Parador de Hondarribia

Hondarribia|0.18km from St. Mary Gate
We stayed here a week while on a tour. We had room 210. It was an average size room with 2 twin beds pushed together, a desk, full length mirror, a closet, safe, 2 chairs, a ceiling fan, a fridge that had drinks which cost extra and 2 chairs. The room was very clean. The bathroom had a tub with a shower. One needed to be careful in the shower as the tub was slippery. The towel racks were so installed so high that I had to stand on my toes to get the towels off of it. It would have helped if I was over 6 ft. tall (I am 5'5”). The beds were comfy & had small rugs on either side. We did have an issue with the AC not working the first day or 2 so our room was warm. That said the staff was good about working to fix it. The Parador has lots of ambience in the main areas. The outdoor terrace is fantastic & has wonderful views of the water. It was a great place to sit in the afternoon and enjoy a glass of wine. Front desk staff were great. Our room did not have an elevator that we could use. That was a disappointment as I had checked with the tour company before booking. We had to climb up 2 stories since the lobby floor is floor 0, not the 1st floor. Breakfast was included in our plan. It was good. However, about the 3rd day, they started to run out of items like yogurt which many of would have liked. Also at times they were slow at restocking the buffet. Some days it seemed like the restaurant was understaffed at breakfast with one person working instead of 2. All in all a good 4 star experience.

Hotel Jauregui

Sercotel Jauregui is a modern hotel in the centre of Hondarribia. There are signs to the hotel as you enter the town, so it is easy to find. There was also ample parking at the front of the hotel to allow us to unload our luggage and book in. As parking can be difficult in Hondarribia however, I booked the hotel’s private parking which is just around the corner in an underground car park. It was easy to find and the spaces are a good size. Our room on the first floor was modern and well-appointed and, as it is a corner room, it also felt very light and cool. As I’ve already said, the hotel is centrally located and is adjacent to Calle San Pedro, which is the Main Street in town for bars etc. The promenade is just a couple of minutes walk and the wonderful old town is an easy 10 minute stroll. Breakfast was top class and in addition to the normal Continental selection of fruit, cold meats, cheeses etc., you could have tortilla or (and even better) decent bacon and perfectly cooked scrambled eggs. Throughout our stay all members of staff were pleasant and helpful and we would certainly use this hotel again.

Hotel Rio Bidasoa
4.2/554 Reviews
We had planned to stay at the Parador, but it was fully booked, so we stayed here for 8 nights instead. Despite its four star rating, Hotel Rio Bidasoa was about half the price - so our expectations were not great. The hotel is well located with a convenient car park, and the reception area is welcoming (as were the staff). Buffet breakfast was generally good, and the bedroom was spacious, well equipped and air-conditioned. My primary criticism is that the building is bland and characterless. Internal decor (particularly in the bedrooms) lacks warmth and colour - it feels spartan and utilitarian despite being very clean and well appointed (TV, Nespresso machine, fridge, safe etc). Also - be warned that the laminate flooring seems to amplify and transmit sounds between rooms - you could literally hear a pin drop!. Despite the negatives, this is a good hotel and it offers great value.
