Climbing Mt Pinatubo was effectively two adventures for the price of one – firstly the 4x4 ride and secondly the hike itself. The ride is great fun – proper off-roading, prepare to be bounced around as you traverse the river bed and boulders on the way to the start of the hike. Curiously, my wife normally suffers from motion sickness on winding roads or most boat rides, but didn’t struggle with this. The hike is on a well-defined track, taking you up to the crater lake. It was an early start, so we missed the worst of the heat and you can buy drinks and snacks at the top if you want to travel light. There are also (basic) toilets near the lake, but we didn’t use them. Because we wanted to do it in a day, we rented a hire car, so as to avoid the uncertainty/hassle of public transport. We stayed at Alvin and Angie’s Guesthouse the night before, started early ~6am and the ride + hike were pretty quick, we ended up with an afternoon spare. so were able to cram in some Manilla sightseeing as a bonus. If you use Google maps, it’s definitely worth using the toll roads, they save hours. I'd advise bringing extra food as breakfast was small for hiking!
