Having stayed at several Kaiyuan hotels previously, and after visiting Tangqi Ancient Town, I didn't want to drive home late. So, when choosing between two 5-star options, Kaiyuan and Junlan, I decisively went with Kaiyuan.
As a Ctrip member, I was entitled to a complimentary room upgrade, late check-out until 2 PM, and could redeem fruit with just one point. I also specifically requested a high floor, a quiet room, and definitely no corner room.
We arrived at the hotel just before 8 PM, guided by phone navigation. After a full day of exploring, we were quite tired and just wanted to settle in early. The first thing the front desk attendant told us was that all 2-meter king-size rooms in the hotel are corner rooms. (My initial thought: why wasn't this communicated or addressed when the booking was made, instead of waiting until we arrived?) After a brief discussion, the manager was very courteous. She suggested we check out the king room first, and if we weren't happy, we could switch to a centrally located twin room. They even thoughtfully provided two other twin room options for us to consider.
Next, the attendant asked for our phone number. Her subsequent remark was equally baffling: for two guests, they *insisted* on having two phone numbers. (I declined on the spot, and the manager later clarified it was in case one number couldn't be reached.)
We were initially ready to just settle for the corner king room without looking further. However, upon entering, there was a walk-in closet right next to the entrance, with two white bathrobes hanging opposite a mirror. Honestly, the sight was quite startling. Plus, there was a massive pillar right beside the bed, totally unlike the main photo on Ctrip. So, we then checked out the other twin rooms. In one, the window was stuck; in another, there was a noticeable loud noise coming from inside. The accompanying attendant was incredibly patient and helpful. She went back to the front desk and managed to get us an upgrade to a high-floor executive twin room. By the time we finally settled, it was already past 8:30 PM. She was clearly as exhausted by the whole process as we were.
The room attendant was excellent, very responsive to our requests, bringing us fruit, extra sheets, and anything else we needed. The room itself was clean and tidy, and the floor-to-ceiling windows provided a great view. However, around midnight, there was still construction noise downstairs, and we were woken up again by it at just past 5 AM.
Breakfast offered a wide variety of choices, including local specialty snacks. The piano in the lobby also created a lovely atmosphere.
When we checked out around 10 AM and handed the key card to the front desk attendant, we were met with yet another baffling question: 'Is anyone else still in your room? Do you have anything left behind?' We were quite taken aback! While it *might* have been a clumsy way to remind us not to forget anything, we were so put off that we didn't even bother asking for an invoice; we just turned around and left immediately.
I hadn't originally intended to write such a detailed review, but that afternoon, the hotel called to inquire about our stay, mentioning they would arrange a room in advance for our next visit. To that, I'd like to say that after this experience, there won't *be* a next time. On a final note, I suggest the hotel replace its pillow inserts; even wrapped in fresh sheets, they still had an unpleasant smell.
