Hokkaido Hotel Guide

Hokkaido is located in the northernmost part of Japan and is Japan's second largest island with an area of 83,456.58 square kilometers, accounting for approximately 22% of Japan's total area.

Hokkaido's greatest attractions are the beauty of each season, the untouched nature, and delicious cuisine. The beauty of the four seasons attract visitors from both Japan and abroad.

People typically divide Hokkaido into four major areas: Daoyang, Daodong, Daobei, and Daonan. Daoyang is home to Sapporo, Otaru, Lake Toya, and Noboribetsu. Daobei includes Asahikawa, Furano, Miho, Sounkyo, and Wakkanai. Donan includes Hakodate and the surrounding area. Daodong includes Shiretoko, Abashiri, Kushiro and other areas, as well as Daodong’s three major lakes.

Hokkaido is colder than the rest of Japan. Take Sapporo as an example, in spring, the average temperature is about 10 degrees. Even in summer, you’ll need to take some long-sleeved clothing. In winter, the minimum temperature is minus 7 degrees Celsius. The temperature in the east of Hokkaido gets even colder.

Generally speaking, Daoyang, which is centered on Sapporo and Otaru, Daobei where Asahikawa and Sounkyo are located, and Daonan where Noboribetsu and Hakodate are found, are suitable for tourism throughout the year. The best time to visit Furano is summer. The Dodong area to the east of Hokkaido is popular for its winter landscapes.

Some visitors consider Sapporo a transit station to other cities in Hokkaido. Some visitors will spend two or three days in Sapporo to experience the tranquility of the area. The urban area is not large. If you are only visiting the city center, you can rely on public transportation and walking. The Tanuki Koji is a good place for ramen. Susukino has a colorful nightlife. In winter, Odori Park holds a Christmas market and lantern festival. From JR Sapporo Station, you can take a train to New Chitose Airport and other cities in Hokkaido. Odori Station is a transportation hub in Sapporo, and you can change between three subway lines. There are many business hotels and express hotels in the city center.
