, peeling paint in some areas and the toilet roll holder hanging off the wall in the downstairs facilities. It could all do with a good deep clean, a bit of investment and lots of TLC. We had a lovely afternoon in the bar, which was really comfortable and a nice spot to enjoy the rugby! The food in the restaurant in the evening was nice. The scotch egg and fish cake starters were delicious. Our only grumble was the lack of pork with the pork cheek and risotto - a few small pieces of meat compared to loads of rice. Th e staff were all very friendly. We felt it was a bit pricey for what it was, and wont return. We could have stayed in a 4/5* hotel with better facilities, amenities and service for the same price.

We had a brilliant 'treating ourselves' overnight stay here. Room 2 - the suite, with a sitting room, large bedroom and well appointed bathroom - was clean, bright and comfortable. I really enjoyed the comfortable window seat with a great view towards the main part of the village for reading my book. We ate our evening meal in the pub and enjoyed the benefits of the Wine Down Wednesday offer (half price bottle of wine with a 2 course meal). Food was well cooked and tasty; husband's steak was perfectly cooked and didn't need a steak knife, it was so tender. Desserts were larger than expected. Breakfast was tasty but husband felt his full Suffolk portions were a bit on the small side. Staff were attentive, welcoming, fun and approachable - a credit to the establishment. It isn't the cheapest of places but for us most definitely worth every penny and somewhere we would stay again.

Overall it would've been fine, there were lots of plus points like the food was tasty but for the price there were bits that let it down. I shared the below feedback with the pub directly and with the Chestnut group and got no response. I understand things can get missed, but when raised it wouldn't take much to reply and apologise and try and make it right. Real shame as I was excited to try some of their other venues, but as the management clearly don't care I won't be. 1) We booked the romantic package, which included dinner, a night stays, breakfast, bottle of fizz and chocolates (supposedly). On booking, it said 'a bottle of bubbly waits for you in your newly refurbished bedroom' and also said a Tosier chocolate treat was included. There was nothing in the room when we arrived, we had to ask for the bubbly, then it was added to our bill and we had to ask for it to be removed. Not the end of the world but nicer to not have to ask, somewhat spoils the 'specialness' of it. We also never got the chocolate treat. 2) We stayed in room 2, it was impossible to only have the lamps on. You could either have main, very bright lights on or main lights PLUS lamps, but you couldn't just have lamps. This seemed a very strange set-up. There was a dimmer in the bedroom which in theory meant you didn't have bright lights but the lights flickered when lowered so really it was super bright light or darkness as the two options. 3) I would have mentioned all this on checkout but wasn't asked how the stay was. I don't think I've checked out of somewhere without having been asked if everything was ok.
