Hotel Cala del Pi - Adults Only

Platja d'Aro|1.08km from Aquadiver
Firstly, this is not a 5 star hotel. It is a very good hotel, with some great amenities but far from 5 star standard at the moment. We enjoyed our stay and had a great holiday, it is that the hotel just did not meet our expectations and for the money we paid for a 5 star experience. The hotel is spotless, the rooms are small but good with large beds but let down by the pillows. Plenty of sunbeds and we always manged to get one even being at the height of the season. Adults only also made it a relaxing experience. I think the main issues was the serving staff, although they are pleasant the serving staff are very young and inexperienced without adequate training, there also seems to be no supervision. Basics are missing, like hello, goodbye and smiling, this starts to get you down after a few days. This is not what you expect at a 5 star hotel. The reception, the cleaners and the concierge are very good and can't understand why it doesn't extend to the serving staff. Breakfast was fine, but not great. We tried the restaurant twice and while good standard is let down by waiters which made us eat elsewhere and actually found better. Snack bar is what lets it down most, poor choose, expensive if you want to eat there over a two week stay. I'm now dubious of all the positive comments and one of the reasons we choose this hotel. They seem too similar and I can't be the only one with these observations. I hope my comments on training are taken constructively.

I’ll start by saying that I’m writing this review whilst still holidaying. We came as a family- a mother, 2 daughters (in 30’s) and 19 month grandchild. We’re all inclusive and we are not picky at all. When reading other reviews of hotels we typically roll our eyes and say ‘you can’t please everyone’ or ‘it’s what you make of it’ so please trust me when I explain this hotel. I’ll start with the positives- the setting is beautiful- pool is overlooking the sea. The food is nice enough, there’s always something to eat, mainly pizza, pasta, chips and salad. (Salad bar is lush) Breakfast is our favourite meal. (There’s cereal, continental, pastries, pancakes, fruit, yoghurt, bacons and eggs etc.) We found the beds comfy for all you only get one pillow, it’s decent. Martin, a waiter, FANTASTIC with the little one. Such a lovely man. He always greets us with a ‘hello love’. Meal times aren’t too bad either- Breakfast 8-10am Lunch 1-2:30pm and Dinner 7-10pm Thinks that’s about it really. It’s centrally located, we attempted to go for an evening meal twice. Everywhere is closed on a Tuesday (and some on Monday too) then places don’t open until 8pm, so with a little one, it’s no good. The hotel. Buckle in! There is a park when you first arrive, which is a death trap. There are little tree stumps sticking up, no bark or sand down, the steps up to the slides have huge gaps in them and the swing is on a wonk- it’s completely unusable. The beach- it’s not sand, it’s shingle, so sharp underfoot. The staff- the most rudest people we have ever met. It’s very much catered towards the French. When ordering a drink in the evening, I was at the bar, the waitress completely ignored me and served a paying Frenchman, after him, she served her colleague doing table service, couldn’t help myself at this point and I said ‘HOLA?!’ She looked at me in utter disgust and continued to serve her colleague. In Spain, you expect (rightly or wrongly) that the majority of people will speak English, basic, enough to get by, but not a word is spoken. I was heavily relying on my Spanish GCSE to get by. (2 male receptionists speak English and that’s it) I naturally really try abroad to understand the basics of their language but have always found English is widely spoken. It describes the hotel as family friendly- it’s not. There is a tiny pool which is full of leaves from the trees above- not well kept at all. The tiles on the floor are not the correct ones- it’s VERY slippy when wet. The pool is FREEZING. They have built in pool steps but no hand rail. No lifeguard either. We had a pushchair- getting down the ramp, it’s practically vertical with some grips missing. If you’re a wheelchair user, you wouldn’t be able to go down alone. Everything is on -1 floor, so a lot of steps involved. The lifts- there are 3 of them- lethal! They close when you’re getting in them, not allowing time at all, and the sensor must be knackered because they don’t open again. We found that

Hotel Castell d'Emporda

One of the best mountain getaways! The Castle is very well maintained keeping its authenticity with a modern touch. We booked the Pere Margarit suite and our stay couldn’t be comfier or more relaxing. The buffet breakfast is amazing with lots of options of high quality ingredients. Dinner in Drac Restaurant is also great. The staff is incredibly helpful and attentive. Special thanks to Lika from the reception and Arnau in F&B. We will definitely come back soon!
