We stayed at Connect Inn Gion and overall felt the price and location were excellent. The area is very convenient and easy to walk around. Do note that the building and room PIN codes are only sent after 3pm. For my booking (through Trip.com), I only received the PIN after I asked for it. They will also check what time you are arriving to collect the hotel tax. The room is not squeaky clean, but for the price it is still acceptable. I did notice the bath tub water looked slightly cloudy compared to the water from the basin, which I noticed when using my own transparent cup. Amenities like toothbrush and cotton pads are provided. There is also a small kitchenette with cups, plates, and basic utensils. The room I stayed in (302) had 3 beds and 1 futon, and the beds have rollers so you can combine them. On the second day, my door did not auto-lock, but I called the property through the Trip.com app and it was resolved. There is also a free washing machine and dryer on the first floor, shared by all guests. It’s a bit old, but still usable. Overall, the place is slightly run-down, but the great price and perfect location make up for it. We still enjoyed our stay.

After work in Nagoya, I headed to Kyoto for a solo trip. Since I was only there for a night's sleep and I was an inbound tourist, I couldn't afford a fancy hotel, so I booked my first hotel primarily based on price and location. I'm usually very picky about hotels, so I checked the separate bathroom and toilet, checked the cleanliness of the room, and checked the photos, and decided on this one because it looked good. However, I was surprised to find that check-in was unattended and I had to enter my own PIN number. There was a half-empty bottle of cola on the counter that looked like the front desk... And a bath towel carelessly discarded on the floor in front of the shared washing machine, visible at the back of the front desk... At that point, I thought, "Ugh!" But since I'd already paid, I had no choice but to head to my room on the second floor. The hotel only had a narrow staircase, which was fine for me since I only had small luggage, but I think it would be difficult for international travelers. The room also required a PIN number to enter. When I entered, it was a spacious room with tatami mats, just like the photos. The separate bathroom and toilet were nice, but there was a strange smell throughout the room that bothered me... The bathroom was moldy and filthy, and when I looked for a bath towel, I found one that looked like it had been used hanging in what appeared to be a closet, which made me feel sick. I definitely wouldn't take a bath there. When I stay in a hotel, I usually get hives when I get into bed because of the house dust on the bed sheets. Since I couldn't take a bath and had nothing to do, I lay in bed sideways playing with my phone, and then half of my face broke out in hives on my under-eye bags, temples, nose, and chin. That was also really gross and made me feel awful. I could hardly sleep, and I couldn't conserve my energy. After checking out, I only saw one thing I wanted to see and took the 3pm Shinkansen back home. I will never stay here again, and I don't recommend it either.

Check-in is quite inconvenient. There is no elevator in the accommodation and the stairs are very small, but the location and the room are quite good. The bed in the room has wheels at the bottom, which is very convenient for families with children. However, it is a pity that the bottom of the bed is not cleaned and is very dirty. The rest of the room is very clean. Overall, it is a room worth staying in.

Although we did not have face-to-face interaction with anyone at the property, they were very responsive messaging through ******* app. The property was lovely and just as the picture displayed. We were able to check in at 1pm instead of 3pm because the housekeeping was done, which was greatly appreciated because we were hot and tired after our trip! The location is wonderful! Walkable to Pontocho alley, Nishiki Market and all the shrines on the East side of Gion. We would stay here again!

It is the only hotel that sent me far too many emails to inform me, confirm and reconfirm with me. It was annoying. It’s a contactless hotel but it was tedious to just get the code for the room and the main door… They asked me days before my arrival if I could confirm I was coming, then they wanted to know the time of my arrival then they would ask me to let them know when I was 30 minutes from the hotel then I had to inform them when I was in front of the hotel to just give me the code to enter the hotel. Then they would let me know while I am at the hotel door that the check-in is actually at 3 pm knowing I was arriving in the city at 1:30 pm. They let me in but it was tedious and totally unnecessary. I think I got about 20 messages starting days before arriving to the hotel. I was so relieved that no other hotels in Japan sent me so many emails.

I like that it is perfect for introverts as there is no need to speak to staff really everything is done independently. I did not like that there is absolutely no way of reaching higher floors without having to carry your luggage & of course I got the top floor & had oversized luggage. I think maybe assigning rooms based on luggage would help. However, I assume this may not be possible due to specific room types on specific floors (ie; two beds rooms on floor 2 & single beds in room 3) but other than that it was great especially for a solo traveler
