Pier House Accommodation

Great location, nice size and overall room/amenity quality. Only annoying or rather negative point to note would be the limited h of the reception desk. Several of us arrived in the evening and even though it was indicated that we will be contacted with check in details, we were faced with a locked entrance upon arrival and had to call the number stated there on the board. A person arrived like 30min later only to do the check in process. Same with check out since the housekeeper had to come from another hotel to open the door for us.

I had an incredible stay at Pier House during my recent trip to Funchal. I actually ended up staying here three times over the course of the trip, which says it all. Andre was an excellent host — genuinely kind, welcoming, and always helpful. He really made the experience feel personal and comfortable. The rooms were fantastic — spotless, beautifully maintained, and incredibly comfortable. I had some of the best nights’ sleep here, which is exactly what you want after long days exploring and hiking. The location is unbeatable. You’re right in the heart of Funchal, yet it’s not loud or overwhelming. Everything is on your doorstep — the pier, the old town, the cathedral, shops, restaurants — you simply couldn’t ask for better. I honestly cannot recommend Pier House highly enough. I’ll absolutely be staying here again when I return to Madeira for more hiking.

The accommodation was very secure and required you to scan your door key to enter the building. Lovely decor in the accommodation and very clean. Very central location, lots of restaurants, bars and shops in the immediate vicinity. Very convenient for tour pick ups at the end of the street where a lot of the main bus stops were also located. There was a lovely little bottle of wine, 2 bananas and 2 chocolates in our room on arrival. There was modern decor in the accommodation and it was clean. There was a small mini bar and Nespresso machine in the room. We asked for 2 extra pillows shortly after arrival and were told if they had them they would deliver to our room, they didn't arrive and when we asked again the following day they said they had none. That's a first. Our air conditioning did not work in our room, we called to reception twice and someone came to the room on the second occasion but didn't know what the issue was and said they would get back to us but never did. It seemed to be on a central system. We had to leave one window open in our room each night due to the heat which resulting in being woken up from noise from the street / bar below, on one occasion until 4.30 in the morning. The water was only ever very warm in the sink and shower, it was never hot, no matter what time of the day it was used.

Perfect location, so close to the sea front, right in the old town, everything is walkable and pretty! Accommodation is clean and the rooms are pretty.

Great value for money Perfect location, very clean room, comfortable bed and pillows! The only thing missing was some sort of a mosquito screen on the windows - every time I opened them to get some fresh air, tiny flies from the nearby trees invaded my room.

No sleep because of nightclub, poor communication Clean rooms, comfortable bed, convenient location within Funchal. But the positives are lost on the poor customer service and complete lack of sleep. I could not sleep at all for four nights. The hotel is directly above a bar/night club that played pounding music until 4am one night, 2am other nights, including Sunday and Monday nights. It was impossible to sleep. The bedroom vibrated from the music bass. The hotel does not own the club so they have no control, but it’s the same building and can be heard and felt clearly. You will not sleep if you stay here. Poor customer service. To begin, the booking confirmation stated there was no front desk and to contact the property to make check-in arrangements. I tried to contact multiple times, they did not reply to messages. I eventually managed to get a response on the phone on the day of our arrival when the only instructions given were “call us when you arrive at the property”. When we arrived that evening, the person who answered the phone was unhappy and rude, telling us that he had needed to leave the supermarket to check us in – not at all welcoming to hotel guests. There was a huge deposit to pay each to "protect the hotel against damage". This was far too excessive, particularly as we had already paid for our stay in advance. After we left, one of the deposits had a deduction with no explanation. The hotel claim this is due to exchange rate, yet the other was refunded in full so it cannot be.

Nobody does this anymore, most hotels just scan your card Tv most channels don’t work Reception is not open as per the hours shown and they close for lunch Texted asking if we could leave the bags, was told yes, and when we got there they were closed for lunch break. Never heard of a hotel closing for lunch! They could have mentioned that !!!! So last day was a bit of a waste of time because couldn’t trust them to leave the bags and reception being open.
