The hotel appears to be split between two buildings with check-in at the historic building in which we stayed, on the side street. This was apparently a priest's residence, very old, lots of hand-hewn beams and an enormous fireplace in the lounge of the kind once used to hang cooking pots (from the wood piles it looks as though it may still be in use in winter). The lounge makes a comfortable little public area, with an honor bar (simple drinks and snacks) and a friendly, rather sleepy, dog. The rooms in this section were huge, I had specified bathtubs so these were the suites. Staff were friendly and helpful with a dinner recommendation. Breakfast was good, obviously "ordered in" since we had to specify exactly what we wanted the night before; the front desk was not manned at all times and after 8 p.m. re-entry to the building was by a keypad and a code. There is no elevator though the stairs are not that steep and help with luggage was offered. Location is very central with the "vieux bassin" close by. We considered it a privilege to stay in these surroundings and our experience was very satisfactory to us, we enjoy hotels with a history and character, but while this one is five stars for us, the lack of a 24 hour front desk and no food preparation onsite makes it less than full service, hence my four star rating-but it is so much more fun to stay in a building with a history in the oldest part of Honfleur than in a chain hotel!
