Arriving in Kaitaia after 10pm most Motels were closed or full. My wife and I eventually found Kaitaia Motor Lodge situated just on the edge of town. The owner, Gina, opened the office up with a smile and a welcome. There was only a two bedroom family unit available which we happily took. To our surprise Gina only charged us for a single room unit rate. That says all you need to know about the owners. They made us feel like family. The units are well designed, convenient, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The location was perfect for exploring the northern peninsular and our one night stopover was extended to three nights. Certainly the best Motel we found on our two week road trip around the North Island. We highly recommend Kaitaia Motor Lodge and certainly plan to return.

The lady on reception was friendly and check in was easy. I drove round to the room to find a pillar in the way of my allocated car park. Not a problem until a car parked opposite me and a truck needed to get through. The room was awful. The dishes in the cupboard had old food attached. The bathroom was dirty, I mean really dirty and included the bonus feature of a spider nest on the window. The heater was not adequate for the cold ( and finding a plug for it involved serious furniture rearranging). I worked my way through the things, cleaned the dishes, bought food I could eat without using too many pans etc. Then we get to the noise. Not only did it seem that the water tank for everyone was in my room but you could hear everything in the rooms around, including people using the toilet. Just when I thought I’d made it through, I found the towel I had just dried my hair with was covered in mould. Stay somewhere else.
