A fantastic old historical hotel. Very good beds, very good food, a nice big garden close to the big inland lake Bandak, surrounded by high mountains. The hotel staff was very nice and service-minded. A perfect stay combined with a travel with the more than 120 years old canal boats on the Telemark Canal, passing a lot of locks on the way from the coast city Skien.

Very pleased with the dinner, breakfast, sauna package and the hotel grounds. What could be better: The story telling was a tad long. Try to make it in 20 minutes, and do include some ghost stories! The ghost was not mentioned. Also, there should be a place you could dry very wet hiking clothes. The bathrom we had could not get any warmer.

Dalen Hotel is located in a beautiful valley in a idyllic town. Staff was polite and friendly upon arrival and made sure we had everything we needed. For our first meal we had afternoon tea. This was a bit disappointing as the table was not cleaned between setings and sticky raspberry jam from the last serving spoiled our cutlery. The service was very slow. The room was nice and cosy with charm. This added to the historical atmosphere of the hotel. For dinner the restaurant had trouble serving two different wines at the same table so we had to drink the same wine by the glass. This was very disappointing as we love wine and wanted to try different pairings. Otherwise the food was good. A nice stay but far from our expectations especially in regards of the service.

Our stay at the Dalen Hotel was magical. The building felt like we had stepped back in time with all the comforts of modern times. We had the four course dinner that was made special by the sommelier Joao. We learned so much about European wines. Added to that was the special attention we received from The bar manager Lorenzo. He introduced us to a Norwegian . And now a bottle lives in my liquor cabinet. Everytime I have a gin and tonic I will remember my stay at thishotel.

We booked the Tower room weeks in advance only to enter the room and find it was already occupied! We were then offered a much smaller room as an “upgrade” before finally being offered an upgraded room. This should never happen at any hotel and it squandered what little time we had for our stay. A meaty malle (cod) main course at dinner was a bit disappointing. Halibut or sea bass would have been better with the delicately balanced meal.

Hotel Dalen is truly an architectural gem in the midst of stunning Norwegian scenery - but there is more! The hotel has an ambience of nostalgia, which transports you instantly back in time - it is as if you are actually back in 1894! The service is effortless, friendly and of a standard not found anywhere else in Norway - other norwegian establishments has a lot to learn from Dalen! We enjoyed both a gourmet dinner, and an impressive afternoon tea on the beautiful terrace - overlooking the fjord, whith the resident family of geese strolling by.. It was simply blissfull! We had a wonderful stay in this classic hotel with great hospitality. Unique location and great views. Superb restaurant. Minor points are the relatively small rooms. And we recommend not to book room 1 (which we had) as this room is located next to the kitchen with lots of noise out of the kitchen in the evening and night.
