Holiday Inn Express Winchester South Stephens City

Frederick County
We used IHG points for a one night stay at this hotel. We have stayed at numerous Holiday Inn Express hotels, and this one was by far the worst. The lobby was messy and the floors looked dirty. We were told not to use the side door because it was not working well - which was true - it could not be locked because part of the jamb was broken off. We were given a first floor room. On opening the door, the room had an odor and the tile floor looked dirty - I wondered if the room had been cleaned. On closer inspection, the floor was chipped and stained but didn't have debris on it. The towels were fresh and the bathroom was in order, but the tub had mildew around the caulk and a large stain in the tub. There is very little lighting in these rooms - only one light by the door, lamps on the wall by the bed and one light on the desk. The next morning, my husband went to the lobby early for breakfast, which was overcooked eggs and sausage. He overheard the breakfast attendant tell another staff member that she was ”still throwing up”. I had breakfast elsewhere. When we left, there was no one at the desk to resolve credit card charges that should not have been made - the room was free on IHG points. Usually a small charge is made, then removed before checkout. We wondered if we were given a bad room because it was on points - not our experience on other stays. This hotel is in poor repair, not very clean and understaffed.

We stayed here during the 9 year state baseball tournament, we wanted a hotel a little farther away then all the kids were staying. Great location, safe parking and near restaurant’s and a Walmart. Restaurant was open so we ordered food to go to our room. Room pluses - mini fridge microwave large flat screen TV and an awesome AC. Cons - coffee pot needs updating and bathroom could use a little updating. Please move smoking area away from entrance. This hotel was great for our needs, would stay again

The stay occurred over the Memorial Day weekend. I can't say enough about the lady that fixes the breakfast. It is amazing to see her detail to cleanliness and presentation, plus, she makes breakfast that is out of this world. I hope they never lose her! Saturday's breakfast was real scrabbled eggs, bacon and potatoes. Sunday's was scrabbled eggs, sausage, homemade biscuits and sausage gravy! Amazing! Monday, Memorial Day, was scrabbled eggs, rosemary potatoes (which were delicious), and bacon. I would pay to eat the breakfast she puts out. The coffee was hot, the juice bar was always full, and the waffle irons were ready for anyone who wanted a waffle. Thank you for paying attention to all those details. The hotel was clean and quiet!

The property overall is nice and if you are planning on a short sleep and leave stay I would recommend, however there are some downsides. First there is no complimentary breakfast they ONLY have a restaurant on premises and do not list that anywhere or mention it at check in, very disappointing if your like me and want to do work in your room. There is not even any info about it in the rooms, none, nada, zip, zero.. Second the room I got had a very strong deodorizer smell when I opened the door and I mean very strong, like punch you the face strong. The last thing is just a pet peeve of mine and that is of all things the toilet seat lol it is one of those with the gap in the front like you get at a rest stop along the highway or in a institution, just drives me nuts. Overall it is a 3 out of five, 2 major circles lost and this platinum IHG will not stay again because of those.
