McCafferty's Guesthouse Ilford

We stayed at the Guesthouse for a week while working at the local ExCel Centre. The guest house is surrounded by many local takeaways and close to free parking out of normal business hours. (7:30-6pm Mon-Fri chargeble free the rest of the time) The accommodation has its own entrance which is accessible by a fob. Through the door leads you to a set of stairs that sits above the pub. Check in for us was speaking to the bar manager. The room was great value. Just be aware that on a Friday and Saturday Night the pubs live music can be heard but i did love the hotel provided ear plugs as standard in the rooms to aid sleep if you don't like live music. We both enjoyed it and would stay again.

We stayed two nights here before and after watching The Lord Mayor's show. Hotel was just a few minutes walk from the railway station. We used TfL travel, so had cheap travel into the Liverpool Street station with trains every 10 minutes. The double room was compact. But we had a good night's sleep. TV remote was not working. Ensuite shower over the bath was good. Towels and toiletries were provided. Breakfast was a buffet, self-service with hot and cold food, including full English, croissants, toast, cereal, jam, etc, fruit, yoghurt, tea, coffee, juice. Staff were replenishing food as and when needed. Would stay here again, as it was good value for money.

Noora never fails to go above and beyond every time we touch base, never fails to accommodate us fully and provides excellent customer service. Towels needed no problem toilet roll no problem parking info. Absolutely anything needed ask Noora. We stay in a variety of travelodge locations Inc Barking Becton Dagenham Ilford etc and would recommend any travelodge to family and friends.

I really wish we had booked somewhere else. We wanted a convenient night stay near a part of London we were visiting. Unfortunately, this was an absolute let down. Pros: • The First Lady we spoke to on the phone to confirm our booking was polite and helpful Cons: Bedroom • Incredibly small - double bed pushed up against a wall so you can only access it on one side. Not suitable for 2 people. • Plug socket not usable as this was up against the bed (see pictures) • No plug socket above bedside table • Room incredibly dirty - long hairs left inside of shower, we were certain it hadn’t been cleaned, but unfortunately this looked to be true of the whole hotel • Bed very hard - woke up with back, hip and neck pain and we only managed to sleep for an hour or so Bathroom • Completely worn down - grout dirty, everything was chipped and even the shower door struggled to close. Definitely not a shower you want to stand in bare foot • Shower unusable - you have hot and cold taps in the shower that you have to adjust to get the required temperature (outdated) but even when you think you have an ok temperature I think it must be connected to our bathrooms in the buildings as I was burnt 2 times by scalding temperatures, so much so that even turning the cold tap on full and the hot tap on low it didn’t return back to normal and therefore couldn’t finish my shower • No body wash available - only hand soap And the cherry of the cake… Breakfast • This started ok..ish. There is a continental with some pastries and cereals, and a menu that gives you a full breakfast option (even though the waitresses do not explain this option and you don’t really understand what is and isn’t included in your stay). But what topped it all for us was.. • Breakfast finished at 9.30am. At 9am a family came in and were told they could no longer sit in the breakfast area and had to sit in the front cafe - away from the continental buffet breakfast. Then asked us to leave in the middle of eating breakfast (at 9am) as they had a “conference” booked in the room!!!! They suggested moving our plates and food through to the front room, but after all the drama we just put down our cutlery and left our food half way through eating breakfast. This is completely unacceptable!! Can I suggest that Best Western only book conferences from 10.30am onwards to allow time for those that have paid for breakfast to eat in peace. Meaning you can serve breakfast until 9.30am as advertised, allow 30mins for those to eat that may have come down just before 9.30am, then have 10am - 10.30am to clean and prepare. OR just sit everyone in the front cafe area from the beginning so you don’t disturb customers half way through breakfast!!!! I complained at the Reception desk after this and all I received was a “sorry about that”. Everything about this stay was terrible. Next time I would rather pay double just to stay somewhere else.

Booked last minute, forgot to ask for ground floor room as I have mobility issues and they said all lower floor were taken. Our room was first floor which was three flights of stairs. The room smelt like smokers had been in there, it looked like it had been painted recently, but not professionally finished. Bathroom was tiny and had an awful back smell to it from the vent system. There was no plug hole to the sink and no soaps/toiletries. There was nowhere to hang clothes or towel in bathroom and no bath mat. The bathroom hadn’t been cleaned properly, was scum and water/soap marks round the outside edges of the shower. The small glass shelf was dusty and there were no glass provided in the bathroom. The painting and finishing off wasn’t done. There was a big hole on the floor behind the sink. I accidentally spilt water and it all went down the hole before I got chance to clean it. I’m the room itself the beds did look freshly made but no vacuuming had been done. It looked like the room had been made up quickly!! The beds were clean on inspection which was something and the mattress was comforting. There was a big round table between the beds (which I’m guessing would usually be under the window). There was a small desk with kettle on and packets of tea, coffee and milk. Tv above on the wall. Hairdryer in drawer which you had to crawl under the desk to plug in to socket as it was fixed in. There was no chairs or stool in the room to sit on to do makeup or put clothes/bags on. No hooks to hang coats. An old empty wardrobe was in the room but had no hangers inside. The curtains were old and needed a good wash as did the net curtains throughout the building. As for the carpets, well they were a mess. Stained and dirty in the room, would hate to think what had been spilled into the carpets. The carpets on the stairs and landings had paint marks on nearly all of them. I would not walk with bare feet. The dining room was nicely presented and a decent enough breakfast was available. However no Halal, which considering the area and the owners I found strange. However there were cereals and juice, coffee and English breakfast. A lovely lady was on hand in the kitchen to make tea and toast. The reception staff were very friendly at all times. Parking was a big plus for us. This hotel has a lot to work on. Even the small additions could make a whole lot of difference!!!! Please try harder then you would be a nicer place to stay!!!
