21C Museum Hotel Kansas City

Kaw Township|2.04km from downtown
I’ve now stayed at almost every 21C hotel (I haven’t been to Iowa). Gets an overall five stars with some stronger points and some weaker points. Strong: the artwork this time around was poignant, the thought provoking, and cohesive. The restaurant and restaurant staff were outstanding (The Savoy, reviewed separately). Their room service was awesome too. The beds at 21C have always been comfy and I like their toiletry products. Weaker: The front desk staff was a mixed bag. Generally helpful and nice, but I was received more coolly here than some other places. Housekeeping. I 1000% understand we are still struggling with COVID and the economy and labor issues. And I don’t know who had my room previously, but there were several small shards of glass in the seating area, there was a pair of underwear behind the couch (which I didn’t touch and left there), and I somehow found a pair of dried up old contact lenses on the bedspread. Please note, the room was generally clean and well appointed, but the three things I mentioned were pretty big things. Also, if we aren’t going to go back to having minibars (which I’m fine with), can we have mini fridges in the rooms? I get you’re trying to up-sell room service, but I would just like to be able to chill my water or have something cool to drink without asking for a (too small) bucket of ice. Would stay again. The positive far outweighs the negative. Tip: no valet parking, but there is a garage across the street that charges 10 bucks a night.

The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center

Kaw Township|0.22km from downtown
Westin is yet another business masking a massive decrease in service behind “pandemic safety.” The hotel itself is nice. Beds are new and comfortable, rooms are spacious, and the fitness room is well appointed. It’s the only hotel I’ve stayed in recently that had a comfortable HVAC system. The fan can be set to stay on, so the air remains fresh when heating/cooling aren’t running which helped me sleep. Rooms have a mini-fridge and a lovely big TV. However, I stayed six nights and my room was only visited by housekeeping once. They didn’t even bother to restock the in-room coffee, provide more shampoo, or refresh towels. I had to stop at the front desk. This was ostensibly for pandemic safety but I wasn’t in my room so any risk from simply replenishing supplies was purely imaginary. The hotel restaurant is only open for breakfast and the rest of the day service is only in the bar. The bar was somewhat understaffed and waits for drinks got lengthy in the evening. Coffee was only available in the morning. All of this is fine at AirBnB rates, but Westin is still charging as if they are a four-star hotel. What am I paying for if there is so little service? I also can’t recommend anyone book a conference here. I was attending a hobby conference where we were paying out of pocket. Westin didn’t provide any signage and allowed a ravenous horde of people from a professional conference to descend on our limited snacks. They messed up an expensive Friday dessert event by running out of food. Rooms were shifted around on short notice and some of our classes were crammed into a tiny, stuffy, room for six hours. To add insult to injury on Saturday night the hotel hosted a frat party and drunk kids roamed the halls singing loudly, laughing, and banging on doors until 3 AM. Westin didn’t have enough staff to keep these unruly guests under control. I am unlikely to stay here again without asking a LOT of questions in advance and frankly Marriott should be ashamed.

The Raphael Hotel, Autograph Collection

Kaw Township|5.14km from downtown
I've been coming to KC about every other year or so, for approximately 20 years, for work. I almost always stay at The Raphael Hotel. PROS - The hotel has that unique, kind-of-eccentric feel to it that I've found in some Autograph hotels. It has a personality, and feels somewhat European - Great location. There are shops, restaurants, museums, and beautiful houses within walking distance - Friendly staff. Tracee, a front desk agent, was helpful. David has been helping me with my bags for 17 years, and I understand that Bob has also been there that long. - I collected Bonvoy points - I received a complimentary upgrade to a suite. I'd requested a quiet room via the chat function, and they assigned me a room at the end of the hallway - They recycle, and have moved away from small plastic bottles to large refillable bottles - Pretty views from the top floors - I always have a drink and its charmingly-named neighborhood restaurant/bar, Chaz. It's quirky, like the rest of the property. Last time, a guy sat at the bar with his dog. This time, they had a musical duo (two older gentleman). Live music in a small setting can sometimes be annoying, but these guys were enjoyable, and the room was into it - The basic five requirements were met: The room was clean. It was dark at night. I could control the temperature. It was quiet. The bed had a top sheet. CONS - While Chaz has a certain je ne sais quoi at night, it's a little dreary at breakfast time

Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center

Stayed here recently for a conference; requested and received Suite Night Upgrade to the Presidental Suite! WOW! Now, the hotel and surrounding area had been without power for the previous 22 hr and just regained it a few hours before I arrived. Suite was def warm- and I thought it was because of the power outage. Tried to turn up the fan which didn't change a thing. (in fact, I turned all 3 thermostats I found in there down to 60 and high fan and it never changed over 4 days! So- this suite is on the 38th floor and spans the width of the building so different views of the city from LR/DR and BR. Large 4 poster bed-- but there is a 4 inch ”ledge” around the mattress which is waist high to me (at 5-6”) making it extremely difficult to get into! Then discovered the bedside table and lamp was too far away to reach from bed...3 of the 4 pillows were incredibly lumpy- glad I only needed one pillow! Flat sheet on the bottom which wasn't long enough to be tucked in on top or side so it looked like a war had occurred in the morning (oh- and 2 comforters on the bed but don't know if it ever got cooler than 75 or so!). HUGE bathroom- big double size tub (but the row of lights over it had 3/4 of bulbs out), big steam shower with fabulous water pressure (but mildew on ceiling and amongst the marble tile), large bottles of fancy products in the shower (that could not be opened for those of you worried about that-I'm not, but see lots of angst about this). Several spots in teh BR had mildew, and lightening wasn't great for makeup. LR has 2 love seat sized couches (found some sort of canisters in between the seat cushions- ew!) large desk, table for 8 on the DR side plus a full kitchen (but a dirty black plastic serving spoon was on the stovetop!). Lots of nice artwork throughout. Carpet was stained in many areas. Never saw a TV remote though TVs were in the bedroom, bathroom and LR (didn't look real hard in LR, wasn't watching TV anyway, but thought it was odd). Housekeeping did come in after 2nd night, remade the bed with the same (wrinkled) sheets. Conference rooms were pretty darn cold. Oh, and did tell front desk that the AC wasn't working, but nothing changed. (Heard someone else on 38th floor complaining too). Lounge hours are limited- never made it there. Did have a bite to eat in the restaurant bar one evening- def not worth the calories or $. Unfortunately not much around open after 5 or 6, esp on a Sunday evening. Lobby is gorgeous, lots of seating in many areas incl tables with outlets for working.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Kansas City Plaza

Kaw Township|3.99km from downtown
Hotel is in a great location, easy to find and parking is fairly easy, either in the outside parking lot or under the hotel in the parking garage. The fee to park is hard to understand, just another way that the hotel has to make money and there is just no way around it, unless you park at the hospital across the street (not recommended) Area around the hotel is safe. Hotel is old and dated, probably has not been updated since the day the hotel was born. Hotel check in staff was nice and friendly, and check in was quick. Room on the 11th floor was below average, as the hvac unit was very noisy and the bottom of the sliding doors at the balcony were not every cleaned and very moldy due to the moisture. The hotel was packed with everyone wanting to attend the parade. Room was in dire need of updating, bed was king and kinda lumpy and the fold out couch was poor and thin. Older tv's worked ok but they were dated and the picture could not keep up with the image....breakfast for us was at 9 am and the poor cook acted tired and upset that he was still working, so we felt bad having to ask for an omlet and he acted upset that we asked. the Breakfast was wiped out due to all the people going to the parade and we could only locate one poor waitress who was trying to keep up but plates and bowls were hard to come by. The food was not stocked after 9 so we just fended for ourselves. Just be forewarned that the hotel is a nice OLD traditional embassy suites with two rooms which is nice

Overall the experience at the hotel was very good, however, check in was lengthy and I had another issue at checkout I'll explain later. There was only one lady at the front managing to check in a long line of people. I can only imagine that they are still short staffed after Covid times. I had checked in 24 hours prior and chosen a room on my phone app, but our room was not ready and was given another. No problem..just glad to get one after the wait. The lady was pleasant checking us in but never apologized for the wait or welcomed us as Diamond members. Room was small but overall clean. Would have liked to have a comfortable chair to sit in but not one in the room. Breakfast was a buffet and overall average/good. Now the part not so good...apparently Hilton is now giving credits for breakfasts for (Gold & Diamond levels). It's put into your account to be used to offset the amount you spent. The amount can be different depending on the hotel. In most cases you will end of paying more due to taxes. I find this offensive and in my case the bookkeeping got messed up and it ended up being added in rather than taken out. I had to end up calling the hotel on two occasions to get it worked out...but it did happen. I appreciated the help of JoAnn and Robert and the bookkeeping department. In addition when checking out, I received my statement, it only showed parking that was owed. I was assured that the breakfast & credits were already sorted out. That was not the case as I found out a day later. Because Hilton President did handle my situation quickly I gave a very good rating!

Darrell (shuttle driver) was the highlight of the stay. He was very personable, energetic and made our whole party feel welcome. The front desk team coud take some notes on hospitality from Darrell. The hotel is centrally located but the building is a little dated.

I booked this hotel as I have not stayed here previously and wanted to try it out. The GM Jeff checked us in and noted that we have been upgraded in our room, though it appeared to be in the room I booked online. He told us that to get to our room, we should go outside to the parking garage elevators, go to the fourth floor, cross over to other elevators to get to the sixth floor where our room was located. We were surprised by this, and soon realized that if we just take the elevator right by our room straight down, we were at the elevators right next to the lobby, where we were checked in. Why we were given these bizarre directions, we have no idea. When going to bed, we noticed that there was dried blood on one of the pillowcases, along with an old stain on the comforter. We got rid of those and called the front desk to let them know about this. In their embarrassment, they comped us one night. The concierge service was OK but on the day of discharge after texting in the morning about extending the checkout time, I texted about getting help for getting our bags to our car and never got a response, so I contacted the front desk myself. A disappointing and gross experience and not really sure this hotel is worth the value that is placed on it. No idea why the GM gave these odd directions; is it so we don’t come back again?

The friends we went to from the airport were very convenient. It would be great if we took a taxi directly. Then the front desk service was very friendly. We stayed in so many hotels and felt that the price performance of the hotel was very high. Recommended

Very nice hotel for a few nights in Kansas City. Location between the real city centre and the Country Club Plaza area is nice. Looking both destinations are reaching with a small half an hour walk. Free breakfast is also enough. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

I was close to changing hotels prior to staying based on poor reviews, but decided because of the location we could deal with any issues that may have been unsatisfactory. Good thing we kept our reservations here as their wasn't anything unsatisfactory about the trip. The front desk team was very nice and quick to get more towels or anything needed. The Shower was amazing which consistently stayed hot and high water pressure for 4 of us to use back to back. The location is very convenient to all of the downtown activities. They have a shuffleboard table in the lobby that we played often. We went to the PS Speakeasy in the basement of the hotel that was nice. The Restaurant located on site was easy to get drinks at. Valet parking is $30-$35, but we self parked at the garage next door for $18 and easy to get to. The only comment I would make is I wish they had a pantry as we had $30 F&B credit per day, but did not get to use a days worth based on our flight schedule, it would have been nice to use it.
