    We stayed 3 nights in the Royal Kona Resort. We were first assigned to an upper floor room in the main building, but my girlfriend wanted to be down on the first floor. So they moved us to room 378 in the Bay Tower (which is the one closest to town). The room had a king bed, TV., A/C, 2 end tables and lamps, 2 inside chairs a tall bureau, a phone, (a high) electronic safe, small fridge, iron and ironing board, coffee maker, and a wet bar. The bathroom had a tub and shower. The lanai was huge, with 2 chairs, 2 loungers, and a table. But it had low walls, with the neighbors, so not as much privacy as desired. The window "blinds" were sliding wood blinds. Our room was a hike from the bar and pool area. And you had to go directly through a restaurant along the way. We were surprised that there was only one pool for such a large hotel. Since my girlfriend doesn't walk too well, this was an inconvenience, but being close to other restaurants in town made up for it. We used the laundry in the Lagoon Tower. While there, I checked out the lagoon, but it was closed - don't know why. As others have mentioned, there are only 7 handicap parking spaces in front of the hotel. But they are free, if you can get one. We enjoyed eating at Huggos On The Rocks restaurant, and watching the huge waves crash, over by our room. We were sure the patio would be wet when we returned, but it wasn't. Nice, but didn't seem like a resort that provided for all guests (especially those in the Bay Tower), so unlikely to return.

    This hotel needs serious help! Let me start off with saying that the staff is awesome. Bell service, valet, maids and bartenders are exceptional. Front desk was ok. I have been to this resort several times in the past for dinner and drinks. It’s always been top notch. We checked and this hotel with a prepaid package to a vacation company. They were going to charge us an additional $50 a day for the third person in the room. We pre-paid for three people in the room. So we decided rather than pay this fee we would upgrade to club level. Yes we paid more for club. The club is the worst club ever. They were supposed to have continental breakfast they had nothing. Coffee granola bars and juice cans. Two people in our room got breakfast buffet daily but not from club status it was because of the package purchased for the hotel. The afternoon appetizers and drinks was terrible. Selection was bad food was bad choice of two beers and two wines. Food dishes left uncovered with flies... After seeing this we came down for chips and wine. Did not trust the food. Now let’s talk about the resort grounds. Filthy with cats and mongooses... The lava rock that used to be pretty to look at on the edges of the garden had trash that had not been picked up. Pretty much any areas that people had access to there was trash. The views from this resort are beautiful. It’s in a great spot. It’s just not been taken care of. Our room was old but it was clean. Maid service was awesome. Even though the furniture was old it was still taken care of. I am a travel agent. I was embarrassed that I had sold this package to the two people that I were with. I’ve been selling travel for over 20 years and honestly this has been one of the filthiest hotels outside on the grounds that I’ve ever seen. The inside was clean and taken care of it was the grounds they were not. I am also a Marriott Silver elite member. I will not be returning to this hotel. And I’m certainly not going to send any of my clients here. I have sympathy for the people who work so hard to make your stay wonderful. This is sad.

    We stayed at the King Kam for 2 weeks in February 2020. The location is great if you don't have a vehicle as you can walk down Ali'i Drive to many restaurants, pubs and stores. King Kam has a small public beach right in front of the hotel. The water is calm and shallow, so good for families with young children. This is our first visit in 5 years and things have changed. The gardens are neglected now, there are not nearly the plants and flowers there used to be. There is a new mandatory $22US per day charge that has very questionable value. You get ONE welcome drink period. NOT a drink per day. You get the use of the beach chairs (Tommy Bahama) Which you could buy at Costco for a one time price of $36. (cheaper than $22/day) They now have a lame game area that I didn't see anybody using. Shuffleboard, horse shoes, darts, table tennis, this is supposedly part of why we are now paying $22/day on top of the room charges. This does NOT include any parking or anything else. Our trip was paid in full before leaving home...but this was an extra cost added on at the resort. On top of this we were getting random charges on our credit card daily from the hotel. $194, $97, $126. We inquired what this was for as we had not charged anything to our room. We had not even used the TV or Phone. Nothing. They told us it was a "hold" in case we charged something to our room, which is also bogus, as they have our credit card number obviously, it's not like we could check out and avoid any charges. The hotel is in the middle of renovations, finally. So some rooms have been changed from the 80s browns and golds to a new turquoise oceana theme. We were offered an upgrade to a newly renovated room...for a price...no thanks. The maid service was good, the hotel is kept clean. There is ample hotel parking in a paid lot beside the hotel. This is also extra per day. Drinks at the poolside bar were $12 for a cocktail. so we chose to buy our alcohol at the onsite ABC store (a Hawaiian 7-11 type store) We got one litre bottles of Smirnoff Ice for $3.16 each. Wednesdays there was live entertainment near the poolside bar. It was nice. 3 nights a week there is a Luau on the hotel grounds. If you haven't been to a Luau before I recommend it. Its good entertainment. We had been on our previous trip in 2015 so opted out this time. It's about $140/person for food and show. You can hear & see the show easily, but from a distance, from the beach or government dock right beside the hotel, which a few people do. Another new thing the King Kam now has are Cabanas at the back of the beach and lawn area, you can rent for $78US/day. Basically a bed with a cover over it. You can get bar service brought to you there and if you spend more than $75 on drinks and snacks the price of the cabana is waived. Very few people were using these.     Due to the pandemic many hotels in Kona were closed, and I just stumbled on this one. It was about 50% less than I had expected to pay, and the location was perfect. The room was large and very quiet. Comfortable bed and bedding. I appreciated the Keurig coffee maker. Since I stayed at another Holiday Inn recently I came prepared with extra coffee pods for the machine. The Front Desk ladies were all polite and helpful, and the rest of the staff always said hello. The pool is for kids, so don't plan to swim laps. The breakfast doesn't interest me since those kind of buffets tend to bring out the worst in people who think that Free Food is an invitation to get greedy. So I can't say what this hotel had to offer. I went out for breakfast. The location is awesome. One block off Alii and all the dining and shopping. My only disappointment was that the check in lady handed me a memo to inform me that housekeeping was only available every 5 days unless specially requested. For me, one of the pleasant things about a hotel vacation is coming back to a clean room each evening. I was unhappy about this, but I survived. I guess they had some staffing issues along with a busy hotel. All in all it was a good week, and I will return. The price was right, and I enjoyed my stay. A few glitches didn't change that.
