Laguna Lodge

Laguna Lodge

📍 Tortuguero, Limon. Frente a Laguna principal de Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★ 8.3 (62 reviews)

"Great hotel, need to get there by boat. Lovely grounds and very close to the ocean. Good breakfast. Rooms a little basic but clean. Only noise was the birds in the morning. Plenty of sun loungers and towels at the pool. Friendly staff."

Tortuga Lodge

Tortuga Lodge

📍 Across from the airstrip, 1 mile north of the Town of Tortuguero Limon Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★★ 9.2 (77 reviews)

"Had 3 nights in this fabulous location. Private transfer from SJO, arranged by lodge, gave us a fantastic view of the countryside with amazing information from their extremely knowledgeable & friendly driver Juan Carlos. Took about 4 hours to Cano Blanco with a great stop for breakfast on the way. The boat trip to the Lodge was a fabulous wildlife spotting opportunity, with once more a super informative guide & observant driver! Stayed in Mr Mishak downstairs room, which was fantastic - very spacious & bright with huge bathroom & very welcome air conditioning. The boat trips were all amazing with lots of birdlife found by the super guides, all of whom had excellent English & incredible knowledge of the local flora & fauna. There were some heavy rain showers but great ponchos provided on boat reduced the impact & the showers mostly stopped after 15-20 minutes. We particularly enjoyed the Laguna tour, which visits a local small farm but each trip on the river revealed different birds & wildlife. The meals were super, especially the fruits & juices & all the staff were extremely friendly & helpful. They really go overboard to ensure every guest gets the most from their holiday. We flew back to SJO from the airstrip just across the river & would recommend flying in one direction to get a Birds Eye view of the area."

Pachira Lodge

Pachira Lodge

📍 Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★ 8.0 (72 reviews)

"Had a brilliant time at Pachira lodge, location is amazing in the middle of the jungle on the river. Our guide was called Ray and his guided tour down the river was amazing, he pointed out so many amazing animals and was really knowledgeable."

Evergreen Lodge

Evergreen Lodge

📍 Parque Nacional Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★ 8.2 (50 reviews)

"You really get the wow factor here. After a 2 hour boat ride to get here. You really are in the rain forest. Before we even checked in we were told by the lady on reception that a sloth was near by. So off we went and sure enough mother and baby were moving through the trees, then another member of staff asked if we would like to see a snake. Boa constrictor enter stage left. Monkeys everywhere. Toucans, frogs, amazing. The room was basic but perfectly adequate. The tin roof makes for an interesting sleep if it rains which it did. Meals by way of a buffet style restaurant and we found nothing to complain about. Loved our short stay here. Wonderful experience."

Valverde Glamping & Ecolodge

Valverde Glamping & Ecolodge

📍 Tortuguero National Park, Pococí, Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★ 9.0 (21 reviews)

"Beautiful glamping by the water in Tortuguero. To get there, you need to travel by boat for about an hour—this journey itself is already very special and beautiful. The tents and cabins are set in a stunning natural environment. In the garden alone we already saw various animals such as toucans, monkeys, and iguanas. From the dining area you have a beautiful view over the water. Breakfast was included and very tasty. For tours, you were picked up directly at the glamping site, and there was a free shuttle to the village. The morning canoe tour is highly recommended. Truly a stunning and unique place with super friendly staff."

Caribbean Paradise Eco-Lodge

Caribbean Paradise Eco-Lodge

📍 Laguna Penitencia, Colorado
★★★ 7.7 (11 reviews)

"We stayed at this location for two nights and had a great time; lots of beautiful colorful birds and wonderful silence, except for the sounds of the jungle and the howler monkeys in the distance, though occasionally taxi boats speeding past! The lodge has no windows but mosquito nets, so you are truly close to nature! Milene, the owner, picked us up in San José and guided us to Tortuguero, where we were welcomed upon arrival by Bismarck. We had a lovely stay! We did two excursions: one boat trip and a tour of the town of Tortuguero, both with the guide. The beds were very good, the shower fine, and the food simple but tasty! And truly Costa Rican."

Aninga Lodge

Aninga Lodge

📍 Frente a la Laguna Principal Del Tortuguero, Diagonal, Tortuguero, Colorado
★★★ 9.2 (54 reviews)

"Best hotel for the perfect stay amongst the wildlife. Trip on the boat to the lodge was a great experience and the guide pointed out lots to see. Our lodge was clean and had all the facilities required. The weather was very unpredictable in January so raincoat needed as it can change in seconds. Saw lots of monkeys on nature trail."

Casa Marbella

Casa Marbella

📍 In front of the Catholic Church, Colorado
★★ 8.9 (65 reviews)

"The place was well maintained. The rooms had air conditioning and the beds were ok. Very little furniture in the room. The place was well laid out and had fans on the patio’s which made it more comfortable. Breakfast was basic but well done. Fresh fruit, eggs or pancakes and coffee tea and chocolate. The best was the guide Luis who made all our tours a great experience, he is knowledgeable and enthusiastic and very friendly."

Foresta Lodge

Foresta Lodge

📍 500 Mts West Tortuguero National Park, Laguna Penitencia, Colorado
★★ 7.8 (22 reviews)

"This was very beautiful location with amazing gardens. The staff was a pleasure to deal with an very informative about the surrounding area. They have z a beautiful walkway through Jungle. The staff helped organize a spa day for our group and even helped get us there by water taxi. The owners had fresh drinks waiting us and our arrival with smiling faces. Very welcoming and accommodating. This is a must for any nature lovers or naturalist. Everything you could want to see in an eco tourist environment in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 can be found on these grounds. Frogs, birds, butterflies, monkeys, and many many more. This is a Top Notch place and should be a 5 Star rated place. They also have a beautiful pool in this remote jungle location. Can not wait to go back and visit this Gem again."

Laguna Lodge ★★★
"Outstanding place. Good food, comfortable rooms within a genuinely delightful setting. A beach to walk to, a laguna to enjoy boat trips through. Most of all Sebastian, quite simply the best tour guide I've come across. Very enjoyable, even with rain and thunder!"

Tortuga Lodge ★★★★
"Tortuga lodge is one of Boena’s luxury lodge locations. It’s best accessible via a short internal flight from San Jose, but can also be reached by road and then river. The landing strip is literally 2 minutes away and is a thrilling landing between sea and river. Rooms are elegant, bright and comfy. The staff go above and beyond (Gabriella and Maria, thank you) to make the most of your stay and the restaurant offers beautiful fresh produce and fantastic seafood- we’d recommend the Bass Ceviche. Tours and their guides are fantastic (Bernardo, Manuel and Yewitson, thank you). In particular, they know where to find the wildlife and do their best to ensure you get the best view and pictures, whilst being respectful of the creatures’ environment and territory. With every wildlife tour we were welcomed back with a refreshing freshly made fruit smoothly served by a smiling member of the team. All excursions were in small groups unlike other surrounding lodges that seemed to have a boat full of guests. Binoculars and ponchos (it’s a rain forest!) were provided as we’re wellies for the night walk. Fabulous location for making the most of seeing river wildlife."

"Great riverside location with comfortable rooms, nice gardens and swimming pool located just across the water from the town and the beach of the Caribbean Sea. Super variety of wildlife including Iguanas, Basilisks and Monkeys to name a few. Knowledgeable guides made the world of difference! The weather was kind for the end of May with just one very wet night!"

Evergreen Lodge ★★★
"We visited as part of a small group wildlife tour. First of all, we were surprised that the access road via the banana plantations was unpaved considering that this is a key tourist destination. Arriving at the boat pier lots of people were milling around waiting their turn and making use of the chargeable toilet facilities. The boat transfer took safety seriously with life jackets being provided and insisted upon. The driver (John) was very keen eyed and pointed out lots of wildlife on the way although by the end of the journey the loud engine noise was very wearing. We were allocated room 76 which was comfortable enough if a little basic. As the furthest from reception it was a long walk with luggage. It was very close to the Monkey restaurant which had spotlights on all night that made sleeping difficult and where staff arrived chattering and clattering about 5am to set up for breakfast. With unglazed windows external sounds carry and we enjoyed hearing the frogs and howler monkeys but not the human noise. The tree next to the room was home to white faced monkeys who were very entertaining even when fighting and chasing over the roof. Meals were served buffets of mass catering standards and adequate quantities with the exception of dessert which were small portions with no choice. The queue for the egg station was long at breakfast. There’s plenty to see and do around the hotel; we visited the town and beach of Tortuguero by boat and took a wildlife trip into the mangroves with guide John. On foot we took some of the trails and saw around 6 sloths. Two or three nights is an ideal stay."

"Tortuguero is all about the wildlife tours and this is one of the best places to stay, as their guides are fantastic. We did three trips with Jiro who was incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining as a guide. He's also the guide on the celebrity Race Across the World! The riverboat ride, night walk and Tortuguero hill were all full of animals and beautiful views. We also did the canoe trip with Antonio, who was even more experienced and knew all about the birds and plants. This was a great experience, as you could go into the smaller waterways, which was incredible. The lodge itself is lovely. Great gardens with toucans and hummingbirds. The food is really good and the staff are all very helpful and welcoming. The rooms are clean and comfortable, if a little rustic but it fits the area and all accommodation is similar in nature. I would stay again."

"Cute lodge. It’s more like glamping than a hotel. The breakfast was included but not the dinner. Rates were reasonable. $20 per person for the buffet. The food was above average. We booked the turtle nesting tour the first night . It ended up being a bust which was fine. What I didn’t like was that we had to stand in the same place for 2 hours waiting for scouts to let us know if we would be able to see it. Ended up being some family bonding time. Also the tour said 10 people max but there were more like 60 people. The following morning, We went to the next hotel pachiga I think and there was a nice short hiking trail there. We saw howler monkeys there."

"We stayed here three nights and we’re very happy with our choice. The casa has its own dock so super easy for boat pick ups and drop offs. The tours we took from their guide were worth every penny - thanks Luis for your wonderful service! Breakfast was tasty and we appreciated the use of the guest fridge , as well as all the chairs on the deck to watch the world go by. It is very hot in Tortuguero so our room with an a/c was much appreciated!"

"The room was basic as noted in other reviews, and it does get hot and stuffy at night. That said, we really enjoyed our stay. My son LOVED the natural pool with slide and we saw a sloth, spider monkey and capuchin monkeys from the pool area. At night you could hear the sounds of the forest. Tour guide Antonio gave us an amazing canoe tour in the morning and night walk one night and tour guide Alexis took us out to look for turtles (which we saw in mid/late June). We also enjoyed hiking on our own on the national park trail. Owner was a fantastic help organizing everything. I also want to note that in Tortuguero the town my son was bitten by a dog and the owner helped us arrange getting out and to a place with rabies shots available within 24 hours of the bite, which took a lot of phone calls and extra effort. We stayed 3 nights, and I’d recommend at least two nights to enjoy the place. We loved it. Oh, and we had read reviews suggesting there wasn’t enough food provided here but we found quite the opposite. Food portions were huge and some meals we asked for two plates for three of us to avoid throwing some of it out. Basic Costa Rican fare but it was hearty and what we expected. Staff were friendly and helpful. "
