Just spent our Christmas Eve dinner here and I must say I’m puzzled by the one star. We ate at two restaurants in Tokyo with a one star during our trip both great experiences. We had high expectations for our meal this evening. Love Villa Lacoste as we live in the south of France and know what to expect from a food standpoint but in Japan the level of service is very high and here, we felt it fell short. The food was very good but not great. The service was the real problem. People seemed to be going through the motions with no passion for the food or the wine. Seemed like no one was in charge of the room. We did the wine pairing and usually enjoy the story telling and relationship to the dishes. The food was not well timed and I personally felt rushed at times. Wine on the table and no food then food on the table no wine. Sadly no report was established and we felt we had a good meal but not an extraordinary experience. When we left no one asked how was your meal. We were handed a little bag with a cake in it and told merry Christmas. Almost like out you go. Not how I hoped to end my Christmas holiday in Japan. Here’s to the New Year! This will be a meal we remember and not for the good experience.

Our stay at The Shinmonzen in Kyoto was very memorable and a true highlight of our trip to Japan. Designed by the legendary Tadao Ando, the property feels more like an exclusive villa than a hotel, with just nine beautifully appointed suites and a serene setting right along the Shirakawa River. The location in the heart of Gion, on historic Shinmonzen Street surrounded by art and antique shops, could not have been more perfect for exploring Kyoto. The staff were very warm, attentive, and went out of their way to make every detail effortless, from setting up a peaceful riverside breakfast, setting up afternoon tea for us when we had no reservations, to guiding us through the neighborhood. Dining at Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen was a memorable experience, and the intimate atmosphere made us feel as though we were guests in a private home. The design, service, and setting combine to make this a hidden gem — one we would return to in a heartbeat. This hotel was the highlight of our trip to Japan that included Tokyo and the amazing island of Naoshima.

The Shinmonzen is absolutely fantastic. It’s classy and the service and hospitality is out of this world.Any and all requests are met with two words - “with pleasure”. The rooms are superb, the bed is very comfortable, the food is fantastic and as I will repeat again the service is outstanding. Katrina-san, Luna-san and the team have created an unique hotel in Kyoto. We will compare all future hotels against The Shinmonzen and they have set a very high bar.

I have never been to a 5-star boutique hotel that welcomed us like the Shinmonzen did. It is a beautiful property that sits right on a serene canal, just steps away from historic areas of Kyoto in the Gion district. From the moment we entered, Dana-san and many others who we met when making the reservation and at the hotel (Luna, Mami, Hina, Yoshi, Yuma, Ziyo) made us feel like we had just arrived at our own home. I have never experienced service at that level that was so personal and genuine. While the staff and their level of service would be a reason on its own to stay at the Shinmonzen, the property and the area around the hotel were such a unique blend of old and new. The hotel is both modern (designed by Tadao Ando) with striking and interesting abstract and other art and traditional; the surroundings include shrines and buildings that show the thousands of years of Japanese history. We tried both the Japanese and American breakfasts, on our room balconies. One of my favorite dining experiences of all time at a hotel. I felt like I was starting the day with such health and serenity. Instead of the hotel restaurant (where we had drinks most days, but not meals), we opted instead to try options that were much more casual around the city -- all of the recommendations made by the hotel, including tempura, mackerel, and ramen/soba, were absolutely stellar. Of all the hotels I have stayed in while traveling for work or vacation in Japan over the years, this is by far the best hotel I have been and I hope someday to return.

The hospitality of this place is incredible. The warmth of the people is amazing and remarkable. Tadao Ando really went all out in designing this place that every single detail is thought about from the material of the door handle to the thoughtfulness of how a guest moves around. We have stayed in some of the world’s best hotels, resorts and villas but this tops our list as the best hospitality experience. The food, the architecture and the location is all outstanding but the hospitality takes the cake. The team goes beyond and above to make you feel the soul of their service and hospitality and culture. We will be definitely back. Thank you, Shinmonzen team, for the experience!

The experience we just had at The Shinmonzen was truly second to none. The ryokan itself is stunning with meticulously clean rooms, extremely comfortable beds, beautiful and very large wooden bathtubs which they fill for you every night, huge bathrooms, lovely balconies overlooking the waterway, and a team that provides the highest quality services we have ever experienced. The guest experience team helped us to shape an itinerary full of things we would never have been able to experience had we not stayed with them - a private tour of the Kiyomizu-Dera temple, a tea meditation ceremony, and a Zen meditation - each of these three experiences was truly unforgettable and worth every penny. We learned an enormous amount and felt not only immersed in Japanese culture but genuinely cared for with the exceptional personalized service we experienced. The food at The Shinmonzen is also amazing. I had the Japanese breakfast every day and the variety as well as quality of the flavors were beyond words. The staff at The Sinmonzen were there 100% of the time, anticipating our needs before we even knew them ourselves. Every single member went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. We honestly can not recommend this stunningly beautiful ryokan enough, not only for the comfort, bespoke stay, and overall privacy it provides, but also the wonderful team of people we met during our time there. We hope to be back someday soon.

The phrase that comes to mind to describe the Shinmonzen js “exquisite perfection”. we have stayed at a number of hotels at similar price level, yet the Shinmonzen stands out in its elegant blend of the old and the new, its perfection down to the most minute details, beautifully crafted furniture in the room that doubled as art, its location right in the heart of the Gion district, and of course warm hospitality. As a masterpiece by Tadao Ando, it is one of the most beautiful and unique hotels in the world.

I had the pleasure of staying at The Shinmonzen recently, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget. From start to finish, the team went above and beyond to make my stay special. Luna, Satsuki, Yu, and Komang and the whole team were incredibly thoughtful and attentive. They helped me organize a series of unique experiences tailored perfectly to my interests. I had a private tea ceremony in a closed temple, which was an extraordinarily genuine cultural encounter. The team also arranged a walking tour through the beautiful Gion Higashiyama area and secured a reservation for me at Ryō-shō for an unforgettable omakase dinner. Staff at The Shinmonzen provided a true luxury experience, and interacted with myself and other guests in a manner that was gracious, kind and also in a manner that seemed genuine and authentic to who they were. Some luxury properties are high on pomposity and overly solicitous artifice - but not The Shinmonzen. Paddy san should be very proud of this team. As a thoughtful parting gift, they gave me a book about Tadao Ando, which was a meaningful touch that truly set the experience apart. The Shinmonzen knows how to create a personalized and seamless stay. If you’re looking for a peaceful and luxurious experience in Kyoto, I can’t recommend it enough.

Without doubt the best place we've ever stayed. 1) well located on a quiet street right along a river in Gion 2) nine rooms only - ours was Kinu, very well designed 3) architecturally stunning (I don't use that word lightly) by Tadao Ando-san 4) service bar-none takes the cake - these are lovely people 5) jaw dropping artwork throughout the hotel from the owner's collection We both loved this place and wish we could have stayed longer.
