Novotel Berlin Mitte

Berlin|2.71km from Ballhaus Berlin
In summary: Superb breakfast, good rooms, pretty good location (but there are better in Berlin), a few details could be improved. Good value for money. Accor has a huge range of hotels in Berlin, this is for them a midrange offering. The rooms are of reasonable size, I had a huge bathroom, minibar and room safe. Very clean. Bed surprisingly comfortable. Free wifi good enough for video streaming (there's also 'premium wifi' you can pay for). TV and heating controls fussy. Shower gel holder in the bathroom remained empty throughout my four day stay though there was liquid soap by the sink. Reading lights in room below average. Reception friendly, a little chaotic. The hotel restaurant is open in the evenings, snacks and drinks available after hours. Locked luggage storage next to reception. Breakfast is really nice - great coffee and fruit juice, all the rest as you would expect including some cold fish dishes. One level below an 'omelette bar' status but still pretty good for this price level of hotel. Location in Berlin Mitte is pretty good - they're two U-Bahn stations and several bus stops within a few minutes' walk, even though some of the bus schedules are a bit disappointing. Nikolaiviertel is 5 minutes walk away and if you increase your walking time to 15 minutes you can get to Alexanderplatz and Museuminsel easily enough. There are better location hotels in Mitte but it's quite OK really. Good value for money; rates vary quite a bit by day of the week (so if your travel days are flexible play around with your stay dates). I generally stay either more downmarket or more upmarket than this but it's interesting to see how a midrange hotel works - quite OK, though as often in this category of hotel proactive detail management doesn't get priority. I would recommend.

Courtyard by Marriott Berlin City Center

This is a modern functional hotel (which we booked via BA holidays) apparently popular for conferences, so you get the picture. Four of us went for a city break. The hotel is well situated within easy walking distance of Gendarmenmarkt. Spittelmart U-bahn is 2 minutes away. Easy and welcoming check-in. Our rooms were comfortable and spacious. The bathroom had an excellent walk-in shower although the wash basin had the depth of a birdbath. What was surprising was the amount of wasted space in the bedroom with a great void between the bed and the door which could have been used for some proper drawers and shelves. As it was, there was only 1 drawer and 3 shelves, one of which was useful only if you were 2 metres tall (see photo). The wardrobe, if you could call it that, was an open hanging space, but it was situated at right angles to a padded seat (see photo) making accessibility difficult and there was only one chair in the room. Tea-making facilities were available but instant coffee only and powdered milk. We used to take a small jug of milk from breakfast and keep it in the fridge. There was a very good and comprehensive breakfast with just about everything one could want. As a morning tea drinker I cannot comment on the coffee which came from a machine, but there was an excellent selection of leaf teas. The hot food was OK, but nothing cooked to order so that eggs were either warm scrambled or hard boiled. Staff were very helpful and dishes promptly refilled. We didn’t use the restaurant for dinner as the menu looked pretty basic but there are restaurants within walking distance. All in all, nothing special but I would still recommend it for a short stay.

The bright lights were the two very friendly guys, one slim German (?) at the reception, another bearded German (?) in the bar/restaurant area. The rest (mostly Spanish teenagers it seems) were obnoxious, pulling the plates from under your nose while you are still eating, walking around with a sour face like they own the place (and you should get out of their way). The arrogance we encountered upon our arrival and throughout our stay from the young ladies at the reception was revolting; putting this kind of people at the desk is a fail. Especially because I had to get at least ten times to the reception to activate the cards of our three rooms. They said it was because of proximity to our cell phones, but at least three times our phones were in the (locked) room …. Also one safe was blocked (battery dead, happens, but again making us face those ladies’ utter arrogance). We had three rooms. The cleaning people entered each room while we were still in bed (around 9am each time), in spite of the marker … they tried on other mornings but the door was closed, still quite unnerving to hear someone attempting to get in. Also some older women came to check out the service, just walking in asking if everything is ok… fawlty towers if you are old enough. Our rooms didn’t get cleaned every day, which you simply expect in a 4*, forcing us at some point to go and face the ladies at the reception to beg for towels, because they don’t pick up the phone. We got a commercial geste but rather had had a smooth stay without having to get things fixed or face unfriendliness all the time. I stayed in Melia hotels and this does not live up the chain’s standard. As you will see from my other reviews, I am a positive and constructive traveler. Positive points: location close to the metro; the gin and tonic; the breakfast buffet was very fine, managed by the friendly bearded guy; the slim guy at the reception desk helping us out. They lifted the place up (where the others seriously pulled it down, unfortunately).

Urban Loft Berlin

New and modern hotel, spacious rooms, very reasonable rates, art everywhere (including an amusing orange gnome on room ceiling), cool lobby, friendly communal spaces, fresh food cafe in lobby (with vegan options), useful amenities (eg. free filtered water all day and free deluxe coffee machine access a good part of day) in lobby and and eco-friendly in expected and unexpected ways (e.g.hallway lighting is motion sensored, rooms have Berlin themed fabric tote bag for loan during your stay with option to buy if you want to keep it). Hotel is located in an area that’s still being developed but it is easy walking distance to a major train station, Brandenburg Gate (and other monuments/sites) and Tiergarten Park. Great hotel experience.

Leonardo Hotel Berlin Mitte

We reserved the smallest room (comfort) and immediately realized that we would need to upgrade to the superior room. I am traveling with my aunt and we need 2 beds. The comfort room was so small that the 2 beds were together with little space to move on the sides. It was not suitable for us. The pictures do show all the twin beds together, but naturally we assumed that they could be separated. When we asked about changing rooms, the delightful woman at the front desk (Victoria) graciously offered to show us the options available for the bigger rooms. We viewed the executive and superior rooms and were happy to pay the 15 Euro more for the superior room. Well worth the extra money given the difference in size. Now that we were settled with our room, we were off to explore Berlin. The location of this hotel is ideal. I learned that Mitte means center and surely this hotel is centrally located. Easy to find and easy to get to/ from. A special thank you to Victoria and her colleague at the front desk. We were very pleased with our experience at the Leonardo Berlin Mitte and would recommend to others.

The interior is quite nice and definitely 4 star worth. I booked a non-refundable single room for two nights, which was nice and clean. Everything needed was there. I do have to admit two flaws: 1. The friendly lady at the front desk got the wrong information from the system so I has to pay a second time on site (prepaid at trip.com). Thankfully the night manager figured it out and refunded me the money before it have been booked. 2. I have chosen the Hotel ONLY because of the large pool to swim in the morning. Unfortunately the friendly lady (first contact) told me the pool is closed on the day of arrival, but I could use the spa instead for free today. It should open on next day, so I could do my morning swim. The next morning in the spa they told me, pool won't open today still due to maintenance reason. Both topics took me nearly one hour which is a no go for wasting customers time...

Visited the hotel with a group of 26 lads, whilst we weren't the easiest to deal with the hotel staff put up with us and helped us out where they could! Special mention to the lady on the bar, she didn't speak great English but she was brilliant, her colleague on the bar wasn't the happiest of chaps but I think we won him around a little bit! Another mention goes to Francesco at reception! What a man! He couldn't help us anymore and I hope his Fantasy Football Team does well! Rooms were clean, showers great, no complaints! Good location too! Would definitely stay again! Top stuff, thank you!
