Red Cedars Motel

We knew this was one of the cheaper motels in Canberra - so didn’t expect the Ritz, but there were a few things that were just frustrating and make for a 3 star review. Between 2 couples we had 2 rooms, a twin Room that had 2 Double beds, and a family room that had a Queen Bed and bunks. For a four night stay the family room was definitely the preferable of the two as it was larger, lighter, and better equipped. The positives: Price, and the rooms were generally clean, the beds were comfortable. The outside area is simple but clean and tidy, no graffiti or anything. Good showers with lots of hot water. Surprisingly quiet given distance from main highway, and walking distance to a train stop. The negatives: The twin room was far too small to comfortably accomodate more than one couple. Although it came with a microwave / jug / toaster & cutlery & crockery it didn’t have anything required for actually using the microwave. No big bowl / microwave dish or anything, also no detergent or dishcloth - and although we asked these never appeared. So washing dishes is basically rinsing them in the bathroom hand-basin. Lighting was also appalling in the downstairs twin room, too dim at night to read anything as no overhead lighting. The shower also was missing a curtain so it was impossible to shower without drowning the whole bathroom. The family room was much better appointed and had a genuine kitchenette with everything required for both microwave and cook-top and its own sink + detergent. However the room STUNK of stale cigarette smoke so clearly the “No smoking sign” is often ignored. The doona cover was completely revolting in how badly it smelt of cigarettes - we did get this changed on request but it makes me wonder how often the covers are routinely changed. there is a free laundry with washer and dryer, but washer has some issues and it took 4+hrs to finish a cycle and let us get our washing out. Would be fine for a 1-2 night stay - but I wouldn’t do a 4 night stay here again.

Good hotel. The room was a reasonable size considering that this is a budget hotel, the ensuite toilet and shower are small but adequate. It is a bit out of town but fine if you have a car (probably public transport is available nearby, I did not check). They don't have a restaurant but you can buy a frozen meal from reception and heat it in a microwave if you like (continental breakfast can also be bought, I didn't try it).

Stayed there for 3 nights this week as I was running a training course in the Dining Hall. The staff were exceptional, couldn't do enough, available whenever for any query. The Dining Hall was heated, large enough to keep socially distant for a group of 16. Took me a day to find the light switches but I could have asked. Sanitiser was provided, large screen TV including cables. Only 1 toilet for group, but it wasn't an issue. Villa room accommodation was fine, no idea of cost as company paid, 2 bedrooms with full kitchen next door to dining hall. Clean, appealing, every thing I needed was there. Comfy lounges, large dining table enough to work and eat, seated 6. Vehranda with table and large seat. Parking out front. Leaking tap which I remembered to mention at the end and was told I should have said and they would have fixed it. Nothing was too much trouble. A lick of paint would be perfect and I noted this happening progressively with empty villas.

I booked a twin private ensuite for my last night in Canberra. YHA is the only accommodation with the ideal location and within my budget. I was lucky to get upgraded to a family ensuite by the Manager Martha (thank you), which is 3 beds too many for me, but with so much space to move around, I absolutely have no complaint. 😂 The room, furniture and bed linens may not be the newest or stylish, but they are clean. You will have to bring your own surface spray as they don't provide any in the room. They do provide towels, soaps, tea and coffee, a clean kettle, two mugs, coathangers, a box of tissues, and a LCD TV. You can use the full kitchen facilities in the communal kitchen area and get your filtered water from the water fountains in the communal areas. There are cheap lockers for hire in the hotel. The bus stops are right outside the door around the corner, the shopping precinct is only a couple of blocks away. There's a nice park towards the end of the main street. It is in the City so not that quiet at night, but you can open your windows for some fresh air! Reception is not on duty 24/7 but they are friendly and helpful (thank you Sydney). The communal kitchen area is very clean and tidy. Fellow visitors are mostly friendly and helpful. Definitely a great choice if you are not looking to stay in a holiday resort, just somewhere nice and comfortable, this is the place.

I've stayed in some dodgy places but none compared to this motel. Booked 3 rooms for a work trip to Canberra thinking we were going to arrive at the Taj Mahal, weren't we sadly mistaken. We arrived in one room to find the ”cleaner” had forgotten to pop the toilet seat back on the toilet (which wasn't clean by the way) no biggie, but the rooms were FILTHY! My college actually cleaned all the grime and black stuff off the coffee table with a cloth. The lounge was full of crumbs, ash and cigarette filters. Also stained with some questionable white stuff. The room had a dampness to it. That was only 1 room! The others were full of mould in the showers, around the provided body washes in the shower and the thickest soap scum left on the soap holder and a bathroom light that flickered like you were at some dodge rave party. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR KETTLES! My work mates kettle was full of black mould and grime..it wasn't stained that colour as she could wipe it easily with her finger. The carpets were atrocious in all rooms, damp and smelly, stained with white patches and also the rooms had a thick odour to it. I am not one to worry about where i sleep, as long as i have a clean bed, but even that was questionable. We stayed one night and couldn't deal with it any longer (getting locked in the bathroom and being locked OUT of the bathroom was the final straw) we booked somewhere else where we enjoyed the rest of our trip. Points to the Manager who was lovely, and clearly embarrassed as she had apparently just started working there. But seriously, the level of cleanliness was a joke. Half a star!!!!!
