Novotel Berlin Mitte

Berlin|2.55km from U Naturkundemuseum
In summary: Superb breakfast, good rooms, pretty good location (but there are better in Berlin), a few details could be improved. Good value for money. Accor has a huge range of hotels in Berlin, this is for them a midrange offering. The rooms are of reasonable size, I had a huge bathroom, minibar and room safe. Very clean. Bed surprisingly comfortable. Free wifi good enough for video streaming (there's also 'premium wifi' you can pay for). TV and heating controls fussy. Shower gel holder in the bathroom remained empty throughout my four day stay though there was liquid soap by the sink. Reading lights in room below average. Reception friendly, a little chaotic. The hotel restaurant is open in the evenings, snacks and drinks available after hours. Locked luggage storage next to reception. Breakfast is really nice - great coffee and fruit juice, all the rest as you would expect including some cold fish dishes. One level below an 'omelette bar' status but still pretty good for this price level of hotel. Location in Berlin Mitte is pretty good - they're two U-Bahn stations and several bus stops within a few minutes' walk, even though some of the bus schedules are a bit disappointing. Nikolaiviertel is 5 minutes walk away and if you increase your walking time to 15 minutes you can get to Alexanderplatz and Museuminsel easily enough. There are better location hotels in Mitte but it's quite OK really. Good value for money; rates vary quite a bit by day of the week (so if your travel days are flexible play around with your stay dates). I generally stay either more downmarket or more upmarket than this but it's interesting to see how a midrange hotel works - quite OK, though as often in this category of hotel proactive detail management doesn't get priority. I would recommend.

This is a modern functional hotel (which we booked via BA holidays) apparently popular for conferences, so you get the picture. Four of us went for a city break. The hotel is well situated within easy walking distance of Gendarmenmarkt. Spittelmart U-bahn is 2 minutes away. Easy and welcoming check-in. Our rooms were comfortable and spacious. The bathroom had an excellent walk-in shower although the wash basin had the depth of a birdbath. What was surprising was the amount of wasted space in the bedroom with a great void between the bed and the door which could have been used for some proper drawers and shelves. As it was, there was only 1 drawer and 3 shelves, one of which was useful only if you were 2 metres tall (see photo). The wardrobe, if you could call it that, was an open hanging space, but it was situated at right angles to a padded seat (see photo) making accessibility difficult and there was only one chair in the room. Tea-making facilities were available but instant coffee only and powdered milk. We used to take a small jug of milk from breakfast and keep it in the fridge. There was a very good and comprehensive breakfast with just about everything one could want. As a morning tea drinker I cannot comment on the coffee which came from a machine, but there was an excellent selection of leaf teas. The hot food was OK, but nothing cooked to order so that eggs were either warm scrambled or hard boiled. Staff were very helpful and dishes promptly refilled. We didn’t use the restaurant for dinner as the menu looked pretty basic but there are restaurants within walking distance. All in all, nothing special but I would still recommend it for a short stay.

The bright lights were the two very friendly guys, one slim German (?) at the reception, another bearded German (?) in the bar/restaurant area. The rest (mostly Spanish teenagers it seems) were obnoxious, pulling the plates from under your nose while you are still eating, walking around with a sour face like they own the place (and you should get out of their way). The arrogance we encountered upon our arrival and throughout our stay from the young ladies at the reception was revolting; putting this kind of people at the desk is a fail. Especially because I had to get at least ten times to the reception to activate the cards of our three rooms. They said it was because of proximity to our cell phones, but at least three times our phones were in the (locked) room …. Also one safe was blocked (battery dead, happens, but again making us face those ladies’ utter arrogance). We had three rooms. The cleaning people entered each room while we were still in bed (around 9am each time), in spite of the marker … they tried on other mornings but the door was closed, still quite unnerving to hear someone attempting to get in. Also some older women came to check out the service, just walking in asking if everything is ok… fawlty towers if you are old enough. Our rooms didn’t get cleaned every day, which you simply expect in a 4*, forcing us at some point to go and face the ladies at the reception to beg for towels, because they don’t pick up the phone. We got a commercial geste but rather had had a smooth stay without having to get things fixed or face unfriendliness all the time. I stayed in Melia hotels and this does not live up the chain’s standard. As you will see from my other reviews, I am a positive and constructive traveler. Positive points: location close to the metro; the gin and tonic; the breakfast buffet was very fine, managed by the friendly bearded guy; the slim guy at the reception desk helping us out. They lifted the place up (where the others seriously pulled it down, unfortunately).

We were in the hotel for 5 days. All staff are very friendly and competent. The room had everything you need, it was clean and the beds were comfortable. The location is great, much is to reach foot (such as the Friedrichstadt Palace), various rails are also in the immediate vicinity. Breakfast offer was completely sufficient. A problem in the whole center is to stop the car. It is only the parking house nearby (for € 20 per day). We then placed it in a residential area at the Sports Forum .... without charge. This worked well and since we always use the WelcomeCard, it was not a problem - because you can use all the rails. Only one did not like us at the hotel, and that was the lack of intimate space in the room. The window front was full of glass, deep in the ground. There was a dark store, but then really brought total darkness. A simple store missed. Since the room (our was the 103, i.e. just the 1.Etage) was directly on the multi-spurged main street, the light crossing below and the natural museum is constantly ”operating” against ....wo, everyone could see directly into the room, immediately into the room and on the bed. So was also to sleep completely dark, that wasn't so beautiful. The high level of noise through railways, cars and people is now so in such a city. Even because the charity' is just next to it, it cannot be avoided ....the window we had to close then night. However, the hotel is much further recommended.

Location wise, its In the middle of everything - train stations, bus stations, shopping, steaks, food, groceries and drug stores. Rooms are a bit tight especially if you have large luggage’s but big enough. Clean, spacious bathrooms, and all the necessary amenities available. But what makes this place great is their concierge services. They go out of their way to meet your needs but at the same time showing that they sincerely want to make your stay pleasant and easy. My hats off to Alaartin who made things so much easier for us. I will not only definitely be back but promote this hotel to friends and family.

Visited the hotel with a group of 26 lads, whilst we weren't the easiest to deal with the hotel staff put up with us and helped us out where they could! Special mention to the lady on the bar, she didn't speak great English but she was brilliant, her colleague on the bar wasn't the happiest of chaps but I think we won him around a little bit! Another mention goes to Francesco at reception! What a man! He couldn't help us anymore and I hope his Fantasy Football Team does well! Rooms were clean, showers great, no complaints! Good location too! Would definitely stay again! Top stuff, thank you!

The interior is quite nice and definitely 4 star worth. I booked a non-refundable single room for two nights, which was nice and clean. Everything needed was there. I do have to admit two flaws: 1. The friendly lady at the front desk got the wrong information from the system so I has to pay a second time on site (prepaid at trip.com). Thankfully the night manager figured it out and refunded me the money before it have been booked. 2. I have chosen the Hotel ONLY because of the large pool to swim in the morning. Unfortunately the friendly lady (first contact) told me the pool is closed on the day of arrival, but I could use the spa instead for free today. It should open on next day, so I could do my morning swim. The next morning in the spa they told me, pool won't open today still due to maintenance reason. Both topics took me nearly one hour which is a no go for wasting customers time...
